I'm surprised to hear that before you can be made a king in Warri, your mother must either come from Itsekiri or Edo clan in addition to your father being from there hence the reason for not selecting the eldest son of Olu of Warri, Prince Shola. Instead, the younger brother of the late king was installed as a new King.
So, can I ask whether Igbos have any claims over Warri like we have been hearing all these while?

The Ibos feel they are part of Delta state cos it is the river Niger bridge that separate them.
They just crossover for business and end up with one lady and have children then the next thing they do is to invite their fellow Igbo brothers to crossover. Before you know it they start creating a miniature village in Delta. My Country people ( Yeeboos) pls the east needs you go back...
Just like the way they are juggling for power in Lagos... These Igbo people will not seize to Amaze me... undecided undecided

Ibo and Warri? Laughing.

It is like saying Buhari or Gowon will go and build a house in Onitsha. Never going to happen, the East is a gathering of some tiny Villages with a population of like 500 Thousand people, across the Niger Bridge.

The East has no connection to a CORE Niger Deltan town like Warri.

First, The kingship of warri has no lineage with Edo
Secondly, Prince Shola not being selected was not becos of the above reason, but the plain fact is Prince Godfrey was selected based on merit..he's the the chosen one.

Its quite shameful that some riffraffs would wake up on a beautiful Sunday morning and be asking baseless questions on the relationship btwn the great Igbos and a city located at the junction of three ethnicities
I know that Nigerians are obsessed with Igbos but I never knew it had gone to these alarming proportions undecided
Its pertinent that the 45M Igbos worldwide prepare incase these obsessive tendencies reach genocidal levels shocked
As for Worri(warri),its a city belonging to the Sobo, Ijo & Ichekiri groups and we the great Igbo nation have no part in them! angry

Infact its BS like these that make me support the establishment of western Igboland as Anioma state kos good fences make good neighbors! undecided

Speculations about the health status of the traditional ruler of Warri Kingdom were on Saturday laid to rest as the Itsekiri nation announced the death of Ogiame Atuwatse II, the Olu of Warri, and announced Prince Godfrey Ikenwoli Emiko as the successor to the throne. The Olu designate was also officially presented to the public.A 90-day mourning period was also declared as a traditional mark of respect to the departed 70-year-old monarch who reigned for 28 years.Within this period, every adult male and female of the Itsekiri nation is expected to have their wrappers tied upside down, just as there will be no burial ceremony, drumming or any other formof party within the specified period of mourning. This was made known on Saturday at Ode-Itsekiri, popularly calledthe Big Warri, WarriSouth Local Government Area, by the most senior member of the Olu Advisory Council and the Ojomo of Warri Kingdom, Chief Tesigiweno Yahya Pessu, after performing the required traditional rites.Pessu performed the traditional rite of smashingon the ground three times a substance tied in red cloth symbolising the end of the era of Ogiame Atuwatse II. This was greeted by severalcannon shots fired into the air as mark of respect to the late monarch according to the custom of the Itsekiris.Speaking after the official presentation of the Olu designate, Pessu said the reaction of the jubilant crowd signified mass acceptance of Emiko.Pessu said, “You can see the crowd dancing. It is an evidence of acceptance. The significance of the rite I performed is to tell the Itsekiri peoplethe passing away of the king. And when a king passes away, a new king is installed immediately.”On the selection process, Mr. Edward Ekpoko said the choice of Emiko as Olu designate was as a result of non-qualification of the first son of the late monarch, Prince Shola. This, he said, was largely due to the fact that his mother was neither from Itsekiri nor Edo. Chief Edwin Ereyitomi told journalists, “The significance of today’s event is very clear. It is toclear the rumour that is in circulation over the demise of the Olu of Warri, which the Itsekiri nation has done today by letting the whole worldknow that the Olu has joined his ancestors and to present his successor. So, this is a process that we really followed. There were no disagreement anywhere about a successor. The Itsekiri have a traditional way of doing their thing and that we have done today.”It was gathered that Itsekiri tradition is clear on who becomes the Olu of Warri, which lucidly states that the person’s mother must be either an Itsekiri or from Benin Kingdom before he can be chosen.

