Following the highlighted CBN cashless policy will give Idea of frontline Nigerian cities. THE IMPACT OF THE CASHLESS POLICY ON ECONOMIC GROWTH OF NIGERIA
The introduction of electronic banking, online transactions and mobile banking in Nigeria has paved way for a new era of development where the use and demand for physical cash is gradually declining. These recent evolution of technology in the Nigerian financial institutions posses interesting questions for economist, financial institutions, business analyst and the government regarding the current economical status, logistics, and availability of instruments to guarantee economic growth and stability, efficiency and effectiveness of the cashless policy.
Since the inception of humanity, various payment methods have been used to purchase goods and services starting with the trade by barter. The trade by barter method of transaction has been the foundation for the introduction of money and coins to solve the problem of double coincidence of wants and divisibility faced by trade by barter. The use of money/coins was introduced after the use of trade by barter method, and it has solved various challenges associated with trade by barter, but the use of money as an exchange medium has its own challenges and dis-advantages and can still be replaced with a better payment system-the cashless policy/banking.
Various advantages enjoyed by more developed nations such as the US has prompted the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to adopt the cashless policy. At the end of the 1980s the use of cash for purchasing consumption goods in the US has constantly dropped with inflation (Humphrey, 2004). Nigeria’s aim to be among the biggest economy by 2020 has driven her to gradually move from a pure cash economy to a cashless policy.
Since Nigeria gained her independence in1960, there have been different constitutional reforms, change in economic and banking policies mainly aimed at stabilizing the economy, enhancing social welfare and enhancing economic growth and development. In view of being one of the best and biggest economies in 2020, the CBN has started implementing the cashless policy/banking in some major states/cities in Nigeria such as Lagos, Kano, Port-Harcourt and Onitsha.
The CBN and Pro cashless policy activists have asserted reduction in crime rates, minimized risk associated with carrying huge sums of money, reduction in political corruption, reduction in banking cost, improvement on monetary policy in management of inflation and the overall growth and development of the economy of Nigeria as advantages associated with the implementation of the cashless policy. http://nairaproject.com/m/projects/704.html 3 Likes |

wiseoneking: you are absolutely right. Lagos is a metropolitant city. If we go by that we may come up with at least two viable city in lagos: ikeja and vi/ikoyi ie lagos Island. I dont think there is any far more than these two places in Lagos state. Remove this two, lagos will just be like any state. I have said it before, Abeokuta, owerri and co are not actually economically viable, not even the big city of ibadan or Enugu. This places are domain of civil servants and where people enjoy their money and retirement. That does not mean they are not great cities in their own respect. In your eyes you have written something sensible? Lagos is a city and it was the former capital of Nigeria. It comprises Lagos Island,Victoria Island,IkoyiTinCan Island Apapa,Surulere and Yaba ,Otto,Ijora and Iganmu. Ask the indigenes they will educate you. Lagos State was created in 1968 but the City of Lagos existed before that under a Federal Minister one of whom was the Late President Yar'adua's father. It was known as Municipality of Lagos Formally. Prior to this places like Mushin ,Ikeja Ikorodu Epe and Badagry were in the WESTERN REGION Afterwards the Municipality remained under the Federal Government and this is indicated in the Supreme Court , State House and other Federal buildings in the City Lagos is the Home of the Stock Exchange and several banks and several key markets, Balogun and Oke Arin e.g It hosts the most important seaports i the country 2 Likes 1 Share |

