dearpreye: To be candid, any job is a job as long as it can bring in money. Since I left school, I haven't had luck with getting a job but that didn't stop me from earning six figures with skills I taught myself. Now, just a few weeks ago, I learned from a certain Nairalander that people are making a killing with web and app development. I have since started reshaping my mind to accept new skills in that area. I will be learning HTML, HTML5, CSS, CSS3, PHP, JAVA, JAVAScript, Python, Ruby On Rail. Why? I taught myself website design and I want to go deeper so I can be in control. Since I read rich dad, poor dad years ago, I haven't really feared being without a job. There is also nothing I don't know about doing business on the internet: Internet Marketing, Content Marketing, SEO, Affiliate marketing, List Building, Selling On The web with stories, Cold Calling, Freelancing, Domain selling , Blogging, Importation etc. All this I taught myself. The whole industry has changed over the years and outsourcing is also collapsing it. Big corp are willing to pay you to write simple codes and app for them. I saw 2 companies yesterday that is willing to 55-60k dollars if you have coding skills and I found them while researching. This further reinforced my desire to learn coding because I have always loved working with my PC and I want to be in control! 6 Likes 1 Share |

This is a very interesting topic and i commend the writer for bringing up this topic.Gone are those days when going to school to acquire a certificate was a guarantee for success. You need a skill set to put money in your pocket and food on your table these days. I will use my case as a practical illustration. After my secondary school days, I enrolled as an apprentice furniture maker (Carpenter ). I learnt this for three years and went ahead to work with a construction company for about fours years. I later decided to further my education and got admitted to study accounting. I never lacked money through out my university days on campus because of the skill set I had. There were always jobs for me to do either for my fellow students or at construction sites. Today, I'm a fellow member (FCA) of the prestigious Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and have my own flourishing business. I have also completed my Masters Degree and obtained a P.hd degree in United States. I still have my tools handy by the way! Skill acquisition have a way of increasing ones IQ as well. I will advise that people should take interest in skill acquisition while still pursuing their dreams in education. It will go a long way in making you a better person and less dependent on people. 11 Likes 3 Shares |

Did I hear you say an old plumber is in search of apprentice, he may eventually not see any? They request from you what U can't afford just to learn and serve them... In the old times apprenticeship is free, at the time you are to gain freedom the boss can then make a request or you voluntarily show appreciation 2 Likes |

This is exactly what the NYSC is meant to achieve rather than the present waste of time. They need to restructure that scheme because if youths are equipped with practical skills in fashion designing, automobile repair, painting, carpentry, welding, photography etc they will be empowered to ensure they are gainfully employed. Even when employed they strive to setup gainful employment for others. Therein lies the revolution we so crave in our economy. 1 Like 1 Share |

Formal education will earn you a cheque or salary; self education will earn you a fortune. With just 36k you too can turn your destiny around. When you say enough is enough, and you follow it up, then you are on your way to greatness. Let's take AIM Global to the next level. We are just 3 yrs old in Nigeria. The opportunity is still very much open. Remember Self education will earn you a fortune 1 Like 1 Share |

A guy in my department makes thousands of naira each semester from teaching furniture making in entrepreneurship development classes. The EED center employed him as one of there resources persons. I really admire his hardworking nature. The need for skill acquisition is one that has to be taken serious in our society today. Mine has really helped me in school and i look forward to learn more. 1 Like 1 Share |

@OP! You have made some good points as usual. However, believe you me, you have over flogged this "skill acquisition" propagation, you have misrepresented what our dear country and its citizenry truly need to curb unemployment and poverty nay progress. Kindly start preaching Mastery of an Art (proper education in any specialized field of life endeavor) instead of just Skill acquisition ( which has more to do with nurturing inherent knowledge that has more to do with physical body). While the latter is just a subsidiary, the former is the parent of the two. As you may be aware of, there are four major types of learning, viz: Visual, Auditory, Reading- or writing, Kinesthetic. Therefore, it's not everybody that can cope with the learning process of skill acquisition (kinesthedic learning). We should encourage people to acquire thorough and comprehensive knowledge in any life art of their choice through any of the learning process they deem fit. Education can be gained through either formal or informal ways. In the same vain, we should discourage people from "crowd following mentality", that Mr. A I know is in a particular line of art doing well in it doesn't mean that I will succeed if I take on the same route ( imitating is dishonest way of replicating something and it's legal but duplicating is an offense against the law),so in my right sense it will be foolhardy of me to follow Mr. A life route just because he is a success in what he does. In our individual capacities, we should strive to create our own life paths and encrypt it. People should know that there's a great difference between been a master's degree holder in a particular art and having mastery of art in the same art. For instance, the fact that Mr. Y hold a master's degree in business administration doesn't automatically make him a master of the art of business administration. Only someone with a comprehensive knowledge about business administration should lay claim of mastery of the art of business administration irrespective of how and where (the learning process and kind of school gained the education) the person learn and mastered the art of business administration. Yes, you heard me right, MASTERY OF AN ART is the key to our liberation. Example, until our formally educated engineers and technologists starts to live up to their expectations then I will begin to agree that they are superior to their informally educated counterparts like the bricklayers and roadside mechanics. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Most of them earn about 200k and above and can barely spell their names correctly while we can spell our names with fat certificates but nothing to show for. We dey carry graduate for head. certificate won't and can't fetch you money. If it were by certificate, the first class graduates won't be roaming on the streets looking for jobs. I know of a guy that made first class but chose not to work for anybody, he has his own tutorial school where he makes cool cash. 1 Like 1 Share |

I tried learning a skill, been there for a year and half and then my boss starts been tribalistic and any little mistake you would here him say "omo Igbo" I actually took a go at him and told him I don't like been called that way which he took personal, since then any slight mistake he wants to chase me away which he has finally done, tried hitting me and I blocked myself from his angry blows, which made him tag me as disrespectful, I told my mum she went to confront him and he said the same disrespect issh stuffs and he would only accept me if I come prostrate b4 him. I am really confused right now and don't know what to do the only thing am certain of is that tribe also matters and ma Yoruba bros pls translate "omo Igbo o kin ni aseyori" don't know if I spelled it correctly. thanks in advance. 2 Likes 1 Share |