Its Yoruba that has claimed ties with Itsekiri understandably because of language similarity. The Kingship of Itsekiri is rooted in Bini hence this culture of choosing only a Prince with Bini and Itsekiri lineage.

Igbos have no strategic interest in Warri. But the question of whether Igbos played a part in the founding of Warri or Itshekiri, the answer to that is a resounding YES. They have equal claims as the Yoruba descendants but often one of the least talked about history of Warri. Even as the Itshekiri Kingdom litrature acknowledges this very important historical milestone. Read below the excerpt from the Kingdom:

"History reveals that in several waves of migration before the 15th Century, and some a little later, groups from Igala in Nupe country came in through the creeks; Yoruba from ljebu-Ode, Akure and Owo found their way into parts of the Kingdom and a group from Aboh {IGBO}also came in. Some along the coast came in through Gulani/Amat" - Itshekiri Association of Canada.

Who said they're Igbos? You guys need to attend English language classes...Why don't you direct your misgivings to the Itshekiri Association that acknowledged ABOH as one of the founding groups of the present Jekiri?

Op,
You have no sense. Ibo own Warri! It was the original Owerri and when Oyiboman come to attack us our brave warriors fought and defeated them and killed them all but our reason for creating a new Owerri inland, in what is now in Imo State is because forefathers got tired of life as fishermen and wanted to farm yam instead....so we relocated inland. Some of our people are left behind but settlers to the town could not pronounce the Ibo name Owerri......and they bastardized it to Warri.

We are coming back to get our Owerri when we get Biafra.

do not mind the biased people from the East. They are useless when it comes to the relationship Edo has with Warri. I know too many people from Delta in Lagos, you get to learn a lot from them. They don't want to be associated with the ibos, yet the foolish Ibo people from the East won't let us hear word. Ibo people why do you like forming attachee? I once met an Ibo guy with full Ibo name claiming to be Edo, each time i call him Ibo guy he frowns and gets upset.

Warri is between the Itshekiris, Ijaws and Urhobos and i wonder how your twisted mind got the Igbos into it.
You should be directing your vile filled mind to the three groups to ascertain who actually owns Warri and please leave the Igbos out.

Ibos are in fora night of long knives on a permanent basis for as much as they continue to create problems in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. Think about it, they are emptily proud, dishonest and will do anything for money or gain: the perfect recipe for failure in life! If you see a sane Ibo man, who deviates from this profile, he was born, raised and working in the SW, North or outside Nigeria in a developed society! The ibos can claim anything they want but they will be so shocked that when the rubber meets the road, the rest of Nigeria will send them directly back to their pigeon hell-hole called ibo land and we will maintain and develop our own country while having them surrounded on every side as Ibos are expansionist, greedy and desperate to claim another man's property! To make it easier for them to take other people's land and resources in Nigeria, they always wish Nigeria is not a strong nation like it is becoming again under Buhari and the APC. A strong nation can stand-up to any other nation, and can protect and defend its territorial integrity so far as the economy is doing well, the military and morale is sky high, the people have hope and a progressive life and do not feel that top leadership of the country has cornered their patrimony.

This is why Nigeria was almost destroyed under Jonacluless and the legions of clueless ibos who lead the army, finance ministry, governance, etc. They wanted to weaken Nigeria as much as possible so the country would not be able to mount a strong challenge when push came to shove but they failed! I want ibos to get biafra under a strong and ever progressive Nigeria! They will be 100% fenced in and Nigeria will regulate the flow of human beings, animals and food, etc through our borders as we would not owe ibos any damned thing! They will have no rights to produce any weapons, light or even cudgels or anything beyond small kitchen knives for killing their rodents which they will eat for food. Ibos cannot be trusted, they always wanted to hold down the minorities (the SS) and if it wasn't for strong Nigerian leaders in the past, most of the SS would be slaves under the ibos today!
