Pauluche:Even if NUC alters it to 10.00, how does that affect his own grading system. Its is the grading system that was used in my time that will be applicable in converting my grades to the German grading system. For instance, on my transcript, all the grading systems that my school have ever used with the corresponding years when it was applicable are all explained on the transcript. The only sthing the school needs to do is to check the applicable year where mine falls under. My school once used the 4.0 system at a point and changed later. oduzbaba2015:Uni assist will use what is available or explained by your school on your transcript. Transcripts comes with the explanations of the grading system used in grading you. Capiche! 1 Like |

victz: Know it that the cost of housing is generally expensive in Europe and not only in Germany. As at 2011,I was paying 250 pounds per month on a shared accommodation in Preston, United Kingdom. Just that you know, that was about one of the cheapest one could come across then. However, once you start working, accommodation wouldn't be that difficult to pay for. |

ogagaejay: Well you're saying this from your own perspective I guess. The fact that schools decide to maintain their grading system doesn't change the nationally accepted standard. Other countries will judge degrees from Nigeria based on the benchmark set by the regulatory body in the country and not by the benchmark of individual universities. It remains to be seen how other countries will judge degrees from Nigeria as soon as the policy comes into effect (those results which will be computed based on the new benchmark). I believe the guy should contact the school and ask what criteria/scale was used in determining the German grade they gave to him (whether 5.or 4.0). |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 7:27pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Eke40seven: You're right in a way Sir Eke. That was why I said the guy should confirm from the school. I believe you know that despite there's a national grading system in Germany, some schools will tell you that their conversion system may be different from others. |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by kilo4sure: 7:32pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Pauluche:The problem with this is that even if the scale is 4.0, then it means the maximum grade would be 4.0, but the school still used 5.0 for dat guy from what I've calculated now to leave him at 2.7. I'll like to plead those who are now applying to uniassist to check if they used 2.0 as the minimum grade for dem or the 1.0 |

Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by ogagaejay: 8:05pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Pauluche: Lol, this news is confusing to allot of people. I will explain by using a typical nigerian uni that operates a 5.0 scale ambrose Ali uni. Previous method 4.5-5.0. First class 3.5-4.49. Second class upper 2.5-3.49 second class lower 1.5-2.49 third class 1.0-1.49 pass Minimum grading unit is 1.0 New system 4.5-5.0 first class 3.5-4.49. Second class upper 2.5-3.49 second class lower 1.0-2.49 third class Minimum grading unit is still 1.0 |

Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Eke40seven(m): 8:57pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Pauluche:I don't agree with you totally, Nigerian universities do not necessarily have a uniform grading system for all schools, so schools would rather look at your university's grading system and not what a national regulatory body quoted, to judge you. Even schools in Germany don't have a single grading system, there are others with an entirely different system, although a particular grading system might be more common, but that doesn't mean all institutions follow it. That is why schools have a separate section explaining their grading system. Check schools in the UK, University of Glasgow have a different grading system from University of Manchester. You can't for that reason use the more common 1-5 point cumulative system to convert grades for students from that school. |

ogagaejay: Bros Na AAU u con take judge mata? I think u have to contact someone der wen the new session commences cuz ur making an assumption. Mind u I am also an Alumnus of AAU and Still have STRONG ties with the school till date. U are NOT right in the sense that GRADE E has been ELIMINATED Bros. 40% is no longer the pass mark 45% is the pass mark now and that's termed a D. @ Bros Eke the forgoing sums up my point pls. So long as the pass mark per course has been changed, everything else changes. Mind you NUC is against the 7pt scale used by UI..... I rest my case Sir Please if you have any doubt click on this link: www.persecondnews.com/index.php/component/k2/item/4515-nuc-to-abolish-pass-grade-degrees-in-universities-okojie |

