Another Strike At Nigerdock by Nobody: 4:01pm On Sep 07, 2015
NIGERIANS in BONDAGE, WHITE MEN in PARADISE!

On Friday the 4th work was about to begin as usual, just a routine pep talk from mgt. reps first to rally the workers to their jobs. What nobody expected was that their response. Someone complained about lack of motivation amongst worker due to low pay and excessive charges on the last paycheck. Then a mgt rep responded with a harsh word, next a worker cried out in anger then another and another, next thing you know, people are downing their tools. They had had enough.

Another strike begins.

The workers on site gathered together then began marching from the company's sandy offshore division where workers have been working under the scorching sun for about 8 - 10 hours daily for years welding, cutting, grinding, painting, rigging and basically doing all the productive work that rakes in millions for the company while the white men just patrol around monitoring, bullying and intimidating the black men with little or no productive input.

They march passed the workshop where the workers have pit latrines for toilets and joint leaky cubicles for showers. They some welders from there and moved on peacefully chanting solidarity songs past the parks where blacks park their personally purchased rickety bicycles and whites have their company issued standard motorcycles to help them navigate the large company premises properly chained up from the hungry black men.

They moved past the 240-man office where luxuries such as bottled water, milk, tea, beverages even tissue paper have been reserved for everyone except the blacks that actually do the work that bring in money for such things. Blacks can manage tap water. After all what they need to cool down is just water.

Not much ahead they were joined by painters who also like welders and fitters on the island are among the people most exposed to paints, chemicals, harmful gases, dusts, heat and suffer the most injury such as cuts, bruises, loss of fingers etc. With little to show for it. Imagine life in a company where you have been doing all the work for years then a white man comes and gets 20x your pay.

The site white men realising the severity of the situation ran for their lives to their WHITES’ ONLY housing quarters fully equipped with a restaurant & bar, a shore club, tennis court, swimming pool, a mammoth kitchen and every convenience a person could ask for, all for whites only of course. Blacks will only dirty up the place.

Just passed the company canteen were workers have been forced to pay to ingest rotten fish, maggot infested meat and all manner of soups with assorted human hair and flies and mosquitoes, (independent food vendors are not allowed in) they were further joined by scaffolders, who perhaps are most at risk of falling from heights hazard and yet are paid the least.

The march ended at the company’s administration block were the real head honchos are. Surprisingly by this time the block was nearly deserted. They island security men were already loading the last batch of whites onto their luxury speed boats and off they went safely to their Victoria, Lekki and Banana Island homes. Much to the disappointment of the workers who went only to air their grievances and not to harm anyone or even damage company property.

After the solidarity chanting had died down their demands began;
A trusted workers union or representative (currently a union is forbidden on the island).
Salary increment to normal standard (Nigerdock Workers earn less than half the current rate in the Oil & Gas industry).
Removal of outrageous taxes; blacks are taxed ranging from N10, 000 to N 90,000 monthly.
Payment of outstanding bonuses on project load out (whites get alert immediately the project ships off).
Provision of consignments i.e. milk that helps flush out toxins that workers inhale daily.
Improvement of facilities.
Etc

Funny enough these are normal requests, basically standard provisions of any company.
“Simply pay us what we deserve, remove the shady taxation” they vented. Everyone knows the exorbitant taxes does not get to government revenues as there are no tax statements to be retrieved at any point in time for the workers.

“Gives us the bonuses we deserve for a job well done” they added. Whites always throw an overnight bash every project end as their bonus is always in the millions of naira. While blacks get a free lunch from a very questionable canteen.
#THEREISGODOOOO
Shortly after, a series of meetings were held by an ad hoc workers’ representatives and a few mgmt. rep (who feigned ignorance of the workers’ plight), the outcome? A promised relief to the workers by Monday 7th of September.
Thereafter the workers left happier after airing their concerns and hopeful of a better life at the company they had given so much to and received so little.

No lives were lost.
No properties damaged.

Let us hope for the sake of these hardworking Nigerian men and women and all Nigerian workers everywhere there shall indeed be relief.
God willing.
God help us all.
