Prove your Prospective Employer that you are the best candidate with a well Written CV Curriculum vitae simply referred to as CV is a Latin word which is translated as course of life. It’s a summary of your work experience, skills and education. It is the first thing an employer/recruiter gets of you (applicant) and is mainly used for screening, of which the successful candidates will be contacted for interview. What should it contain? There is no specific template, but your CV should be loaded with relevant information that will motivate an employer to make a positive decision to invite you for interview. Below is what you should include; • Contacts: You should start your CV with contact details such as your name, address, email address and phone number. • Profile/Objective: This serves as an introduction. It should be a few sentence and straight to the point about you and what you hope to contribute for the growth of your prospective employer. Objective is preferable for a fresh graduate/intern, while experienced graduate can use profile. • Skill: This is a very good selling point. Every employer needs an applicant with exceptional skills. You should highlight all your relevant skills that perfectly match with the position using a bullet point. • Work Experience: State the details of your previous work experience, starting with the most recent. You should use maximum of your two most relevant. Include the name and address of the Company/employer, job title, and dates of employment. With a bullet point, outline your main duties or responsibilities and achievements. • Academic Qualification/Education: State preferably your two most recent, include the name of the institution, location, and date of graduation. • Training: If you have any training you acquired that is relevant to the position in question, do well to include them. Start with the most recent first and always use bullet point to outline them. • Personal Details: State your sex (male/female), language etc. Date of birth is not relevant unless it’s stated. • Hobbies/Interests: If you have any that is relevant, you should list them otherwise you should skip it. What are the major things employers are interested in? Though no section should be underrated, the areas that employers are mainly interested in are your enviable skills, work experience, and your achievement. This section is what that can make or mar your chances for interview. In other to make these sections to standout, you must understand the job position you are applying for accurately. Then, Creatively articulate your qualifications (skills, experiences and achievements) properly using a bullet points and ensure that they are capable of grabbing the recruiter’s attention within few seconds or if possible be enlisted for exceptional visit. How can a CV be made exceptional? You can make your CV to stand out in so many ways, but here are my few tips on how you can successfully improve it; • Grammar: There should be no grammatical error in your CV. Proofread it accurately for spelling or misuse of words. Take advantage of neighbors or expert help to ensure that it’s perfect. Use active words such as established, implemented etc. to present yourself as a competent candidate. • Layout: Your most ideal skills should be placed towards the top of your CV where it can be seen easily to enhance your ability to make a first good impression. In your academic qualification section, you should as well list your highest grades first. • Presentation: Make it neat easy to read. Bullet point is preferred for anything that needs to be outlined.
