Emulating The Unity Of The Northerners - My Experience. by Nobody: 1:35am On Sep 01, 2015 |
I was in the FESTAC area of Lagos to see a friend and we decide to go to a place called 'sweet sensation' to cure my sweet tooth . I stopped a bike man who was a northerner and said to him,'take me to sweet sensation,do you know the place?'. He agreed and kept bragging about how much he knows the whole of FESTAC so we stopped the second bike man for my friend,a northerner too but he was honest enough to admit he doesn't know the place but the first guy told him not to worry and just drive behind us. I don't stay in the town,I visit often but still not familiar with the roads. While we were moving,I noticed we were not on the right direction and then he stopped in front of a bar with a sign post 'BIG FISH' and said,'madam,na here'..... Immediately I said to myself, you are the foolish one for trusting an abok! who only understands 'go,come and money' in English then I said to him 'Ah! No be here o! I no go pay you o!. And he said,'ok,I don remember'. We continued our journey. Now,we have driven for about five minutes and I was certain that the ride was supposed to be less than three minutes so I asked him to stop and my friend stopped behind us. We started shouting and blaming each other,he couldn't understand a word we were saying and we didn't understand him too(I blamed myself for not being fluent in Hausa because I was born and raised in the north). He kept shouting 'I no go again, pay me my money, I carry you go am for 'see sentation'(that was how he pronounced it),you say no be him, walahi! you must pay me. He parked his bike, came down ready for a fight and while all these was happening, the second guy kept quiet. Immediately,a good samaritan,an Igbo guy who was fluent in Hausa passed by and helped us out. He gave them the right direction in Hausa and the same guy who was ready to fight started laughing and asked me to climb the bike as he now knows the road. Well,I had no choice than to go with him. When we finally got to the place,my friend said to the guy who carried me,'we will only pay you hundred naira which is our actual fare and we don't care about the distance because it was all your fault,he accepted the money while still pleading with us to add something but we refused. We paid the other guy who carried my friend,a hundred and fifty naira for being honest in the first place and patient too. Then, the second guy did something that surprised I and my friend. He had a hundred and fifty naira, while the other had hundred naira. He brought out twenty naira from his pocket and offered to the guy we gave hundred naira! What! These abok!s love themselves o! I screamed. Especially, the Hausa/Fulanis. They were not even together when we stopped them so,I'm certain they are not related. They are united, they are first northerners before any other. Truth be told,no tribe would have done that. Infact, there is a fifty percent chance that if they were Igbos, the second guy who had a hundred and fifty naira will still charge the guy with a hundred naira extra fifty naira for wasting his time and fuel . They saw us staring at them and starting laughing, waved and went their separate ways. That's what I call unity and love. Wish every tribe will emulate these people. They have one voice and support each other, you hardly see them fight themselves in public and this act is obvious even in politics. I have northern friends and of course muslims, who support Jonathan but the last thing they will do even on social media is to criticize Buhari or any of their leaders. They can only discuss it with you but not in public. Even in their religion, they have sects but they will never criticize each other unlike the Christians who make mockery of themselves openly especially when other denominations constantly attack the catholic faith. An hajiya in my class once asked me to explain to her why the Christians are not United, why do we have different denominations and I answered, 'just the way you have different sects in Islam and the last time I checked, they don't also agree with each other'. With that,I called it a day and walked out of the class in order to avoid any religious argument. Politics in Nigeria is a game of numbers. If we must conquer these people then we must unite like they have done and beat them! 18 Likes 5 Shares |

At OP to start with you. Even in remotest part of Igbolland you can never find a man that can't communicate in English. If those Okadas were to be Igbos I know they must take you you there because this is the route they ply but being a abookii they must have plied that route for 100 times and still can't understand anything there. If you want to know whether Igbos love themselves visit all the international markets in Nigeria and beyond and see how Igbos help themselves. There is different between love and suffering and smiling 20 Likes 1 Share |

I am serving in abuja and I see it happening times without number. A Muslim friend of mine said it is part of their religion to be fair to their brothers no matter what. I guess it is naivity. Unlike us igbos wey don open eye. Everybody is hustling at the expense of one another. Gone are those days when igbos live as one whether u are my mother's own or not. Nowadays even blood brothers fight and kill themselves for money. The reason why we can't produce a president today is because. We can't allow one person come out to lead and others follow suit. look at this past election how many igbos come to contest. 4 how can u win an election when the igbo voters supposed to count as numbers to ur advantage are divided to other parties. That's wrong. 1 Like |