Pauluche: I can't see where I made reference to the bonded in my quote. Meanwhile, I was trying to explain what NUC Meant by the news. Anyhow, I want you to know 1.0 is still the minimum grading in a 5.0 scale. Also, Pass is the E grade. Mind you this took effect from 2013/2014 session, so I don't need to contact anyone Ich sage, meine letzte Abschied zu diesem Thema |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by number13: 9:28pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Just 4 parameters are required to convert GPAs in between 2 grading systems: the points for minimum pass marks and the maximum obtainable points. The values of the marks and the point scales are irrelevant. |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 9:33pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
ogagaejay: Again you've gotten it wrong Sir....A change in scaling system implies a change in grading system. PLEASE THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR THE AWARD OF THIRD CLASS DEGREE IS NOT 1.0 IT IS 1.5 please visit the AAU website to read for yourself https://www.aauekpoma.edu.ng/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=237%3Aabolition-of-pass-degrees-in-nigerian-universities&catid=53&Itemid=225 |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 9:40pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
number13: Thank you Sir! And that's what has changed in its entirety here. Both minimum and maximum pass marks and obtainable points in this case which happens to be 45% D - 100% A and 1.5 THIRD CLASS to 5.0 FIRST CLASS. So you see the importance of decimal place here. It can significantly affect one's grade when converted to the German scale. I've got nothing to lose on this just saying this for the sake of those who got admitted from 2013/2014 session till date who may be viewing this thread. Wake up brothers and sisters things have changed! |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by ogagaejay: 9:46pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Pauluche: That seems correct, 1.5 for AAU minimum grading unit for 2013/2014. Then you should agree, that there is no one system and what is written in your transcript is what is applicable not the 4.0 as you earlier earlier said. |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 9:50pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
ogagaejay: Well I agree I said 4.0 but technically speaking it is now 4.5 AND NOT 5.0.... This changes A WHOLE LOT OF THINGS when it comes to conversion to the German scale. Mind you Sire its not only applicable to AAU it is the new NUC standard which took effect from 2013/2014 upwards. We have to create this awareness for those in school who are viewing this thread or who will one day view this thread. The have got to be serious with their books... |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by ogagaejay: 9:53pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
Pauluche: That is where u are wrong, I just looked at that for another sch, it was not 1.5, they retained the 1.0 . U were right about AAU, What I understand is that schools can shift the system as they wish, I remember a year in my school 2.2 was 2.49 another year it was 2.5. Another year first class was awarded to a student with 3.45. The only important thing about the NUC News is the pass degree that is no longer awarded. Unassist.ev will do the calculation with what is written on your transcript as minimum cgpa |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 9:58pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
ogagaejay: You still don't get it do you? It's a NEW DIRECTIVE which schools are gradually adjusting to. You don't expect each school to just adjust at once do you? Now if this issue is not treated what happens to those who's system has been changed and they still erroneously believe its 1.0-5.0? Sir truth is by the time NUC begins to inspect schools they will comply. Like I said it's a new directive that will require time for schools to adjust |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Pauluche: 10:08pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ALL FRESH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS Before i proceed, to dispel any ambiguity, these two issues are only going to affect students that will register for the 2013/2014 academic session onwards . The students can either be UTME(100 level) or DE(200 level). 1. NO E (44-40) IN GRADING Initially, we all know that: 100-70 is A, 69-60 is B, 59-50 is C, 49-45 is D, 44-40 is E, 40-0 is F. Well, the grading system has changed as such, from 2013/2014 academic session onwards, from 44-0 will be F!!! ie no more E Please note that though this affects 200 level DE students that gained admission in 2013/2014 academic session, it does not affect the 200 level students they will meet (the ones that were admitted in 2012/2013 academic session and did 100 level) 2. NO PASS DEGREE There used to be a class of degree called the "Pass Degree"(with CGPA 1.5 downwards). This has also been scrapped off the board as can be seen by the statement issued by NUC below: "The National Universities Commission (NUC) has abolished the award of pass degrees in Nigerian Universities. In a release signed by the Ag. Director, Academic standards, Mrs Florence Asemadahun addressed to Vice-chancellors of various Universities, the NUC stated that the classification of degrees in the Nigerian Universities terminates at third class. The classification is as follows: First class division (100 - 70 with 5.00 - 4.50 as CGPA) Second class Upper division (69 - 60 with 4.49 - 3.50 CGPA) Second class lower division (49 - 50 with 3.49 - 2.40 CGPA) Third class division (49 - 45 with 2.39 - 1.50 CGPA). It follows therefore, that third Class is the least class of degree in the Nigerian Universities." CONCLUSION FOR 1 ABOVE: No more hanging by the thread as statistic of results in most universities show E (44 - 40) running away with almost 43% of the votes. FOR 2 ABOVE: Once you graduate with a CGPA below 1.5, you will by then have officially wasted all the years and resources you spent in school. Also; i. 0.5 - below is now the threshold for "To withdraw from the University" instead of 0.3 ii. 1.0 - below is "Sessional Probation" which if not improved in one (1) academic session, will lead to "withdraw from course" aka change of department and demotion to 100 level. Got this from a students group I belong on Facebook. It was written some time ago from a direct circular issued to all schools Mind you just have to the it that it will take time for school to adjust 1 Like |

Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Eke40seven(m): 10:42pm On Sep 26, 2015 |
@ pauluche, "Please note that though this affects 200 level DE students that gained admission in 2013/2014 academic session, it does not affect the 200 level students they will meet (the ones that were admitted in 2012/2013 academic session and did 100 level)" The quote above from your own link sums up all I have been saying, for old students, who used the 1.00-5.00 CGPA system, their grade conversion will be made based on that irrespective of the new system. And such will be provided in the trabscript. 3.5 from Unilag, in 1985 is not the same with 3.5 today. So on the transcripts different grading systems were listed for the grading authority to take the appropriate one applicable to the student. Your conversion will be done based on the one used in your time in school. As far as I know this law is relatively new and shouldn't affect someone who graduated this year. That's surely a wrong evaluation. For other argument, I don't really get it..I guess we should just watch how things pan out. |
