Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is very relevant for every website that want to rank high in the most popular search engines in the world.Google.com for instance receives about 30 billion search queries per month, people visit the internet daily to find information that interest them. With the help of search engines people are able to search and find specifically what they are looking for. SEO is a basic necessity for every website. 
There are many SEO ethics you can implement on your website to increase website traffic, I use Google most times to find information online, out of twenty websites that I visit, nineteen of were suggested by Google. Most Organic traffic come from search engines, so its very necessary that you implement SEO in your website.

In this regard , we will discuss ten SEO tips to increase your website traffic.

#1 - Create A SEO friendly Website

SEO starts from creating a website, when designing your website, you should have SEO in mind. Avoid using too many JavaScript and flash programming language like Ajax. Search engine bots are not humans, they can only read texts not images.Avoid hidden codes on your website that is not visible to your visitors.  Optimise website loading time, remove any program running on your website that reduces website loading time. Its best to use mostly HTML language in structuring your website as it does loads directly from the web browser. Also ensure that your website contains the necessary meta tags like :-

Meta Description:


This meta tag is very important as it gives search engines a short description of what your webpage is about. This should contain not more than 150 words, so that it doesn't look like you trying to spam the tag.



Meta Robots:


The meta robot meta tag specifically gives search engines permission to either crawl your webpage or not. The tag should contain the "index, follow" . This tells search engines toindex and follow the webpage.



Meta Distribution:


The meta name distribution tells search engines the geographical area your website covers. This can be either global or local.


Meta Keyword:


Industry experts say this meta tag has been devalued following Google's Penguin update due to so many webmasters abusing this meta tag with so many keywords. From my experience, the meta keyword is still very relevant , at least if not for Google, some search engines still use the meta keyword tag. This tag should contain your webpage target keyword. 



Title: Your title tag should contain the content subject matter and this should also include your target keyword.


There are some other keywords you should include in your website and webpages, the above tags are some of the basic ones.

#2 - Do Keyword Research

SEO involves thorough keyword research. Start with identifying what your website is all about,  do a keyword research on the identified term. Use good keyword research tools to find keyword phrases that suits your website niche.

#3 - Create SEO Friendly Contents

A well structured webpage makes it easier for your webpage to be found by search engine bots. Always ensure that all your webpages contains the necessary meta tags, a title containing your target keyword for that webpage. Use keyword in your contents, don't over do it, at least mention your targeted keyword 2-4 times in your content. Add the title tags which contains your target keyword to your links. Try to avoid misspellings, as it could increase bounce rate

#4 - Publish Quality Contents And More Often

The saying goes that "content is king" . Search engines love fresh  quality contents, which is why websites with the most traffic are websites that are offer real value to their visitors and  regularly updated . Always make sure you put up quality contents that are relevant to your niche. At least your content should contain 600-1000 words. If you create the shorter kind of contents , ensure that it provides useful solution to a problem. Don't engage in SEO practices like content spinning, copy-pasting and otherwise that are harmful to your site ranking on search engines as you could get penalized .

#5 - Build Backlinks

Just as "content is king", "backlink is queen", backlinks are very necessary for you to rank high in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs).Without backlinks it is almost impossible to rank high in SERPs. Google take backlinks very serious and consider links pointing to your website as a sign of how relevant and useful your content/webpage is. You can start building high quality backlinks by commenting on forums, blogs with high Pagerank, backlinks and global rank by traffic. Submit your contents to social bookmarking websites like Reddit and Stumbleupon. Get listed on popular directories like Dmoz.

#6 - Use Keywords In Images

When search engine bots crawl your website, they only understand texts not images. Which is why you should always use the "alt tag" in your images. e.g

#8 - Canonize Duplicate Contents

Google hates duplicate contents, which is why Google advise webmasters to always canonise duplicate contents on their websites to help give search engine users better result and experience.For instance if you have webpages that have same contents, use the link attribute for canonization to canonize this webpages into the one you prefer search engines to show on their SERPs. e.g HeroKeys.com/seo-tips/ and HeroKeys.com/seo-tips-2015/ , I will insert the link attribute for canonization in the head segment of the latter URL webpage to tell Google that HeroKeys.com/seo-tips is the preferred URL.

#9 - Create Sitemap And Submit

Create a sitemap of all the webpages on your website and submit to search engines. This will make it easier for search engines to crawl and index your website. Make sure to always manually resubmit your sitemap to search engines whenever you update your website.

#10 - Create A Robot.txt File
You should create a robot.txt file to give search engines permission to crawl your website and which part of your website you don't want to be crawled. It should contain:

User-agent: *
Disallow: 
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Sitemap: http://www.herokeys.com/sitemap.xml

,change the sitemap address to your sitemap address, save it as robots.txt and upload it to your server home directory.

Hello OP.....just so you know....many SEO experts have generally agreed on the fact that Content is no longer King......when it comes to driving targetted traffic to your article........ PROMOTION is king......QUALITY CONTENT then follows suite......

I disagree with you and I believe Matt of Google will also not agree with you, because it all starts with creating value of some sort otherwise your website bounce rate will increase which might lead to your rankings going down to trash.

Always create quality content first , then watch your backlinks grow which leads to more targeted organic traffic.

M glad you mentioned Matt....i am not against creating quality content.....don't get me wrong.....the goal is attracting traffic......and promotion is the key....it is your promotion strategy that brings in the backlinks.... You don't write an article and keep wishing that someone will backlink ..and that it wil rank on search engines on auto pilot......NO ...thats a dream.......write high quality content....a must....??but promote your article like your blog depends on it.....an absolute necessity !!!
