When I join the auto section in 2009/10, it was vibrant in terms of sales, dealer partnership and transparency.
However ,in the last few months, I think our auto section is dying.
I joined NL to sell cars and learn more about the car business but it seems like serious clients go to olx, cheki and efritin.com.NL is now full of online pricers who probably have 15mb data to burn.I have nothing against speculators but I'm incensed particularly at those who price cars like crayfish in oyingbo market.

My question is how do we get serious paying clients to come to the auto section without investing in heavy dollar ads

Wow. i love your write-up. I feel the same way too. I have been a member for over 6 years now and believe me, in the last two years, i have sold more cars on OLX and Tradestable than i have sold on NL in 5 years.

Scammer ti take over ni! And moderators no dey town anymore.

Generally, I don't take anyone that called from nairaland lately serious. A lot of time waster are subscribed on here.

Don't get me wrong, there are still serious customers on here may like 5%.

Internet and data's are cheap now.

Despite OLX scam adverts, each time I get customers call from OLX they sing me to the bank grin

Why are pple moving to other sites?
1.Nairaland is as disorganized as ladipo market.
I have bought parts from ladipo before (forget that I'm a girl) and it was my friend that has to point out the various sections to me before I could buy anything.
How many newbies have that sort of time to keep burrowing in the message of posts

Why won't the car section be dead ?
Pre-ordering a car from here is now a confirm mugu's game.
Place is filled with a lot of loud-mouthed confidence men shouting "send me dollars, I will deliver in 4 weeks, then pay the balance.."
Sounds sweet but in reality...

As for crayfish pricing, some dealers are just greedy and living in Fantasy island - like the OP.

Agreed, the naira isn't worth much these days but price gouging isn't the way to have a steady stream of buyers.
Again, car dealing isn't for everybody. Most people get into it because they think its easy money but in an economy like ours every seller needs to find a balance.

Noticed that the ad pricing has remained static for almost two months due to low volume of traffic

You mean NL Auto Section? grin No pun intended, my addiction is what keep me hanging here. The best way to sell Cars these days are through middle-men, mechanics, bbm contacts, friends, and families. Although, they sliced both dealer and buyer's throat asking for a commission, but it's always a sure deal.

I doff my hat for you brother!!

If the section is bad....then its the dealers we should blame. Dealers like the Op Dollz.
She said that people price cars like crayfish from Oyingbo. Just imagine the Arrogance?

You want to sell a car and I should not price? And why won't I price a car and know what it costs before leaving my place to come check the car out?

So u think I will waste my time and energy to come and inspect your car, then I like it and you tell me some bullshit price after wasting all my time?

Forget all that nonsense you just said Dollz, reasonable people will price and know what their budget is before setting out.
Do you expect anyone to come and be viewing a car that they can't afford?
When they come and see the car and then they can't afford the price in the long run of what good is that?

In all sincerity I find the auto dealers on Nairaland very arrogant and full of themselves.
They behave as if they are doing their prospective clients a favor.

They won't answer any questions from clients, and later just like this Op they will call it "Crayfish Pricing". Just imagine?

1. Check out the post of dealers here, maybe two pictures only, picture of the tyres alone and the back seat. And when u ask them for more pictures they say, call or come for inspection.

Won't you know the value of what u want before spending money to go and see the "junk" car they have for sale?
Or u think everyone stays in Lagos like most dealers?

2. She said people on Olx are more forthcoming, well since OLX doesn't have space to interact with sellers except to make calls, they may be calling but how many people believe in OLX and its credibility?

3. Olanshi, u sef dey open mouth for here....I laugh at you.
All your cars are over priced and out of range from the "average market price" and u want people to buy from you?
Guy, go and learn that to sell a car, you don't want to put all your gains in just one deal.
When a Nairaland dealer will want to gain 300k on just one ride? Who will come and buy from you?

4. Finally, i will advice you dealers to always make sure u post detailed pictures of cars u want to sell. Full engine pix, front pictures, both sides, rear view, dashboard, front seats and back seats....that's a total of 7 pictures.
Is that too hard to do?

5.
And all these yeye believe that a serious buyer will call you is nothing but a fallacy!!
I have helped a lot of friends and Family source cars here on Nairaland successfully.
I will see a good car and the moment you refuse to put a price I won't call you.!!!
Why do u want to sell a car and don't want people to know the car price? Na free?

And then when we ask the Dealers questions, all they will keep saying is "Available", " Going ".
Going to where? Nonsense people.

If u dealers stop being arrogant and silly maybe more people will be buying cars from y'all.

To be fair, it became FAR more annoying when this site became overrun with extremely greedy, unethical dealers.
What we get now is resellers annoying potential buyers with insane markups, and dealers refusing to post prices publicly for discussion.

A long time ago, it was the norm to post prices, high quality photos AND the VIN number of vehicles so buyers could do their own homework. Now even to post pricing information is a struggle.

