spyder880: I actually have work clothes, boots and kidney belt packed in my luggage for my trip in a few weeks to do my fence. I intend to do just that, move blocks and get into it. But I won't work with wet concrete or dry cement, too toxic for me. |

KolaShangOne: On another tangent, why would I even consider an outfit that doesn't have the basic, in my opinion, equipment like concrete mixer? What separates a true professional builder from Baba Biliki the Brikila with his hand mixing? We in diaspora take these things as being normal for the job. Having a concrete mixer, laser level, etc are items that the most rudimentary tool/equipment a seasoned bricklayer that wants to be taken seriously should have in his arsenal. I expect a tiler to have the required tools to guarantee a bang up job. What I don't expect him to do is try to compare what I pay in Los Angeles with what I will pay in Ibadan. If he wants to earn us fees then United and Delta has daily flights to the U.S. 1 Like |

spyder880: Oga spyder, since the topic is mechanization, we can actually hire a hanger crane at 500,000 naira per day to carry about 40blocks per trip up to the 3rd floor.. I'm sure someone can afford it.. |

spyder880: So I intend to start by changing my little slice of heaven in Ibadan. I'll make sure that every artisan that I work with leaves with new knowledge and tools. As an example I am shipping for a laser leveler that I will use on my property. I wouldn't mind giving it away after I'm down with it in the hopes that it will help someone elevate his skill set. http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-line-Rotary-Laser-Beam-Self-Leveling-Interior-Exterior-Kit-W-Tripod-warranty-A-/281681933696?hash=item41958d3580 1 Like 1 Share

KolaShangOne: You've just highlighted another hang up that I have with Nigeria. Why do we need a hanger crane when a simple pulley system or conveyor belt will do the same with very little cost. 1 Like

spyder880:haa BABA, we go mix concrete with mixer, that screeder wont be a bad idea, the retail £300 I might just get one if I find a good source to ship it.I think the way it is now anyone with hands can mix concrete thanks to the humble mixer and the standard ration we have all learnt so far 1 Like |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 1:04pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
KolaShangOne: So let's make the bet interesting. If I win you get to provide free labour for my fence - 1,500 blocks (I'll still supply the materials), if you win then I give you $1,000 cash. Eyin eniyan mi, EgunMogaji has thrown down the gauntlet You have to use your fancy concrete mixer AND THE ENGINEER (the specific one not just anyone) must be onsite every day to measure the fence 2 Likes |

EgunMogaji: Oga Egunmogaji, This pulley system. Does it transfer things from a low to high level or from a high to low level? What's the maximum load it can carry? How many blocks will I carry till the belt wears off? And of course I know it must have a Programmable Logic Controller like Allen Bradley or Siemens which is expensive to operate and experts are needed for writing its "languages". Hanger cranes can be used to carry concrete weighting several tonnes. Secondly, can CLIENTS cope with the increase that using this equipments will cause to their budget? |

erico2k2: My green strategy is to use hip vents, whole house fan and evaporative cooler. The heat will be dealt with, it's the church and mosque loudspeakers that I have no solution for. Maybe nice canceling headsets |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by KolaShangOne(m): 1:15pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
erico2k2: Yes you can mix it.. But can you carry 1 headpan from the pour point to the work point? |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 1:15pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
KolaShangOne: All I can tell you is that it works very well here and there's no reason that it can't work equally well in Nigeria. There's nothing like a single chip of computer in any of the ones that I've seen used and some are truck mounted. They normally use it over here to deliver shingles to rooftops. No experts needed - again Nigerian over thinking of simple stuff. Hanger cranes is an over kill for a 3 story structure. It doesn't have to be a straight shot to the 3rd floor from ground zero, you can offload on each floor as you build upwards. Clients, at least like me, will gladly rewards any company that reduces manual labour in it's operations. I literarily cry whenever I see the old women fetching water at construction sites. It will work if you want it to work and it won't if you don't want it to 2 Likes

KolaShangOne:this where my thinking cap comes in,you know I can build a pulley system with 50K to solve that problem?? its challenges like these that lead the west into industrial revolution, back then it looked like play.make I bring diagrams and reality sketch?

Ok here is a thought, who has ever thought of building a concrete mixer and a concrete sprayer? |
Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by kopell: 1:52pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
@Egunmogaji, sometimes is better not to try and prove a point that things can be done in what we called engineering control, faster and cheaper. Many people don't understand that in west, they don't pay for what you can do, but pay one more for how safe you can do the job. Because liability cost more then the wages. Nigeria as enough young people to work. I rest my case !!!!! |

KolaShangOne:Plz see the two cranes I posted both less than 50k to buy minus shipment in the Uk,the first one has 1000KG capacity, the 2nd one has 1500KG capacity, one bag of cement is 50KG,so can lift 10 bags in one go.Does this answer any of you suspicions? |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by NL1960: 2:55pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
erico2k2: When you wake up by 4am in Lagos to go to the office and return home by 11pm everyday and doing that for 5 days, on a Saturday morning, the last thing on your mind is to go and do DIY of tilling a floor. Just try that and within a short time, when the person drops dead, his people will start blaming the old witch in the village. Abroad, you have no option than to do DIY because paying a technician over there is expensive. Calculate the hourly wage in a place like UK or US and multiply that by 8 hours of work and then convert to Naira and then compare that to what you have to pay here, you will see why you do not have to bother yourself on DIY for little things. To wash my car at a car wash place, i will likely pay N500. Is it because of N500 that i should disturb my peaceful sleep and rest from stress to go and do DIY of washing the car?. 8 Likes |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 3:26pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
NL1960: Nigeria is not unique, people get up early here too. We have traffic too. I don't take my cars to car wash, I wash them myself because I enjoy working on my cars but I do feel guilty because I use more water than the car wash and I don't recycle like they are required to. I do woodwork, build sheds, rebuild engines, restore cars not because mechanics or builder are expensive, not all of them are, I do them because I actually enjoy it. I've seen bicyclists on Nigerian roads, I've seen rc helicopter pilots in Nigeria, etc somehow these folks manage to do these non essential stuff despite the rigors of Nigeria. 1 Like |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by Nobody: 4:44pm On Aug 26, 2015 |
abdulwastecx: So this is part of the reason why a lot of us in diaspora gets into DIY. It's not because we're cheap or workers are expensive. It's partly because we have cheap access to quality tools and materials. A perfect example is the blueprint for my build. I got tired of explaining my idea to architects, so I simply downloaded SketchUp and drew it out once and for all. I have table saw, a commercial grade Ryobi, beveling miter saw, jigsaws, etc engine hoist, car ramps, engine stands, etc all professional grade stuff 3 Likes |
