OKorowanta: Yes, you are correct. People tend to generalise individual experiencies. No tribe is completely free of certain negative tendencies but with peculiar prepondrance in some cases. Thanks all the same. I've put it behind me. |

erico2k2:I got qualified after may diet, I havent attended the induction ceremony as the last one was held in May So I don't know who D.O.D is, neither do I care TBH I'm still Urhobo And yea, I'm still an aaccountant! Also, WRONG analogy up there.... Requiring them to know how to change their brake pads or oil filters or whatever is asking for too much, I mean it's not like you can prepare bank reconciliation statements or anything. Nah, let's just stick to the original matter and use the exact 'analogy'. Therefore let's assume that they can spell the words 'mechanical' and 'engineer' Have a lovely night rest |

erico2k2:So you have all the facts? Speaking live from a Soho bar? Lol! you've been abroad for God knows how long. Yet you think you know all that's happening with the Urhobo race. Please wake up and smell the coffee! Anyway, there's something called the 'blind-privileged' syndrome. I will just attribute it to that. I don't even know why you're taking it personal. We've established the fact that you are educated. Well, so am I. But your clan and mine put together aren't even up to 5% of the Urhobo populace. Maybe you need to go to your village and see for yourself. Also, you just had to tell me you're in Soho. I mean, it was so pointless but you just had to. PS; Ain't nobody got time to calculate ya age. Tomorrow is Monday, I need my sleep. Some of us not in 'Soho' still have to hussle, you know 1 Like |

Favolly: I have gone through this thread with a lot of interest and honestly, am baffled at some of the generalisations that have been thrown up here. I have just 2 questions: Did anyone conduct a census on the number of educated Urhobo people, before they came to a conclusion that they constituted 5% or 50% of the entire Urhobo ethnic group? Are your comments based on just your own personal observations, or the general stereotypes that keep floating out there? Did you observe a high level of illiteracy among the Urhobo folks, living in either: (a). the slums; (b). the cities (c). urban settlements? The reason I ask, is because it is difficult to win an argument without verifiable data. If the level of education has been dropping among the Urhobo ethnic group in the slums, then it cannot be said to be representative of the entire Urhobo ethnic group as generally, literacy levels among slum dwellers are poor. If the literacy level among Urhobo in the villages are also poor, then it means the state govt is not doing enough to invest in the education of the citizens of the state, irrespective of whether they are Urhobo, Ijaw or Itsekiri! More needs to be done at all levels! By all state govts! If your sampling is done among Urhobo in different parts of Nigeria, and the observation still remains the same, then it would appear that somehow the Urhobos have been denied the benefit of, or access to a good education. Or it could be that they are not sufficiently motivated to seek education. But you would need a lot of proof to support this assertion. There is a lot that can be said, but one needs to be careful about tossing remarks like this into the public domain, without adequate facts to back it up. Just my 2 cents. |

laudate:God bless U.this is what I was trying to say hence I was steering her to an urhobo high achiever in her field. I do not know where she grew up but like U said it might be an area where the people do not get educated. I grew up in sapele and only left due to uni in the East. All my friends went to school. One of my classmate in pry school represents Nigeria at the UN on renewable Energy and he is based in warri. U know some people just assume.. |

laudate:I clearly stated previously that it is my opinion. I never claimed I have all the facts. I obviously didnt conduct a census neither was I quoting NBS figures or anything. I spoke based on my experiences with people I have interacted with overtime. I have met a lot of people from there who either aren't educated or who are but still think like they aren't. I'm not even talking about villagers, because I've never even been to my village. The other day, a family friend was lamenting that after looking for so long for an Urhobo man to marry, she still ended up with a Yoruba man. I asked her why she was so particular about marrying an Urhobo man. She said she didn't want her children to be treated as an outcast after she dies. Apparently according to the 'tradition', a woman must be buried in her own home town or else her children would have no stake in her properties or something silly like that. So I'm like 'Seriously? That' mentality is what held you? Ever heard of medical power of attorney??' This is just one example, I've met many others, and it's something I've been worried about for some time now I don't understand why Mr. Dafinone is taking it personal, I didn't make generalizations. Also, I have the right to my own opinion. His clan is educated, yes. But I still insist that doesn't consist 5% of the populace. I dont need to conduct a census to know that, there are thousands of them out there 2 Likes |

erico2k2: If it's dressing the ijaws are kinda different from the others Language- d urhobos and itsekiris borrow word from each oda ( a lot) Marriage- there are more urhobo/itsekiri marriages dan itsekiri/ijaw or urhobo/ijaw Every oda thing. Virtually d same I'm talking from a delta state perspective |
