Dark Skin VS Light Skin by easystudy101: 5:11pm On Aug 29, 2015 |
www.lifeforyankee..com Among akata people for hia, dem get dis tin wey dem dey always argue about. Dat tin na de color of dem skin. Yes oo! Dos wey get light skin dey tink say dem beta pass dos wey get dark skin. And dos wey get dark skin no like light skin people. Dis tin wey I dey tell you be VERY serious mata for hia. Ee dey even cause serious quarel for among family members. Light skin family members dey feel say dem beta pass dos wey get dark skin. Even sef some parents dey show more love to de pikin dem wey get light skin. Dis na sometin wey I don witness with my own korokoro eyes. And as skin color dey separate one akata pessin from anoda one, na so de way dem hair dey too dey separate dem. De more ya hair take style dey resemble onyibo pessin hair, de more suprerior wey you go feel. No be small tin oo! Even for office, you go hia tory as light skin akata and dark skin akata dey jam head for. De light skin pessin dey feel say im dey closer to onyibo people pass dos dark skin akata. Light skin dey feel say dem get more onyibo blood pass Africa man blood for dem body. For hia, de more you separate ya sef from Africa, de beta wey tins go be for you. Lol. Africa don suffer for dis yankee people hand oo! I no blame dem sha..., na we wey dey allow dem to do us anyhow. Now how dis light skin vs dark skin wahala really start? Well..., history say de tin been start during de slavery time. Dat time de oga dem (slave masters) been dey sleep with de slave women. And when dem born pikin, de oga no go wan make dat pikin to mix with de oda slaves. So na dis pikin wey get light skin like de oga wey dem dey keep for house. Dis light skin pikin go do de house work instead of to dey work outside for sun and rain. And dem dey eat beta food and wear dress wey beta pass dos wey de regular slaves dey wear. And den as time come dey pass, dis light skin pikin go come begin feel superior to de oda slaves wey no dey live for main house. Den de light skin people come begin call dem sef CREOLE. Dem begin separate dem sef from de oda akata people. And as time dey pass, dem begin see dem sef like onyibo too. Aftarall dem papa na de oga of de house. But trust de onyibo wife of de oga! She no go eva give dem chance to claim anytin. Most times, de onyibo people dey reject dis half caste pikin dem. And even till today, onyibo no dey too accept pikin wey any of dia memeber born with black pessin (dat one na sometin I go write about oneday). So since onyibo no accept dem as one of dia own, and dem no wan mix with dark skin people, most of dis light skin people dey always look down on dark skin akata people. Now dis one come dey make me to wonda. As far as I know, skin color no too get importance as I been dey grow up for naija. Although some people dey bleach dem skin to dey light in complexion, we still no accept de culture say light skin pessin beta pass. In fact, wetin I know be say, people dey marry opposite dem skin color so dat dem fit mix de color for dem pikin body. No be until I come dis country wey I come see how skin color among dos wey get African ancestor dey ova important. Na wa oo! |

Nice story rendered in Nigerian pidgin English. Unfortunately, what you have just written is the truth. The american society is very obsessed with colour of the skin. Growing up in Nigeria, we never laid any emphasis on the colour of one's skin and everybody is treated equally. Nigerians often tend to look beyond one's skin colour into the inner attributes of that person when making relationship decisions. Coming to America, the emphasis laid on skin colour becomes excessively apparent. |

I've lived in America all my life so I know how serious this issue is in the African-American community. Many feel that African-American males lust after light skinned females due to self hate. But OP you're right about skin tone not being a big deal in Africa and Nigeria in particular. In Naija, yellow and ebony babes have friendly conversations and relationships without any skintone drama. |

aim5: It is quite a big issue. One's skin colour is over-emphasized on in this country. I never became such colour aware until I got here. From what i've observed, AA males go after light-skinned or white spouses because of their better behaviour than the AA ones. AA males feel that AA sisters have a lot of attitude and drama going on. It is not really because of self-hate. I think that AA males are more comfortable in their skin than are the the AA sisters. 1 Like 1 Share |

bigfrancis21: I mean skintone can play a role in some cases, but AA males in general like attractive women period. Hell, all men do. And you're right about AA men being more comfortable in their skin. I guess it's because darkskinned men are viewed as attractive, while people feel darkskinned women aren't as attractive as their lightskinned counterparts. 1 Like |

