Guy, your question is rather funny. Someone said 3 big companies are opening up in Edo State. I asked for proof. Instead of letting that person respond to my enquiry, you have butted in with a question that is totally unrelated to the previous enquiry that was made. undecided

What exactly is your point?? shocked

My bad. I had reasoned that you were down on Oshiomole for not creating companies to employ Edo people . That is not his job.

3 new companies, ke?? Where dem dey? Oya, post pictures of each of these sites, highlight current on-going works at each stage, so that we can read, inspect and verify progress of works, at each location. sad

Your rhetoric is rather baffling! Even last year, the Azura Power Plant site which was done with a lot of fanfare, whose siting in Edo had nothing to do with Oshiomhole, is yet to kick off till now. There are too many promises, and too little action! undecided
I don't imagine facts, it is unfortunate if you don't know the industries in your state. I hope you will not be surprised if I reveal to that apart from the Edo cement factory which was revitalized and concessioned to BUA group for management, BUA group also built a separate cement factory, both in Okpella. The gas pipeline leading to the ongoing fertilizer company around Agenebode axis, by Dangote are being laid. My community is already enjoying some of the multiplying effects of such projects. For instance, houses, like flats that were hitherto given free to tenants are being rented by workers of these companies for as her as 150 and 200k per annum for our dads, mums and youths who are landlords. Also, Some of our youths are currently being engaged as workers, artisans and guards, some on a salary of 50k and above. Too long to continue.

I am not an Edo man, so please do NOT reach for the tribalistic handle. angry

I have friends and relatives that simply live there, who can easily verify these claims. You stated that Edo Cement was sold to BUA, but your recent comments present a different picture from your previous post. Instead of letting people know that BUA upgraded and extended the existing facilities at the old Edo/Bendel Cement Company in Okpella, you made it seem as if BUA was setting up a totally different company, altogether!

As for the fertiliser company Dangote is setting up, don't worry people shall inspect and verify your claims as that project has been on-going since 2012. Now, which one is the 3rd company??

If I see some of you making 'blind' statements, I laugh. You said apart from a few roads, what did he do? Bros, in as much as I am not holding brief for Oshiomole and certainly not in support of his recent loquacious manner, I will score him high in road construction, health ( How has he improved health in Edo State, he has been building central hospital for the past 8 years any yet nothing to show, education ( how did he improve education, the pry sch he rebuilt was funded by federal govt, he increasd the fees of AAU by over 300%, no single infrastructure in AAU during his time, so which Education are you talking about), youth empowerment (You know the YES scheme has failed, all the workers have been sacked), killing of the hitherto institutionalized godfatherism ( I agree with you on this), higher internal revenue ( What has he done with the higher Revenue, this has not made Edo better ,most roads in Edo is usually flooded when it rains, no employment for 8 years), opening up linking of many villages, which no government had paid attention to the past, etc. Bros if you know Benin, you will agree with me that Benin is saner, organized and neater now. King square or ring road axis used to be a no go area for people because of a certain Bob Izua, whose boys were law to themselves in Beninbut Oshiomole cut him and his nefarious activities to size ( when I read this part i immediately realize you are not from benin. Have you heard of a certain Tony Kabaka the younger brother of Bob Izua, he is now in charge of Ring road and terrorizing everyone. Bob izua is a learner where he is ). Right now, no fewer than 3 new big companies are currently being built in Edo state, including Dangote fertilizer company and BUA cement factory ( can you show us any proof of this). I know Oshiomole is not a saint, but we should always avoid to dodge the truth just because you want to settle scores.
( Oshiomole recieved higher IGR and Federal Allocation than lucky igbinedion and nothing to show for it. he built a few roads and that's all. is that what we should celebrate him for, no employment 8yrs, central hospital not completed for eight years yet with Less Revenue Igbinedion built Stella Obasanjo Children Hospital.

Edo to cultivate 300,000 hectares of farmland by 2016
Published On: Wed, Jan 8th, 2014 | Agricultural Business | By IDRIS UMAR MOMOH

In consistent with its commitment to generate sustainable employment and boost domestic commercial agriculture, Edo State government has proposed to cultivate over 300,000 hectares of new farmland across the state.

The new farmland would cut across key food and cash crops spectrum with an emphasis on the development of domestic small and medium scale agriculture.

Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who made the disclosure at the presentation of 2014 budget proposal to the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin City, the state capital, said the investment would create over 300,000 new jobs over the next three years of his administration.

BusinessDay reports that the state ministry of agriculture and natural resources has identified over 200,000 hectares of farmland across the three senatorial districts in its land data bank initiative.

The 200,000 hectares of farmland are part of the state government agricultural policies to encourage investors that have indicated interest to invest in the state agribusiness sector.

The land is in addition to several hundred thousands of the state government’s reserved land for commercial agricultural activities.

Is there a law that says a state government cannot repair a federal road? How many federal roads did Fashola repair in Lagos, on which he later turned round to collect a refund? Others should copy his example. Repair the road, and collect your refund.

No , there is nothing stopping a state government from attending to federal roads in their state. You cannot however compare the financial power of Lagos to Edo. Lagos State can afford resources for such and await anytime payment from the federal government. Edo cannot afford that.

