Fellow Nairalanders,

With great joy in my heart I give this brief account of how the internet helped restore my baby's health and prevented possible long-term complications. My lovely eight-month old baby suddenly began having seizures few days ago. It was so severe that it worried me and her mum so much that we though it was a spiritual attack. She would suddenly stiffen her neck and shake with great energy (seemingly unconscious), and then return to normal mode in less than a minute.

It happened like 3-5 times every 15minutes. Everytime it occurred, we felt like weeping as the ever lovely baby seemed to have been strangely hijacked. We rushed to the hospital and some blood tests were recommended. On seeing the results, the Doctors quickly knew it was a brain infection coupled with Malaria. Although some of them were worried that all other symptoms of Malaria and infection were absent in the baby - no high temperature, no yellow eyes, baby actively playing and sucking. The doctors immediately commenced treatment with strong antibiotics passed directly into her bloodstream + antimalarial drugs. Twice daily she was receiving the medications but on the third day, they got more worried that there was no improvement.

My wife was drastically losing her joy while everyone else was praying. On the evening of that third day, my wife picked her phone and began an extensive research on Google.com for possible causes of such condition. She stumbled on a research paper that presented the Negative Effects of Soybean in Babies. This paper caught her attention because two days before the seizures began, she introduced Soybean into our baby's food formula (on a Doctor's recommendation). The article stated that Soybean inhibits the production of Trypsin which is very essential for infants and also triggers irregular impulse in the brain neurotransmitters thereby causing frequent seizures which, after a long period, could render the child epileptic. The paper added that the inhibition of Trypsin could lower the immune system (which could make doctors believe it to be an infection).

We immediately stopped feeding the baby with the formula but we didn't notify anyone of the finding to allow a continued treatment. By the following day, the seizures started fading and in just two days, it went away completely. We are still in awe with this discovery while we are very glad that the baby is back to normal life, but I felt - this might help someone someday.

Wonderful!!! The power of knowledge.

Come to think of it, illiteracy is the major cause of problems in Nigeria, medical or otherwise. Have you ever wondered (with due respect) why Northern Nigeria has more people with deformities and abnormalities. Illiteracy is the major cause.

Thank God for directing you to make this research. I once suffered severe ulcer which I treated for many years with Doctors prescriptions, without solutions. One day I decided to make research on the internet, and that was when I stumbled on one American doctor's blog. I was so surprised that many people have had similar ulcer issue as me. But they were able to treat it completely with the prescriptions and instructions of the doctor right there on his blog page.
I did the same thing and after completing the dosages within the time frame, I never experienced the ulcer again. It's years now.
While not neglecting the importance of seeing a doctor, it's also essentially important to also make our independent researches on certain issues that may be affecting us.

Would you be so kind to give a hint if what worked for you. That will be of immense benefit to ulcer patients community here. Thanks a million.

I'm not trying to take a vibe on Northerners. I was born and bred in the North, lived in the East but presently working in the SW. Everywhere I go they constitute over 80% of beggars and most of them with one form of deformity/handicap or the other. Like I said, I do respect and love the Northerners.

Thank you for enlightening us. The internet is the most powerful source of information today. I made a comment in the past one week on a thread where a banker had an adverse drug reaction that almost led to his death if not that he was flown abroad for treatment. My comment bothered on using the internet to check up my health before going for tests or seeing a doctor.

One guy replied by saying, " Sir, You are a public health risk ". I ignored him because I know what many people do not know so I don't respond to every comment.

The internet has rewarded my life in so many ways. I have friends and colleagues who lost their lives after relying solely on doctors advice and went home thinking all was well. They never lived to tell the story.

In your own case, it is very obvious that after God, your baby's life was in your hands. Your doctors were clueless.

Good for you however it will be wise not to encourage this form of self medication through the internet humans are bound to go the extreme.

Dont just jump into conclusion. you might not be lucky next time

It is advisable to see a doctor atleast for monitoring purposes and professional advise

Relying on your doctors advice alone is like relying on a fake prophet. .

