embarassed My poor Nissan almera N16 2000model is giving me sleepless nights, it over heat and now the gasket has been changed, 2 sensors have also been changed am guessing cam and crank sensor. But with all this, the car refused to start, so the spark plugs were cooked today and the car was behaving like it wants to start, cranking and the almost to start sound but it refused to start. Abeg what is the next thing to do.
1. fuse is ok
2. brainbox is ok
3. coils are getting spark
4. Alternator is ok
5. Kick starter is ok
6. Fuel pump is pumping
7. No check Engine light
8. it is chain not belt in the engine
9. Everything in the cars is working AC, radio, bla bla bla.

my mechanic says to change engine but I believe the engine is still solid prior to the over heating incident. Says the compression is low reason why the car won't start.

I guess your mechanic must have done a bad job of changing your gasket, it's your mechanic you need to change.

Changing mechanic is the first thing on my mind. I just wanted to confirm from gurus what the problem was just to know whether the guy know what he is doing or not.

Any other useful suggestions please.

Timing marks are off, see it all the time.

Just like GAZZUZZ and DECOtech, i can bet on my last kobo that timing was set off.

Tell him that you consulted another mechanic who said timing is off and he should reset or tow the car to another mechanic that can.

I hope he didnt install 2 gaskets?

nope he didn't install 2 gaskets, I have talked to him. He said he has marked the timing chain before he removed it and he is sure he placed it back from where he marked it. But I have told him if he follows my instruction on the timing chain thing, the car would start. I have gotten a timing chain diagram online for the almera. We will begin work together on Monday, if all goes well, I will update the house on the development.

Thats one probable mistake.

No matter how precise his marking the chain is the settings might still be off most especially with a twin came set up. Timings are set at top dead center of crank shaft which is usually marked on engine block as well as chain sprocket. Thats usually the first step.

...any reasons as to why those two sensors were changed?...overheating and cmp/ckp sensor replacement don't add-up.

before he even began work, he had told me that it's possible he changes the gasket and the car will refuse to start and possibly I will need to buy new sensors. Also he said the car could also start smoking blah blah blah.
So after the gasket fix, they conformed the car wasn't choking and light or is it spark isn't geTting to the coil packs, so he said I needed to buy new sensors which took three days to source cause they were scarce in the market (according to him). The 2 sensors had magnetic end the one ontop was facing one of the timing chain wheel.

Gurus in the house, thank you for the quick response and timely intervention. I never showed the mecho the timing diagram, after opening the valve cover he checked and said he knew where the mistake was and that I should not tell him anything until he has finished satisfying himself, if it didn't work then we will follow my diagram. He battled the chain thing for 2hrs30min finally the car came alive.
Now the remaining issues with the car now are
1. When the AC is switched on, the engine losses power at fan speed 1 but at 2 and above, the car shots off and mecho says I can't use AC for now until I change things that aren't revelant to ac please gurus what could cause this.

2. When left alone for a long time, the idle of the car begins to depreciate. What could cause this?

3. The cold start is appalling it takes it 10-15secs with the throttle depressed for the car to start. Mecho says the cold start sensor has only one wire affixed, the other one has removed and the sensor may need changing to stop this.

thank you guys o, no check engine light also airbag warning light used to blink b4 but now doesn't stay on again though I have not yet scanned the car.

One wire fixed on the engine coolant temperature sensor has nothing to do with this, that is why this job requires training. Now use go to ur scan tool, go to actual values and check what you have there. You should have it has somefin equivalent to abt 126○ F + or - . If you have it far way too lesser it could cause your rough idle. Better still run a scan

Check the timing brother.

...and next time you want to open up the engine, make sure its totally cooled. that's standard procedure., takes like 5-6hours.

Gurus in the house, sorry for troubling you again ooo, but the task at hand is not finished until you listen to my story.

So after coming back from my travel and the car had been abandoned for like a month, I started the car today mon 14 Sept and the first start the car came alive one time (I didn't believe it) but went off as one ba3 terminal came off.

Then I took it to a professional (I have know this professional since I was in pry 3 or 4 then he was a driver to certain pupils in my sch) he has been a mech for 20yrs plus and works on Beemers and Range rovers. To cut the long story short, he started the car several times and it started once, am really surprised. So his verdict was that the overheating had caused pistons to get stucked reason for the untimely start and that if it was timing chain, the car will not even Revv at all.

Note, I left the car running for 30mins and the tacho didn't budge and the car didn't die at all, Ac was left at fan speed 1 engine sound changed but car didn't die. His verdict is that th engine is still good just that I have to live with the cold start thing.

Still no check engine light
car doesn't smoke
the temp guage now moves at a slow and steady pace like it should

Gurus please what's your verdict, for now, Thanks in advance

Cars don't fix them selves
Re: Gurus Please Lets Put Our Heads Together And Solve This Puzzle by 9icetoo(m): 8:39pm On Sep 14, 2015
your idle issue might have been related to the throttle position sensor which may have reset itself. Nissans are known to have this issue. If no codes are present at the moment, then throttle away bro. Glad your problems are over. You are lucky the missed timing didn't wreck your engine. My friend is presently sourcing for a 1AZ FSE engine after his mechanic missed the timing after changing his head gasket. the valves all went kaput as soon as the car was started.

OGA 9icetoo thanks for your input, the 2000 to 2002 of this vehicle variant was fitted with a manual throttle body, the one with the rope thing b4 it was upgraded to sensor controlled one. mine falls into the manual category and what I noticed is atimes, the rope or cable leaves the default settings and starts dangling rendering the throttle incapacitated.

Also I have heard there is an exact engine removed from a nissan sunny that they want to sell to me fo 15k they sai it had issues with some valv thing I didn't quite understand that term. But as of now will stick with thi engine till it points a gun to ma head
