Seen this happen to countless people around Alade market and then Airport hotel nearby.
They will always offer you a better rate than the Northerners who are the real BDC agents around
the money is never complete at first
they work in teams.
when they are done you will think you were 'jazzed'.
be smart!

I have been in Lagos for many years o. This is not my first time of changing dollars o. I have changed millions in dollar and Naira. It just happened that way. It was a lesson learnt. Please learn from it too. Thanks

Sorry, it's quiet sympathetic. Those guys there at Alade market are thieves. Next time go to the burea de change at the airport before getting to the entrance of MM2, their offices are located on the left side of the road.Check into the office and do your transaction. Make sure the dollars u are collecting are stamped. Am sure that u can't be defrauded there. They are all Hausas right inside that compound.

This has happened to me before at the same Alade market. Your story tells my story in the exact same way I was defrauded. I learnt when they hand over the money to you. It's complete or a little short of maybe 1000 or 500 and they ask you the bring it and let them recount it. That is when the trick is played. My advice when you are changing your foreign currency from those people. Once you count it and it's complete or either short of 1000 or 500 don't hand the money back to them. Tell them to bring the difference or you recount it for them in there presense. This I have learned. They know how to distract you once u have handed over the money back to them and they are trying to hand it over back to u.

this scam is very old...most lagosians know better than to change fx around the airport hotel/alade market axis. Unless you actually enter the BDC office

Even the mallams are not saints. One day I went to first bank for W.Union transaction in Lagos Island. I went to mallams to change money. As I gave them the money they changed it for me.
When I crossed the road they stopped me to claim I gave them fake dollars. I was crying and I called upon Holy Ghost to save me and He did by sending a giant man who put me in a taxi.
The best way to change money is to go to the bank or to go to a Bureau d'change office.

Always transact business with the mallams in Alade Market. Do not make the mistake of failing into the trap of high exchange rates with the road side boys from Ikeja Airport Hotel to Allen Avenue.
Re: The Day I Was Defrauded At Alade Market by emmydee(m): 6:08pm On Sep 09, 2015
Those non-hausa guys there are fraudstars that operate from Airport hotel. The ideal thing is to patronize the hausa guys in their shops not outside. A military guy once shot and killed one of those yoruba boys 4 d same fraud.

I only do such transactions at Eko hotel or federal palace hotel where the mallams have their shops.

ALADE market and Airport Hotel at ikeja are no go areas for me when it comes to dollar exchange.
If it's foreign exchange received from western union I simply go through the process at my bank and pay in the equivalent in naira into my bank account.
A few hundreds got the op defrauded.

The best way to change money is to go to the bank or to go to a Bureau d'change office.

I was specific about the activities at Alade Market. The mallams have recognised shops and will give you their complimentary cards. You have no business exchanging money along the road if you're close to the Alade Market shopping complex. As a matter of fact,if you present yourself well, they are ready to follow you to any nearby bank to complete the transaction.

I fell pray to this kind of scam 1n 2005 and lost US$300. It was along broad street exactly in front of now defunct Savannah bank. When I meet those guys hanging along the road, all the warning signs were there: they wore white Agbada with cap, one of them had a gold plaited tooth pretending to be Hausas but sounded like Yorubas in their spoken English. They offered me higher exchange from what obtained then so I settled for them. They asked me what denomination of dollars I brought and I told them 3 pieces of $100 bills. One of them hurried off to go and bring the Naira leaving the other behind so that I wont quit the transaction. Traders around there who saw us cast funny glances at me, my mind was asking me, when did Yorubas begin to change money? Plus, why dont you find a bureau de change a few meters away? As I was thinking about this, the guy who went for Naira hurried arrived with speed with another man dressed like him. The new member's hands were filled with so much Naira of different denominations and he delivered them to me scattered. As I made to arrange the money before counting, He said he was in a hurry people were waiting for him at the office I should give him the dollars so that the other guys would stay with me till I finished counting.

I said no he had to wait. Then he said I should let him see the dollars. I stopped counting and brought it out. H e said he wanted to touch it since I am now touching his Naira. Well, I gave the $300 to him, he touched it, I was looking at him, he gave me back. I continued counting the Naira and discovered that it was about N1000 short of our agreement. I demanded the balance and he said that was all he could pay. Quickly I handed him back his Naira and all of them hurried off in the same direction, satisfied. I was left wondering why they were so glad to leave me so quickly. It was not until I got to a bureau de change a few meters away that I got to know why. The mallam told me that my dollars were fake. I quickly examined them and saw they were markedly different from the ones I gave to the guys on the street to touch. Infact the mallam told me he knew what happened to me I should not explain. He said it happened there daily. He asked me to throw the fake papers away and disappear from that environment because those same guys con someone and send police to search the person, and when the police recovers the fake dollars from you, 'oga i no follow' must come out. Its a total package.

As for the guys at Alade, they resume in the morning and leave at close of business. They are so many and you could instantly see they are not Hausas. They are not smart like the ones on the island. A police van filled with policemen is always parked in their midst, so its a game involving the police again. Be careful everyone.