You forgot so soon that all almost all the primary and secondary schools in Edo state have been modernized with learning equipment and no more leaking roofs of ours schools? When did you go to Idia college? Have you been to imaguero college of late and many schools in and around Benin of late? Are you aware that the Specialist hospital, when completed will be second to none in Nigeria and you think such a project can be completed in three years? Have you forgotten that the Benin master drainage plan is on going? Have you forgotten that many villages have been linked to cities and turned around for good. For the YES scheme, it was not a company itself many an SPV to empower the youth. At inception, they engaged close to 10, 000 youth and the intention was for empowerment, which was so until it was scrapped few months ago, i.e. after about 7 years. Will you agree with me that majority of these YES workers, perhaps like you were, were not productive? Majority of them were students and some were just idle doing nothing, but going to collect their salary at the end of each month(for doing nothing). Even a handful of others were gainfully employed elsewhere, yet they continued to feed fat on the state's scarce resources. Any youth that wanted to be truly empowered would have long gotten something better out of the scheme after more than 7 years of 'free' money(a good spender would have saved to do one other Bizness of the other. For your information, a younger brother of mine was one and was affected too, so I know what am saying.

Re: Edo State- Oshiomole Where Are The Industries by mikolo80: 12:56am On Sep 30, 2015
osemwengie1:
When Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in 2007 as a gubernatorial candidate promised Edo people that if elected, the State should say goodbye to poverty, a lot of our people were overjoyed and voted for him believing that their messiah had come and things will change for the better. Their confidence in him was not because they were gullible but because of his former track record as a union leader and so they assumed that everything he promised would be strictly implemented. Seven years after, a lot of things have happened but poverty has not gone from Edo State but rather has become worse.

I sincerely believe the Comrade Governor came with plenty of passion and perhaps good intentions but government and governance requires far more than that. Before Chief Obafemi Awolowo announced free education as a cardinal programme of his party, he had commissioned a team of educational and economic experts to brainstorm on the needs, cost and feasibility of the programme on a sustainable basis. The governor started well by establishing an economic team but what have they done by way of recommendations and achievements? We need to know so that we can truly assess their performance. In the interim, they appear to be only concerned with increased taxes to the detriment of increased businesses. Are they aware of how many businesses we have in the State and how well they are doing? Have they initiated or encouraged the governor to invite business owners to an economic summit to discuss Ways and Means to improve the business environment of the State? We live in a very competitive environment and government must lobby or woo investors to establish in their State. This is a serious and technical assignment that must be performance driven with definite time lines. The newly elected governor of Lagos State has already established an overseas investment desk to coordinate Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) which has led to top executives of multi-national corporations like Walmart visiting the government of Lagos on investment talks. Poverty will not go if there are no industries that will stimulate economic growth and create jobs. Token and cosmetic efforts like the Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES) which has crashed is not the answer to poverty eradication or alleviation but a well coordinated and articulated economic programme founded on Public Private Partnership with government creating the enabling environment.

There are no government industries or business concern thriving today in the State. The celebrated announcement by the comrade governor at the beginning of his second term that the Dangote Group were establishing a huge fertilizer factory at Agenebode that will employ at least 10,000 workers is now a mirage and has gone with the wind. Equally painful to Edo people is the foundational laying ceremony of Shoprite mall at Sapele road by Dumez road junction in Benin City which was done with fanfare by the governor and has since been abandoned. Not to mention the proposed ultra modern business complex that was supposed to overlook the ringroad where the historic Agidigbi house used to be but appears now to just be a dream. Bendel Brewery, that cash cow established by Prof. Ambrose Ali which was sold under very dubious circumstances to Church gate group and which was forcefully retrieved by Chief Lucky Igbinedion for the State has been abandoned in spite of its economic potentials. Ditto Edo Line, Edo Courier Service, Observer newspaper, Ethiope publishing, Bendel insurance etc. Okpilla cement factory which was revived through a privatization programme which the comrade governor commendably continued and finalised is not operational owing to issues arising on the ownership rights of the limestone at Okpilla and strangely the State government has remained non committal to this lingering problem.

Government must not only show interest but get involved in the problems affecting businesses in the State. When New Nigeria bank was to be sold off many years ago, the governments of Edo and Delta State collectively intervened and were able to broker a deal with NDIC that saw the survival of the bank until it merged with other banks to become what it is now known as Unity bank. As at today, the Edo State government is seen as hostile, unapproachable and indifferent to economic initiatives. Under such atmosphere or perception, it will be difficult to attract those capable of industrializing the state. To attract investors and industries you must have an economic policy backed by legislation.

Do we have an investors guide that advertises our agricultural, mineral and economic potentials? Such handbook professionally and attractively packaged is a sine qua non for investment drive. Has the State demarcated land for industrial use and what is their policy for land required, for industrial purpose? What is government tax policy to investors? Are there tax holidays or rebates for certain kind of businesses? Such information should be in the investors guide and in the public domain. What is government disposition to Public Private Partnership and in which area is government interested in such partnership? These issues are key to attracting investors. The State must embark on an economic road show when the aforementioned prerequisites have been fulfilled and the governor as chief executive must personally drive the process. Edo State however has a lot of well meaning indigenes abroad and in Nigeria who are willing to invest at home if the government can make the environment conducive and attractive for them. We must initiate this process. ‪#‎TheFutureIsNow‬!

I was conversing with a bozo. So, the federal government should abdicate it's duty and wait for the bill from the states? After all, that is how Lagos State operates. And, I can bet my life that there are many dilapidated federal roads in Lagos that the state government can never contemplate patching.
