And you know,optometry is not yet well known in nigeria.
To a layman,its all about cutting glasses.
And even in uniben,its hardly regarded as an important department.
Now,i dont want to wash its dirty linen in public so i wont say more (lol).
I once asked why it wasnt in the college of medicine like others or at least a faculty on its own.
The answer i got was; It wasnt as specialized as ophthamology.
Its in faculty of life sciences here in uniben,dont know about unilorin(that's why i asked.
Anyway,i find the course really very interesting {having to learn about the human eye and about lenses,curing some diseases and contacts,etc}

Some final yr studs i know don't.
(although i do, not because of optometry tho. tongue )

LOL,i read this twice.really insightful. I think one problem optometry is facing nigeria is publicity.very few people know what optometry is. A large percentage of the populace would still visit a 'DOCTOR' when they've got eye issues.they are oblivious of tha fact that there are specialists.Optometry has got potentials and is fast gaining ground as evidenced in the US where it is now the 12th most lucrative job.this is the US am talking about(where even drug pushing myt be considered as a jobgrin).i think in a couple more years,optometry will be up there

I feel it's because dentistry is quite popular, everyone visits that dentist frequently, Maybe not in Nigeria but abroad.
it is older than optometry but age here cannot be considered a factor. optometry should be more appreciated than dentistry but it's not in Nigeria because there are few specialized optometrists here. in places like India, optometry is regarded as a special kind of course, it's much more appreciated than her sister. conclusively we can say that the area/continent/country plays a major role on which is more appreciated.

God bless you for this Eye-opener. you said A country like India Is at the fore Of Optometry. Contrary to what DR Uduak said, Nigeria is at the first flight Of countries where Optometry is even considered as a Medical field of study. And yes, I concur with the fact that there are A slew amount of specialist in Optometry in Nigeria hence the introduction of the course in Universities to broaden and elongate our national tentacles. just 4 Universities are offering it at the moment.

exactly! such a wide course should share a faculty with medicine like Dentistry does. I once saw a 400l optometry student reading, mehn! you need to see elaborate diagrams of laborious standards, more like those diagrams in anatomy where you can't even tongue the labels.

Lol. Some Optometry students wear lenses even though their sights isn't frail..
