Everyone in this world got accent.
Igbo's : Rice = Lice
Yoruba : House = Ouse
Hausa : Fifty = Pipty

Southern United States of America ( Georgia) Baseball = Baseball
Northern United States of America : semi-automatic = Semai- automatic.

So, don't worry about your accent.
Someone from New York can't hear & understand what someone from deep south (Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi) is saying.
You can go listen to Rich Homie Quan or. Future's songs, You can't hear a single word.

I doubt you're telling the truth. How come you're able to know you mistake one word for another when you claim your friends don't draw your attention to the mistakes? Those whom I know that have that problem don't notice it. To them, they're saying the right thing but found themselves in such a situation because of their ethnic group. For example some Hause people mistake "p" for "b" vice vice versa. For some Yoruba, they mistake "f" for "v" vice versa. For some Igbo, they mistake "l" for "r" vice versa. These people hardly anything wrong in their speeches, if at all they notice it.

I have problem differentiating the v and f sounds in some words too... Like pronouncing fan for van and vice versa, but I tell you what..... I dont care. Though I found my way out by making conscious efforts to pronounce the words well when I speak. Just practise more, it's nothing serious to me. You're not alone. smiley

Folks from non-speaking countries don't seem to grap these minor differences. Make use of English dictionary to distinguish the meanings and differences of each. Read English novels, journal to help yourself. Don't ignore English TV programs. All these will help you.

Don't feel bad. Just learn 10 words each starting with F and V. Master them and think before you call them.

I have an accent that has been discouraging me to the extent that i'm too shy to speak in the public.

For instance,"light and night" sound alike to me, I mean i can't differentiate them perfectly, but whenever I converse with my friends or put those aforementioned words in sentences, they (my friends) do not correct me...But I always doubt if I had pronounced them correctly.

Other words I have problem in differentiating are: snap/slap, lame/name. Though no one has corrected me on these.

So the main issue here is "IS THERE MUCH DIFFERENCE IN THEIR SOUNDS?
Pls be honest!!
Everybody has an accent. You can work on your diction so that people will understand you easily. Get videos on youtube and practice regularly.

Ok there's much difference
I don't think you have a problem here since you've been able to identify them

You should spend more time trying to pronounce those letters eg...N and L
From there proceed to words that begins with them....then start using them in sentences

Is there really much difference?
Try pronouncing both letters and see that your tongue will be touching your hard palate almost in the same fashion.

@bossto
The first thing you will need to learn is how to properly pronounce the two letters, and the difference between them, in the art of pronouncing them.

In pronouncing 'L', your tongue touches the hard palate of your mouth, while you gradually expel air through the sides of the tongue and mouth. In doing this, you can pinch your nose and still be able to pronounce it comfortably.

However, in pronouncing 'N', your tongue not only touches your hard palate but blocks the release of air through your mouth. You thus gradually expel air through your nose while your tongue is resting on your palate. If you pinch your nose, you won't be able to pronounce it at all.

Practice with this illustration until you learn to pronounce the 2 letters, then you can start trying out words.

Good luck.

@Op...here in lies the solution to ur problem. Let me also add that u have to learn how to speak like Pete Edochie, Olu Jacobs, learn to pick ur words one after the other and slowly too when u speak, especially when u get to those words u find difficult to pronounce.

Goodluck
