Price is too high for a tecno phone, i'd prefer to use Nokia asha than buying that sh*t.

@OP I only agree with you on one thing.

Tecno brought the feel of the internet on Android phones to poor Nigerians.

If not for Tecno, Nokia would have relegated so many people into using java phones only as the Nokia symbian phones were highly over priced.

Still, I can't use a Tecno phone for anything. Their screens and camera aren't what Tecno claim they are.

Are you trying to defend a N70,000 "flagship" device without an ordinary gorilla glass 4?

Your "flagship" is s t u p i d enough to forget the importance of a powerful screen protection, but wise enough to include a N50 worth of nylon (leather) screen guard as usual?

Have you ever seen a Samsung flagship device without such?

Samsung's 2014 flagship has a scratch resistant screen, with IP certified dust and water proof tendencies.

The likes of Sony Xperia Z3, Z4, and Z4 compact are shatter proof; i.e. hit a sledge hammer on the screen and watch it stand firm and active! Drop in a pool of water for 30 minutes and keep surfing the net - These manufacturers are not stu.pid. Mind you, Z3 is still less than N80,000.

Bros, please wake up from your slumber; there is a reason why Tecno will never sell their devices outside the shores of West Africa.

TECNO has just launched a new flagship device for 2015 – the TECNO Phantom 5. The MobilityArena.com team was present at the launch event and enjoyed all its glitz and glamour. We already had a unit of this phone even before the launch event, so we got to play with it and discovered what an amazing device it was upfront.

Going through Nairaland and other Nigerian forums, you will see and hear people voicing their various concerns. A TECNO phone for N70,000? Why would you or should you buy a TECNO phone for such a huge price?

This is a reply for all those complaining. I don’t have my allegiance sworn to TECNO or any other brand. Rather, as a more privileged observer these are my thoughts.

TECNO as we know it in the Nigerian market pride themselves as makers of value for money smartphones. Over the years they have done well in that aspect and provide Nigerians with affordable smartphones. In fact to be honest, TECNO has contributed to bringing the internet to many Nigerians.

So, people associate TECNO with cheap devices for the mid and lower class people that can afford it.

I remember 2013 when TECNO launched their first flagship, TECNO Phantom A. People cried wolf, but those that bought it bought it. Next was the even more expensive Phantom Z. Some people even wailed louder, and myself and many others still bought it.

Now we have a much better smartphone and people are still wailing. Again, I believe that people will still buy. People understand value and the Phantom 5 is great value. Devices in its class cost N20,000 more than it does, so it still follows TECNO’s mantra of providing value-for-money smartphones.

Looking at all the cries, complaints and criticisms. I came to two huge conclusions:

The people that are crying do so because they have not held used or even touched this phone
They cry foul because this is a TECNO
Like I said earlier, we already had this device even before it was launched. Mr.Mo is currently playing with his as I type this article.

We all at MobilityArena.com were amazed at the phone. The design and finishing, music quality both on earphone and external speakers – all superb. Trust me: this phone is miles apart from the TECNO phones you used to know. We were greatly impressed by what we saw, and we think it is worth its price.

Brand perception is one of the major things TECNO now has to tackle. People are resistant to change, and as TECNO wants to change their perception, many people are yet to come to terms with doling out that kind of cash for a TECNO device. People are complaining because it is a TECNO.

If it were a Sony, HTC, LG, or even a Xiaomi, we would all be cool with it. But note that the devices from those manufacturers in this class cost much more than the Phantom Z does. There is the value.

There are two advice I have for TECNO:

They should do more of marketing and put more effort to change that perceptions Nigerians have of them.
They should try as much as possible to provide a software update for their phones, especially fr a flagship device like the Phantom 5. That will go a long way in attracting the techies who are the most vocal users.
It would indeed be a sad plight to buy this phone and not get any software update.

If TECNO can do more to market themselves as premium maker (while their younger brother Infinix focuses on mid-low end devices), then assure us of a software update even if its just a single one to Marshmallow, then they have just completed the package.

Please before further criticism, first have a feel of this phone, compare its price with the price of its direct competitors, then come back and let’s talk.

How much did TECNO buy your conscience for? 70'k Gbanjo phone.. grin

No matter what you say, TECNO can never be a match for SAMSUNG.

TECNO is like the INNOSON of Phones.. Nice idea, but that's all it is.

TECNO phones depreciates in value faster than a Nokia 3310.