aim5: so true, you will never see a Genevieve Nnaji or Mercy Johnson seen as beautiful in America like they are in Nigeria but in Nollywood their are some of the top actresses now. This shouldn't be a surprise though America is a multiracial country and there is a racial hierarchy where light skin is on top and dark skin is on the bottom, especially when it comes to women and beauty but in Nigeria it is a monoracial country where almost everybody is black African. However That doesn't mean Nigeria is perfect when it comes to race though, we do have skin bleaching in Nigeria but that issue is minor vs. the issue of race going on in America. |
Re: Dark Skin VS Light Skin by Nobody: 4:52pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
anonymous6: Skin Bleaching is a problem. But I find the topic to be very annoying because you'll have some Nigerians shouting up and down that you can't be light without chemical enhancements. As you're right America is multicultural and unfortunately, black beauty is at the bottom of the totem pole. Latinas, whites, Arabs, Indians (from India) are propped up by the media as more attractive. Personally I think black women shouldn't listen to mainstream media anyways. Y'all don't need to seek white validation. Just my two cents. 3 Likes |
Re: Dark Skin VS Light Skin by anonymous6(f): 5:07pm On Sep 01, 2015 |
aim5: that's true their are light skinned Nigerian women that don't use chemical enhancements and they are not mixed either, but there are some ignorant Nigerians that know no better sadly. When it comes to African American women I agree they shouldn't let that bother them but at the same time these women are born in a country where images in the media, other American communities and their own African American community(especially the men) are putting that in their faces all the time, some will inevitably feel it psychologically, and it starts at young ages. Its like what Akon said America was not built for black people. 2 Likes 1 Share |

anonymous6:Yeah you have your Tommy Sotomayor types who aren't exactly uplifting black women. But he does point out ratchetness, which I can't hate on. Other than that, I'm repulsed by him. And I know it's difficult, but black women, especially in the Western world have to not give a damn about European/Western ideals of beauty. It's sad when you have black women wearing weaves and bleaching just to be accepted. 1 Like |

I'm African American and never cared of a person's skin tone. African Americans are closer to the most influential whites on the planet so it is to be expected that their asinine ways of thinking will influence them first and then rest of the world. Colorism is the byproduct of their racism and their racism has went global. If blackie isn't bleaching their skin somewhere, in some other way they're kissing white people's as.s, might as well wish you had white or light skin too. I could less about white's toxic way of thinking, there's always some ungodly perversion mixed into their ways. Don't care what they think, Black will always be beautiful. 3 Likes 1 Share |

aim5: I do really think that the Tommy Sotomayor guy is doing a great job by being honest and upfront about issues concerning the african american community. To be honest, from my observation African Americans hate to criticize themselves or admit that they have issues in the first place which should be worked on. Everybody, group, tribe and nation on this earth has an issue. They love to put the blame on others for every issue that they have and hate direct confrontation or being told the truth. Tommy and I share similar personality. I can be very direct about issues and will always tell them as they are. In life, sometimes we just need to stop and do some soul checking on ourselves, for that is the only way that we can grow. If we choose to keep on ignoring that there is a problem and act like it doesn't exist or blame it all on others except ourselves, then there can never be improvement. Tommy is just being real with AA issues and the tirade of response comment and speeches coming from AA ladies is representative of their preference to rather deny that there is a problem than admit that there is a problem and seek ways to improve. Now, some people might not like my words but I am just keeping it real. 2 Likes |

I am light skinned and I love my dark skinned sisters they are short of fabulous. I am not the type of light skinned person that is described in this post....I love my complexion but I love dark skin as well...its great... nothing like a dark and lovely commercial for those of you that live in the usa...I love those commercials.... and I love dark skinned men... nake me feel like royalty..... black power. |
Re: Dark Skin VS Light Skin by anonymous6(f): 9:55pm On Sep 02, 2015 |
bigfrancis21: you are right but the difference between you and Tommy is, Tommy is plain nutts and rude with his criticism while you are articulate and respectful about your criticism. However would it make a difference how criticism is done in the african american community because as you said which I agree with most african americans don't listen to constructive criticism at all and either label it as HATERS or attack the person in full force; Oprah, Bill Cosby(yup another topic), Charles Barkley, Chris Rock and many others have felt the brunt of it from their own community when they criticize the community. Even though thats the case Tommy seems to be adding fuel to the fire in his own community. |
Re: Dark Skin VS Light Skin by fightforchange1(f): 10:11pm On Sep 02, 2015 |
one thing the aa community could do is to make a show about skin complexion... dark skin women have to change their definition....not let others define them.... mothers could buy their daughters black barbies... black movies black music.... some dark skin women are very stupid..... they better dress that up.... get a weave, braids, earrings, clothes and rock the chocolate.... vera sikia onyeka onweagba iman liya kebede beautiful black women. let them be our example...... |
Re: Dark Skin VS Light Skin by fightforchange1(f): 10:38pm On Sep 02, 2015 |
for one thing I think brown skin makes a person look way better than just plain white skin... its not super attractive..... its ok looking but brown is better from my perspective I think I possess the sight sight of a true black... lotta people round the world might think like another race and the men who demean dark skin women their reaction to the women is not natural or normal..... nuff said. |
