Governors, NWC at war over e-registration

By Our Reporter

THERE appears to be no letup in the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the hitherto largest political party in Africa hops from one challenge to another. The latest of the crisis emanates from the party’s biometric registration of members across the country. The exercise which pilot was supposed to have begun in Edo State last week is threatening to further sink the already troubled boat of the once boisterous PDP.
According to investigation, the exercise initiated by the national leadership of the party has run into a storm and may crash the party except urgent step is taken to remedy the situation.

Daily Sun investigation revealed that certain members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) are disenchanted with the acting national chairman, Uche Secondus, who they accused of not carrying them along in the nomination of members of the Committee and choice of consulting firm for the project.
At the inauguration of the Committee headed by Chief Raymond Dokpesi, chairman, Daar Communications, Secondus had declared that the deci- sion to conduct e-registration was informed by the compel- ling need to return the erstwhile ruling party to the people and ultimately, restore internal democracy.
He also announced E-Collect Technologies Limited as the consulting firm that would crisscross the country and interface with the state chapters of the party to ensure success of the programme.
A party source told Daily Sun that certain members of the NWC expressed reservation over the choice of E-Collect Technologies Limited, which they claimed was shrouded in secrecy.

“We don’t know how they
arrived at the company and how much was given. Every- thing has to be on the table be- fore we can partake in it,” the source said.
The source further argued that governors on the party platform ought to have been fully briefed on the need for the exercise in order not to send the wrong signal that they were the targets of the biometric registration of party members. “The governors are wary of losing their grip on the party structures. We need to carry them along; we must not send the wrong signal that we are at log- gerheads with our governors.”
The biometric registration of PDP faithful across the country was an initiative of former Enugu State governor, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo. Nwodo had in July 2013, while unveiling his e-registration programme said it was meant to return the erstwhile ruling party to the ordinary Nigerians, whom he noted were original owners of the party.
“Every Nigerian willing to join the PDP will be given an opportunity. It is their decision and right to become members. We want to bring about an online registration of member- ship of PDP. The membership card will be in biometric form showing the member’s face, eyes and thumbprints. The bank account and the designated banks to be used for the registration will be made public,” Nwodo had said.
His dream was, however aborted as a result of gang up by the PDP governors who spoke in unison against the project at the party national executive committee meeting.
The party governors then were apprehensive of losing their hold on the party secretariat in their respective states.

…Party not dead – Prof Alkali

From Fred Itua, Abuja
NOTWITHSTANDING the massive loses the party recorded during the last general elections, former political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Professor Rufai Alkali has declared that the PDP is alive.
Alkali’s declaration is coming on the heels of plans by the Peoples Democratic Institute (PDI), an arm of the PDP to organise series of trainings for leaders of the party from wards to the national level.
Director-general of the institute, Dr. Lanre Adedayo, said the plans on how it intends to go about the training series would be unveiled soon.
Alkali, erstwhile spokesper- son of PDP reminded Nigerians of the patriotic sacrifice former President Goodluck Jonathan made when he called President Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him long before official results were declared.
“I think it is wrong to say that the party is going into extinction. Yes, we had some challenges. There was a lot of trauma after we lost the elections. It should be expected.

No politician wants to lose elections. PDP’s loss was huge. People have been saying that PDP is dead. I do not agree. PDP is not dead. If you are saying PDP is dead, show me where is has been buried.
“Nobody plans to fail. Every politician plans to win elections. We did our best during the presidential election, but God had the final say. Before the elections, there was
apprehension in the land. But Jonathan’s single phone call changed everything. No matter what we do as Nigerians, we must not forget what Jonathan did and how he saved us from danger. Nigeria has created a new record in the political history of Africa. Jonathan’s phone call to Buhari was an act of God. His case should serve as an example to our political class,” Alkali said.
