DICK4UCKPUSSY: Onicha once occupied some areas around Bini kingdom and Obi doesn't mean parents in Igbo. Igbos use both Obi, Eze, and Igwe. And nobody pays Homage to Oba of Bini...and to say that is very disrespectful. 4 Likes |

DICK4UCKPUSSY: If by first class monarch, you mean a corrupt ex police man who threatens people from other states but depends on extortions and handouts from state governments, igbos don't have that. If your first class monarch refers to emirs who colluded with imams to kill innocent citizens who don't belong to their faith and religion, igbos don't have that. If your first class monarch means an oba or Alafia with many wives and children than he could remember who when he dies requires a live human to be buried with him or a successor who has to cannibalise and eat parts of a dead one...igbos don't have such. 14 Likes 1 Share |

OdenigboAroli: The Igbo word for king is eze and not Igwe. Igwe means heavenly or divine and was used more as appraisal until it came to be a title. Ezeigwe means divine King. Obi is purely the symbolic name of the king and his authority. Eze Abagworo is Obi of Abagworoland and his palace is Obiabagworo and isi-obi of Abagworoland. When my subjects come to pay me homage they hail Igweee! in acknowledgement of my heavenly divinity and they say Eze igadi ndu ruo oge ebiebi which means may King Abagworo live long. 8 Likes 1 Share |

cybertyrant:Alaafin means owner of the palace. It is the title adopted by the monarch in Oyo town. Oba means king. Ooni is the head of them all. All the kings in Yoruba land originated from the first ooni of Ife. |

wadetaw202:Asaba is the capital of Western Igboland while agbor is our westernmost "Iga"(fortress). The Western Igbos are our brothers, and just as we went to war due to their actions in 1966,we'd also go to war again for their sakes if they're prevented from joining the Biafran Empire! In Igboland, the title for King is Eze..Obi is used for dukes of certain regions in Igboland while Igwe is the same as saying >your Majesty< In Igboland, the most powerful kings are 1]EzeNri :> he's the spiritual king of Igboland 2]EzeAro :> he's considered the junior brother of the EzeNri and is the custodian of the long juju 3]Obi Onicha 4]Obi Aboh 5]Igwe Nnewi 6]Obi Agbor 7]Amanyanabo Opobo These are the prominent Igbo trad. rulers that we've..contest the legitimacy of any of them at your own peril 4 Likes |

Why people confuse Obi with Oba is beyond me, both of them have entirely different pronunciations and have no relationship whatsoever. The Igbo word for King is Eze. An Eze might just be addressed as Eze, or by other words signifying his authority. Obi also called Obu in other Igbo dialects has different meanings in Igbo depending on pronunciation. 1. Obi= Heart 2.Obi = A kindred 3. Obi= A place of gathering for a town/village/kindred. 4. Obi= A male name, a shortened version of a longer name,eg Obiako, Obinze, Obinweze, Obiechina( May the kindred not go extinct), Obiefuna( a variant form of Obiechina, with both meaning the same thing). Whenever you see an Igbo man with "Obi" as a surname, ask him for the full version of the name, Obi as a surname, like Chukwu, is always an abridged version of a longer name. 5. Obi = A title an Eze takes, indicating that he represents the will of the Obi( the kindred/village/ town) as the case might be, his palace also now becomes a place of gathering for the people. 6. Obi = A house in a man's compound, where he entertains his visitors. The Obi is often built away from the the living quarters and figuratively represents the man's strength/pride. NB: We have Obi of Ora ifite, right in the heart of Anambra, in Ekwusigo LGA. 1 Like |

1. Igwe= Heaven, also eluigwe meaning high heavens. 2. Igwe= A god that has powers to control Igwe( heaven) Igwe is said to be greater than ala/ani/ana/Ali( the earth. goddess) this is represented in the saying " Igwekala". 3. Igwe = A name an Eze is addressed by, indicating that his right to rule is ordained by the heavens and the god thereof. 4. Igwe= An Igbo surname, often an abridged version of long list of names eg, Igwegbunam, Ukaigwe( Igwe's word) a name often given to children whose parents conceived via help from chief priests of Igwekala shrine, etc. 5. Igwe= Metal 6. Igwe = bicycle. 1 Like |

Well, that's my understanding of Obi and Igwe as applied to Ezes in Igboland. Eze is the Igbo word for the English word, king. In summary, a king can be called any other name in Igboland, but he still remains and is addressed as an Eze. Even this truth holds in borderlands of Igboland, for example in Abriba, the Enachioke is the Eze of Abriba, in Igbanke, the Enochies are the Ezes. |

cheruv: Igbo's have been bashing nigeria since you established your Biafra radio of hate. So, Igbo's are more guilty of bashing others. So, I don't understand why you are crying wolf here as if you are the victim; you are a actually the villain. So stop crying here like a berieved fooool and face the music. It is the seed of bashing you have sown that you are now reaping. Did you ever have the opportunity to check ojukwu's head when he was alive? Then, you would have gotten the perfect understanding of who an apari is. Have you seen osho baba's head lately? Ojukwu's own was worse than that. I am sure ojukwu would have been called Hammer Head of Rock or Headward when he was in secondary school. |