Lagos tops IGR report
Last Updated: 12 February 2015|16:00 GMT Lagos is the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. PHOTO: Getty images
In the report which was signed by Statistician General, Yemi Kale in collaboration with the Joint Tax Board, Lagos State generated 185.541 billion naira in 2010, 202.761 billion naira in 2011 and 219.202 billion naira in 2012 making it the state with the highest internally generated revenue(IGR).
“First of all, we see patterns. Lagos stands out from the rest of the country, totally in a class of its own. Two, the south is totally different from the north and generally the economies in the north evidently lag behind,” Opeyemi Agbaje, CEO of RTC Advisory Services told CNBC Africa.
According to Agbaje, the data showed the impact of the major population and commercial centres especially in Southern Nigeria.
“So we see that the top seven or eight states are Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Enugu, and Cross River. Relatively, the South West stands out even from the rest of the South region. All of these give you a sense around the state of economic development in the regions,” he added.
Rivers State came in behind Lagos state with 173.047 billion naira and a breakdown showed that the state generated 49.585 billion naira in 2010, 57.187 billion naira in 2011 and 66.275 billion naira in 2012.
Delta ranked third with the most IGR, the data revealed that 26.087 billion naira was collected in 2010, 34.750 billion naira in 2011 and 45.566 billion naira in 2012.
“It also reflects the social statistics in terms of education, entrepreneurial activities, the development of businesses, the development of commerce and industries across those regions.”
Nonetheless, most states in the North reported very low IGR’s and Agbaje believes that the social systems in that region are faulty, especially the educational system.
“You can’t build entrepreneurial activity if your people are not educated. You can’t build small businesses, IT businesses, small shops and supermarkets, based on an illiterate population. Principally, the major element for me is, dealing with education,” he explained.
While Sokoto state collected the least IGR of 3.888 biliion naira because the state’s IGR for 2011 and 2012 could not be computed, Yobe State’s IGR declined from 5.960 billion naira in 2010 to 1.785 billion naira in 2012.
“On the part of the Government, it probably reflects the state of the investment climate across regions. So government, have they created infrastructure, have they created incentives, have they created laws, have they created security? All of those things are what would want to make investors invest in the region,” he said. Are you OK, we are talking about economically viable you posting IGR, very soon now you will post how Osun state have the highest IGR while hunger dey kill dem there 9 Likes |

Lagos state is divided into cities
Victoria island is a city.
Lagos island is a city Ikorodu is a city. Ikeja is a city Lol Victoria island is not a City. Victoria Island is an Island. Read it's history. It was merged with Lagos state back in the 1950s. Same with Lagos Island..lol Ikorodu is a town. Lagos is a state based on the system of Government but in economics. It's a City/Metropolis 4 Likes |

Economic viable state are not measured by IGR but the quatum of both small and medium scale activities carried by private sector. It is a private sector driven economy not a state or govt driven. To be candid with you the city that is the most viable economically is Aba. Nnewi comes next. These are places where individuals are engaged in one small and medium scale biz. Remeber YOUR POST IS TALKING OF STATE IGR and the post here is talking about cities not state. You mentioned akwaibom, delta, cross river's high igr, does it now means tha uyo, asaba, calabar as cities are economically viable? NO. But look at Anambra state, even not been among the 7 states you mentioned has 2 great economical viable cities of Onisha and Nnewi. That is the reason why this state is the most stable state in naija: debt free, yearly increasing of workers salary when others are cutting down etc. It is igr, it is beyond that. 8 Likes |

Ogun, Ikeja top manufacturers’ investment destinations in 2014
While Ogun, which is now Nigeria’s industrial hub, recorded N377 billion worth of investments within the period, Ikeja returned investments worth N39.86 billion.
Ogun State’s represents 78 percent of N483 billion worth of investments made in the whole of the manufacturing sector within the period under review, while Ikeja shares 8.3 percent.
“This has revealed that the majority of manufacturing investments were directed towards Ogun industrial axis, which consists of Otta, Agbara, Ibafo/Mowe and Shagamu industrial areas,” said MAN, in its latest January to July 2014 economic review.
....
The data further show investments in Kano/Sharada/Challawa as N19.75 billion and those of Oyo/Ondo/Osun/Ekiti as N19.2 billion within the period under review.
Anambra/Enugu that had N5.5 billion worth of investments. while those of Imo/Abia were estimated at N309 million.