Take a look at your own posts. You have an ancient 2003 Corolla up for sale...Nigerian used, 110k + mileage and you're listing it up for 1.1 million, why will buyers not call to price at hundreds of thousands of Naira below your list price, since that is the going rate in the open market?

That's what I find really surprising too.

They refuse to put price and want people to call for it.

That's ridiculous really.

I think most of these self acclaimed dealers are mere resellers who just want to make abnormal profit than even the original owner of the vehicle. How can i buy a car for 1.5 million when i can source it nearby for less than 1.2 million

Jasper abi wetin be ur moniker, Olanshi offers one of the best prices and cars here on nairaland. I'm very much experienced than you can ever imagined and my client satisfaction is my priority.

I'm not that kinda fellow that just wanna sell a car, but someone that keeps relationship with my clients and there colleagues by offering them top-notch ride.

Ofcourse, I don't compromise my standard and never will I. If you can't afford a clean title car like the ones I offer, you can settle for the ones that are substandard. It's your choice! Part of the reasons most of you fall for scam!

My cars are not for everyone but for the right person. Soup wey sweet Na Money Kill ham!

I'm a businessman that takes to details and my client knows me for that, and that's why they stick to us when they need top-notch whips!

I don't know what you mean by arrogant and silly dealers, did any dealer here forcefully deep hands in your pocket before?

So, keep laughing at yourself.

I can tell you that profit margins sometimes are not up to N200K on some cars!

If you sell accidented cars, If you are lucky you could make a bit more but a lot of client want accident free cars.

When you quote prices for accident free cars, they will open teeth that it is exorbitant. Like it was a free gift from the country it was imported.

Please calculate the current exchange rate Naira to dollars! Compare to the former exchange rate when it was N150 to $1.

Buying, trucking, Tax, Shipping, BOL (DHL) Custom Clearing and other expenses!

I'm not here to analyze anything to anybody. The right customers will come for the right car.

I give it to you Mr Elshanautos, really your cars and adverts make more sense than most others here.

So for the benefit of doubt I just went over to OLX for the first time to check out their car section.

My Observation:
The cars posted there are much cheaper and realistic than the ones here on Nairaland!!
I do not believe it's the Shylock dealers we have here that still post there.
Most of the sellers are the direct owners.
That's where the price difference comes in.

And I noticed every car had a price!!

So who is to blame here? When you all will keep saying "available" instead of putting simple necessary information.
Don't blame Nairaland, blame yourself for that!

To each dealer his own.
If you over price your car and you don't get buyers then its your fault.
Nobody forces anybody to buy anything but the moment you come and start complaining of low patronage then that's your own cup of tea, not the buyers'.

My cars are not over priced and am not complaining of low patronage to you and to fellow nairalanders.

The level of serious customers here are just within 5/10% others are just time wasters, scammers and window shoppers.

I have cut a lot of deals off nairaland, I don't complain. I run my deals come rain, come sunshine.

Nairaland is still part of the forum I visit often.

Thanks to @Dollz for bringing up this issue and kudos to @kayjasper for the obvious elephant in the room with respect to all the candid dealers! The main issue is NL auto section isn't sure if it wants to be a "talk-shop or shop-shop" because people will always comment if there's an avenue unlike on the dreaded OLX or Autotrader. Seun & his merry IT gurus can resolve unnecessary "chit-chat & bump" by redesigning the auto section akin to Autotrader so dealers must post in same car/vehicle groups (with pics, price, etc) and buyers view & call for more info, no long story! It's becoming tedious as one has to "scroll & scroll & scroll" till page 27 or 52 just to find what they want without price & pics to the angst of @kayjasper et al! Although this may halve the popularity of some dealers it will improve the quality of posts as if u don't include photos, price, contact, location, etc ur post won't get displayed & if u don't want to "bump" everyday ur post can be on the first pages @a small fee to Seun ofcos and i get my consultancy fee! I'm not guilty of any of these, and have only gotten one buyer via nairaland in the past month, Whereas Olx has smiled me to the bank (as Olanshi said grin ) more in recent times. Why is that so?
Dollz does have a valid point still..
But as Calculus said, most cars get sold via referrals (friends, family, customers, mechanics, etc)

Yes you are. I have followed most cars you post here and they are way too expensive and always above the 'average market price'.

Same goes with another dealer called Chibecan. For all our sakes, the economy is not in good shape. Always remember that you cannot make a killing with one deal. Be considerate and sales will come your way.

I think most of these self acclaimed dealers are mere resellers who just want to make abnormal profit than even the original owner of the vehicle. How can i buy a car for 1.5 million when i can source it nearby for less than 1.2 million

Yeah, you're right.

So, keep laughing at yourself.

....of course , there is no better example of the much talked about arrogance from dealers than what this dude just spilled. ...sheer arrogance to put it mildly.

Nairaland is still part of the forum I visit often.

..... dude you are really arrogant.
