Is Lagos State Too Big For Ambode? by Orikinla(m): 4:16pm On Sep 20, 2015 |
Is Lagos State Too Big for the new Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode? He is the 14th state governor of Lagos and seems to be luckiest with his opposition party becoming the ruling party of the national government for the first time since 1999. Lagos has a teeming population of more than 21 million people, which is more than the combined populations of the states of Abia, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa. To be the governor of the most populous state in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa is a big challenge, because Lagos is actually bigger than many African countries and in fact, is rated as the 13th biggest economy in Africa and the commercial power house of Nigeria, Africa's largest economy. The most challenging responsibility is bearing the burden of the daily influx of thousands of people from other states in Nigeria and from other countries in West Africa. And majority of these migrants are poorly educated people who claim to be regular supply of cheap labour for Lagos State. But are increasing the liabilities of the government, because they have created more slums with socioeconomic challenges that the governor cannot ignore. The taxes they pay from their low incomes are not enough to pay for the free education hundreds of thousands of their children are having in public primary and secondary schools in Lagos; and now they are also expecting free breakfast everyday for their children! There are even more Igbos living and working in Lagos than in the south eastern states! And they are breeding at an alarming rate. I have seen one Igbo couple with 11 children! The poorest low income workers have the largest families in Lagos. The large population of Lagos comes with challenging tasks for the security and welfare of the state, because the government will need to secure the lives and properties of more than 21 million people; provide enough health care and medical facilities with enough medical doctors, nurses and other medical workers for millions of people; provide regular power and water supplies and provide enough jobs for the people to prevent the jobless from turning to crime.

ideology: Fashola usurped the Tinubu throne and eventually Ambode may decide the allure of power is more enticing than the froggy eye of Bourdillions greedy clingings. But truly Lagos is bigger than any one or two or trio of power mongers and eventually Lagos will overpower its oppressors. As nature always does. |

we have shouted ourselves hoarse about this problem but no show. How can visitors from the east constitute themselves to such irritants? Even the owners of the land don't troop to Lagos enmasse from neighbouring southwest states. I lived in a house directly facing the Iwo road express in ibadan for a year and you need to see the number of marcopolo buses that convey these people to Lagos on an hourly basis.(it is something akin to the desperate journeys of Syrians into Europe). Immigration will and should be a very big topic in the 2019 gubernatorial race in Lagos. There needs to be a special fund for the state. Another solution could be separate and higher fees/taxes/levies for pupils/students/citizens from specific tribes who populate Lagos. Lagos state seems comfortable with it because they have not complained. When it gets to the limit, something from give. Ambode is not the problem but the structure of the country and the resolve of some people to send fresh faced ibos to Lagos on a daily basis. I really don't understand how a people can collectively decide to leave their land in droves like this when there is no war there, heck even Hausa's who are encountering the boko haram insurgency are still in their land fighting it out. As an aside, ambode has not proven himself to be a capable replacement for Fashola thus far, he seems to be too much of a puppet for Tinubu and that will spell doom for him in 2019. The only thing that will save him in 2019 is if the other candidate is IBO backed again like Jimi agbaje ( Yorubas will do anything to keep Lagos away from our eternal enemies). Fashola had a firm grasp and understanding of the problem hence his deportation of the destitute biafrans which sent a message to the larger Nigerian nation of the problem Lagos is facing.( I really miss Fashola) Finally on this issue, the Powers that be (The jagaban of bourdillon) has not deemed this issue a problem, if and when he does, something will be done about it so let's just keep watching until the issue gets out of hand. ( it will get to a head at some point). 4 Likes 2 Shares |

FacelessPatriot: We were between the shark and the deep blue sea and we stuck with who we know. So we should have voted for agbaje who wanted to make ibos deputy governor and obas in Lagos abi? We will manage whoever that won't sell us away even though the person performs below par. in defence of ambode though, the man is reconstructing the ikotun egbe-ejigbo road which is a big relief to millions of ordinary lagosians and not making to much of noise about it. Maybe the man is not one for propaganda and noise making but believes in working silently on the surface. I implore all lagosians to support him the way we supported Fashola for the betterment of the state. Filling fashola's bug shoes in Lagos was never going to be easy. |

Ambode is reputed to have been a very competent Accountant General of Lagos State. But that competence may not suffice for the governance of the state. Many state governors in Nigeria would have performed best as administrators of local government areas and not overwhelmed by the big challenges of being governors. Former President, Mr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, PhD, would have been best as Chairman of his Local Government Area and gained enough experience and expertise to contest for governorship of Bayelsa State. Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo used him to settle scores in his political chess of power to spite the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili and former Governor of Cross River State, Barr. Donald Duke who have more competence and experience than Mr. Jonathan who became confused by the political intrigues of the political mafia of founders and leaders of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who were only using political power for the misappropriations of federal revenue allocations, oil blocks, licenses to import fuel and sharing government contracts for the various ministries. |

OP, don't you think its insulting to say that Lagos has more Igbos than the entire south east region? Have you ever stepped into the region? Do you know the population of Igbos in other regions of Nigeria outside the south west? Its ridiculous how some of you churn out data to suit your innate prejudice and hate. That you see luxurious buses entering Lagos daily doesn't mean new entrants fill those buses. Lagos is a commercial centre so you're bound to have buses from all over Nigeria going into it. Many of those buses you see come from northern Nigeria and yes with a huge Igbo population too. You're myopic and insecure and I advice you to seek more knowledge first. An Igbo adage says: he who brings back home an ant infested wood has inadvertently invited the lizards to a feast. Focussing every economic stimulating infra structure to Lagos of course will attract an overwhelming population surge. When we were saying it you all thought you were wise. You have to live with it as we're still in 'one Nigeria'. Its either you support the development of other regions in the coast or you support the division of Nigeria so you can have Lagos all to yourself. As long as Igbos are still regarded as Nigerians they can reside wherever they chose to unless you start another boko in Lagos. Lol Many will be willing to oblige you on that. 5 Likes |

Yujin: What is your problem Mr man? why are you hyperventilating on what you know is the truth. The South west has done well for itself, we receive allocations just the way southeast receives theirs, these migrations has it toll on our infrastructure and we are trying to find a solution and barge in here claiming brave and smart as ibos are won't to do. See ehn, what we ll show you people will be child's play compared to boko, we want throw physical bombs but economic bombs that bite. I wonder you all are so obstinate. Your issue is latest and most pressing we have hand now and believe you me the leaders of the SW are working on it albeit underground. For the rest of your life, don't ever barge into a discussion on the way forward for Lagos or the Southwest again. Hope you copy? |

Macelliot:Exactly! He just picks figures to fit into his bigoted reasoning. I criticized him earlier only for him to respond with the census figures of SE states as at 2006 while giving the estimated population of the current Lagos state. Little wonder they so belittle the SE to their chagrin. |

Hypocrisy is when we don't tell ourselves the truth..if the country likes concentrate most money making revenue generating infrastructure and outfits nothing ambode would do to solve the issue |

I personally believe Ambode is overwhelmed with the enormity of the responsibility. He simply does not have what it takes to continue the good work Fashola started, or to run a state as complex as Lagos. |
