A 21-year-old man, Nura Abdullahi, has been sentenced to a jail term of five years for unlawfully dealing in 62 kilogrammes of marijuana.

Abdullahi, who was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday, was said to have become visually-impaired in the prison custody, where he was awaiting trial since his arrest on March 19, 2013.

His eventual conviction on Wednesday by Justice Mohammed Yunusa of a Federal High Court in Lagos was on the strength of his confessional statement and the exhibits tendered by the prosecution.

Abdullahi, who was only arraigned on September 3, 2015 on one count of unlawful possession of marijuana, had promptly pleaded guilty to the offence.

At the Wednesday’s proceedings, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s prosecutor, J.I. Aernan, reviewed the facts of the case.

To further prove the prosecution’s claims, Aernan, who held the brief for M.U. Ewah, tendered, among other exbitits, the bulk of the illicit substance recovered from the convict two years ago, as well as the convict’s confessional statement.

According to the prosecutor, the convict was arrested with the 62 kilogrammes of marijuana on March 19, 2013 at Ezewanta Motor Park, Ijora, Lagos State.

He said the offence contravened Section 11 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

“We most humbly urge My Lord to convict the accused person based on his own confessional statement coupled with the evidence adduced before the court,” Aernan prayed.

In his judgement, Justice Yunusa said he was convinced that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The defence, in a brief allocutus, urged the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convict.

It noted that Abdullahi was a first offender, adding that he had been through bitter experiences, including the loss of his sight, since his arrest and incarceration since March 2013.

Justice Yunusa sentenced Abdullahi to a prison term of five years, to count from his day of arrest.

He ordered the destruction of the hard drug  recovered from the convict by the NDLEA.
