Actually, it isn't cosmetics, it's consumer goods - non-toxic household goods to be precise. Infact when she spoke about her idea to her friends, agent/manager they all told her to just get a perfume endorsement. The whole thing started because she was a first time mother and she realised a lot of baby products contained toxins. Apparently, she didn't want her child to be ill, since she had experienced childhood illnesses.

Even if she chose the cosmetic route, she could have still made a killing, but she chose something dear to her and still made a killing. The name of her company - The Honest Company, for anyone who wants to do their own research.
