A member representing Uruan Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Aniekan Bassey, escaped being killed after a team of policemen invaded his house at Ekim Enen, in the Uruan Local Government Area.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the policemen, who were in two patrol vans, allegedly stormed the lawmaker’s family house, claiming to be searching for an undisclosed exhibit on Sunday.

An eyewitness, Iquo Edet, told our correspondent that the lawmaker’s cousin, Mr. Akan Bassey, who rushed out of the bathroom to check what was happening, was shot as soon as he disclosed his name to them.

According to Edet, the policeman who shot Akan, might have mistaken him (Akan) for Aniekan, adding that the bullet pierced through his breastplate.

“I think the policemen came for a mission. What exhibit were they looking for? Who has something here to hide?

“If they had succeeded in killing him, they would either say it was an accidental discharge or look for something incriminating to present before the public who will judge him as criminal since the dead cannot talk,” she said.

Aniekan, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Monday, said he was still in shock over the incident. He described the act as shocking and barbaric.

He said, “I quickly rushed to the crime scene which took place around 2pm on Sunday and helped rush the victim to a hospital.”

Aniekan, who did not reveal the name of the hospital, where the victim was taken, said the doctor gave prompt attention to him. He noted that his cousin was lucky that the bullet did not go through his heart.

Aniekan said he would do everything within his power to ensure that the policemen, who were involved in the act, paid for it.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, Cordelia Nwawe, said the policeman did not aim the gun at anybody, adding that the incident was an accidental discharge.

She said, “Investigation is ongoing at the moment. The injured victim is undergoing treatment; he is responding to treatment. Hopefully, he will be home tomorrow.

“But the accident did not occur out of malice. Parties concerned have never had any problem. It was an accidental discharge.”

She said the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani, had ordered a diligent investigation into the matter.

Why is the Police and DSS hounding Akwa Ibom PDP Governor and Lawmakers.

APC cant win that state for now because Buhari himself is yet to prove why his party deserves their vote with his body language. What Federal Project is he siting there and what are the key appointments into his kitchen cabinet abi na that (messenger to the Senate Ita Enang) that is making him think AK will move to APC over night?

I wonder what our police officers take sometimes, Their manner of behaviour and attitude towards their job is anything short of professionalism.

Nigerian Police and accidental discharge are like 5 and 6...

They only accidentally shoot other people, they never accidentally shoot themselves...

But I still prefer them to the U.S Police.

In 2013, a mobile police man escorting a bank's Bullion van claimed to have accidentally shot a young, promising undergraduate dead @ the post office arena in Ilorin. Can someone pls explain the word "accidental discharge"? The Nigerian police continues to display their high level of unprofessionalism and incompetence. Later Mr SOMEBODY will come and say that our "so-called" friends from the west are sponsoring terrorism, when they fail to sell us arms. I am sure CNN and BBC will soon report this one again to their boss

No one is paying attwntion to armed forces reforms.
I opened a thread on that sometime ago.
Everyone is screaming sai buhari and heaping praises on the president but no one is talking about armed forces reform.
Our army, police, airforce and navy are power drunk, unduly belligerent and truculent in their dealings with civilians.

I know my voice isn't loud but I am appealing to the president to look into armed forces and prison reforms.

Do you know that your chances of getting kidnapped by ritual killers is slimmer than your chances of getting extrajudicial capital punishment from the people we pay to protect us.

Every year, numerous cases of armed forces abuse litter the media yet no one is talking about a reform.
They only protect and serve the rich people who are in favour with the powers that be....

Hmm...d story looks kinda fishy...
Funny story bt I dnt blame d police, d name confused them coz I read he shot akpan thinking its aniekan...
D police force seriously need d wind of CHANGE n special reinforcements or maybe d government need to increase their salary n add special incentives to bring bk those glory days of d police force bk den when they carry their duties wt passion unlike this days that we hear stories of barbaric killings based on frustrations...
On the other hand d press and journalists need to step-up on this their quack reports....d news isn't enough because it can easily b debunked, we need evidences, we need proves Bt not lies n propaganda being being supported wt fake or wrong pix..
Nigeria wud surely rise again if we believe...
That's part of prayer each daY..
Wish d injured quick recovery..
