erico2k2: So basically what I want from my builder is a sealed structure then he can saunter of. You know roofing, windows and doors. The rest will be ALL up on me. Roofing, plumbing, tiling, woodwork, building from wood, building from wood, been there done that have the t-shirt I really think that there's going to be a subset of us JohnnyJustComeBack/Americana/Londoner that has to set new tones for DIY at home. |

But that's for grunts like us, upitty rich folks like you just write checks to RedCross and ask your lawyer "Hey Larry are you sure $375,000 is enough to get us into the next tax shelter this year? I'm thinking $575,000 is what we really need" Regards to arthitis, what you need for that is to see some "Baba" in the village, he'll fix you right up. But don't try taking anything he gives you back home to US, course then you'll sabi say cavity search no be yeye 1 Like |

MAke Una no use Arthritis Derail this thread. Na una talk am say no Other topic. Infact no laff for this Thread on Serious issues. lol Now my 2 kobo on this matter of Materials used in Nigerian Architecture. Like I always say, it depends on the balance between the client, the economy and contractor. i.e what the contractor has in store, what the Client is ready to accept and what the economy can favour. 1 THE ECONOMY The Nigerian Economy isn't organized enough to enable a company that produces the wood they use in Building houses to stay and make profits. Hence me must import, there by increasing cost of Building with wood relatively. infact no business they make am, just say some business no get choice other than to stay. I'm even sure that the government will intentionally allow an unfavourable environment for these simple Building business Ideas so as to allow thoses their paddies that have cement Factory all over africa to continue making it. 2 THE CONTRACTOR Some contractors are too based on how much they can make out of a project, and so if any process will slow that cash flow because they'll have to think extra, then its bye bye to such process. What i think is when contractors pick up a project. the first thing they should think of which is what I think of is how best can I make the house the finest and most creative around the environment and not bring a calculator out to calculate how best he can maximise his profit. CLIENT Some (Arsene Wenger Mr. BABA IJEBU) clients wants to build cheap house. Them want to use the cheapest labour. them wan use the cheapest professionals, them want the cheapest Architectural design, and the funny thing is them still want the finest Outcome. ahh thats not fair. We will never get a creative house from that. Not possible. How will some1 say he's looking for a tiller that will lay tiles for N200/m2.Make Una still dey sorry for all these workers, some get families ooo. (Oga 3strike, no Strike me oooooo. Na only example i dey make oooo no be u be Arsene Wenger oooo ). 4 Likes 1 Share |

skimanski:Oga first of all I have an Axe to grind with you for Dising my able manager like that in the person of wenger ,I dey come for you In other news, just thinking aloud, is creativity not abstract?I have designed many things at work and they cost me nothing as it was all done.I agree that not everybody can build something in their ie develop a visual image head but wont the outcomes of such thought lead to more pricing power on your part as a builder?.In the west where we live, people are bent on developing ways of making their service cheaper not more expensive.People are always on the watch out for new tech to make their service cheaper cos the cheaper the more Biz and customers flow to their site and that them smiling to the bank. |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by skimanski(m): 8:28am On Aug 26, 2015 |
erico2k2: You are correct. But you should know that at the end the work (however how creative it is) will have to pay for its self. Even if you device a method that makes it cheaper, but it's still has a price. And that price is then based on factors which boils down to the 3 arms that I mentioned. Give It to Nigerians still. People are still attempting different ways to make they overall budget cheaper than usual and still with a better results, but ecomomic factors is becoming counter productive to the results. 1 Like |

skimanski:Correct, so am i safe to say mechanization is the way 4ward? cos the way I see it, this is the only way to bring cost down, haven said all that, initial process will still need high overhead. |

erico2k2: Why is it that non of you are talking of learning basic skills like mixing and pouring concrete or carrying bricks manually up three floors? I think it will be a good physical exercise, especially for our returnee brethren who have been missing the Nigerian action I vote for DIY concrete casting for your Foundation 4 Likes |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by KolaShangOne(m): 12:23pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
erico2k2: Been following your thought process with @skimanski My own opinion here.. I think what mechanization does is to Increase Efficiency, reduce cost of labour in the LONG RUN, reduce safety risk Basically, in terms of comparative cost, machines are better. But you have to consider project size, economy, client and price of labour just like @skimanski said. -These machines cost ALOT to buy and maintain -They need trained professionals to operate them at a cost. You cannot expect me to move into a site with equipments running into millions of naira into a site where the BABA IJEBU wants to pay so low. Oga @ericko2k2 and other people living in the diaspora, you know that Technicians charge you per hour, right? Convert that 50-100$ per hour to Naira and I know damn well you can't pay it here.. For the example of a tiler, you expect a Nigerian tiler who has taken pain to buy a laser lever, a spirit level or some other expensive machine and then price him at 200 per sqm and expect a flawless job. But there will always be someone else to do it for cheaper and that's what you get with fallen parapets n so on.. What you pay for is what you get. I have experience in Robotics and Automation. When experts are flown in, they spend 2hrs on the machine, take 5 hours to smoke in the open and they are done with work for that day taking home 7hours pay. We know it's hard to make those dollars in the West but the way we expect things to work here while condemning our underpaid artisans is bad. The DIY process is actually the way forward. It will save you lots of cost |