Im currently using a Techno Phantom z and i must tell you i bought the phone for 51k last September and i am not disappointed. I even heard its now 64k, 59k on jumia. Well I am not buying another Techno phone if the operating system cannot be updated @ such prices. If they are gonna charge us for high end phones they should start making high end upgradable phones.
While they are at it, they could also make arrangements for rebranding.

Re: Reply To All Those Bashing The New TECNO Phantom 5 by texazzpete(m): 5:37pm On Sep 18, 2015
using the argument that this is better than a Phantom Z is just plain silly. Technology improves with time, and the chipsets in the phantom Z have been phased out with more powerful, more capable chips at the same volume pricing. Ditto for the screens. RAM is cheaper to include. Basically, the added features are a natural progression of technology.
Nobody pays more for an iPhone 6 than they paid for a much less powerful iPhone 4S.

More importantly, you KNOW you're guaranteed software updates if you go with samsung, Sony or lg Flagships from the previous generation which are still more powerful than this device and definitely come with better cameras.

If you're going to get a high end Chinese phone, go for xiaomi. At least , you're guaranteed updates and a much bigger user community.

I would like to start with a thumbsup for techno for stepping up their game. this company has been growing fast and making nice phones for a while now. my take on this issue is if u can afford it, buy it and if u can't then don't buy.
different companies make different products and their is always one that will suit your style and pocket out their.
just so you know apple makes a 17 inch mac air that cost something in the vicinity of 500,000k, it's ridiculously overpriced but people still buy it so let those who can buy the techno do so and let the wailers wail.

Tell Chibez to explain to nigerians why they should spend 70k on a phone you can't upgrade its OS na. He has the review unit, yet can't put up solid reasons why we should buy it. Smh**

I can bet he can't spend 70k on that phone because of the upgrade ish.

Yes! Tecno batteries ain't reliable, only with fake capacity they give people... After some months later you will hate the battery and phone... e. g Tecno M6 in disguise.

And their phones don't have second hand value because their device are easy to get bored of.

Lol. Tecno @ N70,000 !!!.
Tecno should have called this phone the Tecno comedy 1, because it seems that the company is experimenting on a foray into jesting and comedy entertainment.
I dont blame them!! They have seen gullible and poor nigerians to deceive with useless inferior phones.
Though, after some months on the market, this latest crapno would have dropped to N40 K.

When I bought my Tecno phantom A, my very good friend laughed at me. He bought his Sony Experia Z2 and was shouting to me "Shatter proof, water-resistant". He would drop it in water to amaze me. Fast-forward to about 6 months later, he was charging the phone, when someone's Tecno phone fell from d table and hit the Sony with its edge. My brother, the so-called shatter-proof cracked like an egg and lost sensitivity. Upon d large amount of cash he doled out to repair the phone, it never recovered from that accident........and I am still rocking my Tecno for 2 years+, since that incident.
My problem with Tecno is these, and that's why I would be porting soon, probably to Xiaomi
1)The RAM size is poor.
2)The OS is not upgradable.
3)Poor customer service, which only functions well in trying to sell their phones, but not in repair.
However, I have not had cause to repair my phone since I bought it, however, the charging port of my friends dwh give wahala everytime.
4)The camera quality detoriates with time.

Sony Xperia Z2 is not scatter-proof, your friend is ignorant. The phone only comes with a gorrila glass, i.e. a mild protection against scratches and unnecessary lines on the screen.

These functionalities do not mean users should use their devices carelessly.

The advantage Z3/or Z4 has over the Tecno is clear. I can take a selfie while swimming in a pool, a Tecno user won't try such. Under a heavy rain, I can answer any call comfortably. A Tecno user on the other hand would seek protection in a Kiosk.

please those of us who are judging battery with ram of a phone should just go and do simple research about those two items. my conscience forced me to comment cos I can't understand why people choose to be ignorant. let me give you a hint, ram has to do with the space readily available for your phone to load open apps, the bigger the space the bigger the number of apps that can stay open in the background without needing relaunching. though more power accruing from more cpu cycle is needed to launch an app than to open it in from the background, I guess that is where battery is needed and battery power is needed to maintain the open apps open in the background but it is just some very minute amps of charges.
So as for battery, even though you shouldn't ignore the battery capacity, you should be more concerned with the general software optimisation and cpu architecture. bigger battery dosent really entail more talk time, so with this little clarification, I wish you tidy up your research diligently concerning phones before diving into arguments.