BuddahMonk:Nwanne dalu U always say the truth Following the devastating effects of the war, 20 pound policy and indigenization policy, igbos were pauperized. Communities contributed to send people to school, individual gave out scholarship, thousands of young men were taught trade and settled and the effect is manifest ttoday. Infact, there is no middle class igbo man that is not involved in one socialist programme , Every tribe helps each other in it's own way 8 Likes 1 Share |

castro316: Stop spreading lies, Mister! If you are sure of what you are saying, which prominent Igbos contested in the presidential elections in the last 12 years? Can you provide the facts and figures for the benefit of your readership? Can you explain why the Northern muslims have continued to maltreat and relegate the Christian minorities in the North and in the Middle-belt to the background? Why is there so much blood letting and killings in the North and Middle-belt? It's people like you in the society that turn blind eye to such evil and injustice, and permit the atrocities to flourish in the land with your silly lies and propaganda. Be sincere and objective for once even if the truth is bitter and hurts! Austin4lif: Austin4lif: 2 Likes 1 Share |

I have always be amaze the way one a'boki would come down from one lorry from Maiduguri, another from a lorry from Sokoto meet at Benin and starts behaving as if they were twins. I am not sure if I have ever seen two A'boki quelling. . Another thing I like about them is that they are trustworthy. There is a filling station in my area that is guided by them, if it were my people. One night a tanker would come and they would pump all the fuel in it, then you would not see it again. But not so for the A'bokis. If you give one of my brothers 50 cows to take to the bush, that would be the last time you would see the cows and my brother. . The thing I like most about them is that they are contented with little. You would an A'boki pushing wheelbarrow in Benin. During the course of his work he would see big house, big cars and other beautiful things of life. Those things hardly touch him, you would see them happy, laughing, smiling. If it were my people, in that state they would go into arm robbery. . If truly riches is contentment, then the A'bokis are the richest people in Nigeria. 5 Likes 1 Share |

asha80: My dear if u can't see the truth there is no need to argue. Igbos non leadership curse comes from a source. A particular problem we face and that is lack of unity if not only unity, lack of a unified direction as igbos. How is the ohaneze fighting to create a one leader who will move for the cause of the igbos. Without that that seat is a no go area. Thank you. 2 Likes |

We are not talking about being fluent in English here and it's possible for any bike man irrespective of the tribe to get confused, may be not in this way. You know me not to be an 'efulefu'. You know how much I love and support my tribe but sometimes we have to leave sentiments aside and say the truth. The friend who was with me that day is also a nairalander and saw what happened saying 'that is why they will continue to rule us and they keep using the southerners'. Please how many northern leaders who supported Jonathan in the last election, have come out openly just like Fayose and co to criticize Buhari, even those who didn't support him before the election? If there is any,pls I would love to know because I can't remember. As a student in Unibuja,I had a case with my landlord and reported him to the police. I needed a strong witness to nail him and unfortunately for me,the people to help me out were all his brothers. They come close to me and say 'no mind Ahmed,he no be better person'. Ok,follow me to the station and testify against him, they wouldn't do that. I sat down In front of my gate one evening crying. Then my neighbor, a man who was only seen once in a while,a retired Judge was driving by,he stopped and asked me why I was crying.I explained everything to him. He said 'enter the car' and we drove straight to the station. He stood in for me and ordered the arrest of my landlord immediately. The next day,two of the policemen who I think are from the middle belt said to me, 'hmm, you must be a very lucky girl for an Hausa man to support you against his brother. Now,I am not saying what they do is totally right but not being united is one thing Igbos have never done. Do you know that majority of the APC supporters who attack Igbos all the time are Igbos? Then few yorubas. They have Facebook account where they rain curses on their tribes men with the Hausas and Yorubas cheering them on. One of them even changed his name to 'Uzor Mohammed Buhari' and his wife also added 'Aisha' to her name . Your name is sorry as an Igbo man,if you dare not support his write up. BuddahMonk: 5 Likes |

asha80: So what you think is the problem. I ask you again what do you think is the problem. I dislike ppl who complain and don't try to ask. What could be the solution. Its no use yabbing me cos I won't change the situation or solve the problem. You don't have to agree with me just to let u know from my own opinion that. Once this problem is solved within us, there will be at least a head way then may be in the next 12 yrs we may come up with a president finally. 2 Likes |

castro316:I am not the one who complained guy you did and I simply faulted the eg you gave simple..if you want an Igboman to be president then that man is who other ethnicities would want to vote in or are comfortable with irrespective of what the Igbo nation might feel about the man..if all igbomen decide to vote one man and others don't it will still not get the igboman president since that I your utmost concern here....by the way if you know the socio-cultural make up of the Igbo society right from time immemorial and behavioural pattern you would know why on the average Igbo people dont really have a herd mentality..there are advantages and disadvantages...this is one of the disadvantages 1 Like |