Kudos.

Some people prefer operating like Zombie like everything a Doctor says is God's word.

Doctors that have schedule and have a lot of people to attend to. Doctors also suffer fatigue working under stressful conditions.

He died in a Federal medical Centre. His own is just one example too many to mention.

Quack serves as doctor's negligence here.

Ulcer Prescriptions:
1. Metronidazole (1tab, 3x daily), Clarithromycin (1tab 2x daily), Omeprazole (1tab daily ).

The doctor instructed that the drugs must be taken for complete 14 days, and alcohol must also be avoided all through.
I stuck to these instructions and it worked greatly for me. You could try it too.

Please also make efforts to consult a doctor for more advice. Thank you.

To the OP i say a very big congratulation. And this is to buttress the fact that most doctors we have in our hospitals in naija are nothing but incompetent irrespective of where the hospital is located its all packaging. I almost lost my husband in the hands of quacks who call themselves doctors. How can someone go to hospital and without running a test you go ahead to administer drugs and even when tests are carried out u dont take time to know what the patient is alergic to or even how he may react to the drug based on the composition of such drug. Like i said twice this has happened to my husband and we have come to a conclusion that we will not visit naija hospitals again until we travel abroad out (in pipeline) eventhough the illness is there but we will manage it till then. The last one that happened was when my husband was feeling terrible back pain and he went to hospital in Victoria Island and doctor gave him drugs without running a test and advised maybe the sitting/lifting position. Three days after taking the drugs the condition grew worst and he repeated the visit and they gave him another drug all these he was still been charged to pay ooo. Still the drugs didnt work. On the third visit which was on appointment with a so-called specialist who ddnt do anything other than to tell him how to sit and how to lift thing; he was charged even higher this time. After about 5days no improvement, my husband decided to google the whole symtoms and to his surprised he was suffering from chronic typhoid and malaria and he had just returned from a country where this is prevalent. On realising this, he decided to go make 'trouble' at the hospital only for a trailer to bundle him out of the way at VGC roundabout, it was by God's grace that the accident was not fatal. With the incident he could not make it to the hospital again and was advised by a friend to visit a nearby Health Centre and lo and behold he had chronic typhoid and malaria which had lingered but due to the fact that he is not stressed and also takes good care of himself this was reason the illness did not manifest that much. Anyway i must also say that he was given a prescription at the clinic which would have been the last nail on the coffin because the drug nearly kill him after three days of administering it. Again he went to google and realised he would have died if he had continued with the drugs this made him visit the clinic, this time he was attended to by a different doctor who even question why he was given such drug in the first place. But all this questioning would have just been a 'voicemail' if the worst had happened. So i will suggest that we should embrace technology and the knowledge that comes with it otherwise we will all just be at the mercy of this our killer doctors around. But what baffles me again is the fact that when you go abroad the nigerian doctors you meet there are much more professional and on point that what we experience here - WHY??

Please forgive my long write-up

You sound like one of them.......

If you read through, he said " they stopped the formula" while treatment commenced and the formula was even prescribed by one of you (I'm guessing you are a doctor) This is how they go killing people.

Before treatment, the right thing was to ask what happened in the last few days, where they had taken the child, what the child had eaten etc.

Thank you so much for your comment. A lot of people see doctors as their GOD. These days we have doctors chasing money and forgetting they need to brush up and be abreast with their colleagues out there.

A doctor tried to kill me years back, a "Consultant" oooo.............she is supposed to be a professional. When i presented her prescriptions to the Pharmacist and sited that something was wrong, even the "pharmacist disagreed with me" I took the drugs and went straight to a doctor friend who screamed and asked if i was sure that a doctor prescribed the drugs........I had evidence na......I just flashed the prescription note with doctor's name and signature with hospital stamp, my friend could not believe it..................This was in 2010 at a Federal hospital in Garki 2 Abuja.

They (doctors et al) think we challenge them about their profession, but we are only stating our concerns as humans.

The earlier people begin to learn, the better
