The Vice-Chancellor explained that the University gives equal opportunity to all its admission seekers. “There is equal opportunity for all students from every state of the federation and we have been adjudged as the most compliant university by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)”, he said. “Take for example, our admission quota for the medical school is 150. It means we cannot accept more than four students from each state of the federation including the FCT. This is why you have students who meet the cut-off requirements but still don't get admitted”, the Vice-Chancellor explained. Prof. Ambali, however, disclosed that only about 7,800 applicants out of the 65,000 that sat for this year's post-UTME screening of the University would be admitted. He said that the management had complained over this low admission quota to the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) through the National Universities Commission (NUC). "The management of the University had written a letter to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) through the National Universities Commission (NUC) over the matter with a view to looking into it so that the allocation could be increased in subsequent years," he said. Prof. Ambali said that the University expected a higher allocation of admission slots with the present developments in the institution, adding that it now has more facilities, more academic programmes, and more staff. While speaking on the reason for conducting UTME for a total number of 65,000 candidates, knowing full well that the University could only admit 7,800, the Vice-Chancellor said that it was borne out of the quest to have the best students admitted out of the whole lot. Professor Ambali, who said that academic stability is the highest selling point of the university, added that the institution had been able to set sustainable standard that had now been the envy of all universities in the country. The Vice-Chancellor, however, assured Nigerians that students' accommodation on the campus has increased with more private hostels coming up. He also commented on the frosty relationship between the Unilorin Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the national ASUU, saying that the University is working to bridge the gap.
