Statistically speaking, flying is still the safest way to travel. In fact, the National Center for Health Statistics estimates the average person’s odds of dying in a plane crash at 1 in 20,000. Compare that to the odds of being struck by lightning (1 in 3,000) or dying in a car accident (1 in 100). Commercial airplanes are highly regulated in most countries, and must pass extensive testing before being approved for flight. Advancements in technology have outfitted modern planes with highly effective safety features that prevent catastrophic failures mid-flight. But no matter how fit the vessel, or how advanced the technology, there is one element that is impossible to control: the human element. People, even highly trained professionals, will make mistakes. Though major pilot error happens rarely, the results canbe truly devastating. source: http://www.lolwot.com/11-devastating-plane-crashes-caused-by-pilot-error/ http://www.therichest.com/rich-list/most-shocking/10-horrible-plane-crashes-caused-by-pilot-error/ http://www.eyeopening.info/2014/03/29/30-shocking-facts-airlines-dont-want-you-to-know http://www.viralnova.com/flight-facts/ 1. TransAsia Flight 235(2015). Two minutes after takeoff, one of TransAsia 235’s engines suffered a type of failure known as a flameout. Ordinarily this would not lead to a crash, as modern airplanes are designed to run on one engine if necessary. Unfortunately, the pilot mistook the functioning engine for the malfunctioning one and shut it off. This left the plane powerless as the crew desperately scrambled to restart the engine and avoid the heavily populated cityscape below. One of the wings clipped a bridge and the plane crashed into a nearby river. Dashcam footage reveals just how close it came to wiping out the bridge out entirel 12 Likes 12 Shares

2. Air France Flight AF447(2009). While the captain of Air France flight AF447 took a break, the plane’s autopilot suddenly disengaged and its co-pilot began receiving inconsistent readings for a few minutes indicating that there was an issue with the plane’s speed sensors which were blocked by ice. After waking the pilot from his sleep, the co-pilot remained at the controls and raised the angle of the plane’s climb until it stalled three times and finally fell into the ocean, killing all onboard. The crash ultimately had little to do withthe speed sensors and was blamed on the co-pilot’s choice to tilt the plane upwards as a response to the issue. 11 Likes 5 Shares

3. Asiana Flight 214(2013). On July 6th, 2013, Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash landed at San Francisco International airport after its tail section hit a seawall and became detached from the rest of the fuselage, killing three people. Investigations concluded that the pilot had selected the wrong autopilot mode, decreasing the plane’s speed which caused it to land short of the runway. This accident was a prime example of pilots’ reliance on automated systems and showcased the captain in question’s lack of monitoring awareness. By the time the crew realized how low they were flying at 100 feet, it was too late to conduct a go-around. 3 Likes 6 Shares

4. American Airlines Flight 587(2001). Just two months after 9/11, New Yorkers were shocked by another airplane disaster, this time in Queen. American Airlines flight 587 went down shortly after taking off from Kennedy airport on November 12, 2001. The plane, bound for the Dominican Republic, With as much training as commercial pilots receive, sometimes they just cannot be prepared for what’s about to come their way. After encountering heavy turbulence, American Airlines Flight 587 turned from side to side due tothe pilot over-applying a rudder pedal. Despite his desperate attempts to level the plane, the rudder failed from excessive stress and the aircraft rolled onto its side, crashing into five homes and killing 265 people. 7 Likes 4 Shares

5. Heloius Airways Flight 522(2005). The crash of Helios Airways Flight 522 was sadly caused by one very small pilot error that goes to show just how many crucial details are involved in flying an aircraft. During their pre-flight preparations, the flight crew didn’t switch the cabin pressurization to “auto” and lost consciousness due to a lack of oxygen while flying in the cabin. The plane continued to fly on auto-pilot until it ran out of fuel, crashing into a mountainside in Greece and killing all onboard. The strange circumstances of the flight and disturbing scenes witnessed by F-16 fighter pilots scrambled to intercept the plane have baffled authorities. Officials have said there are no indications of sabotage or terrorism. http://www.briandunning.com/helios.shtml More photos: **Graphics** http://www.documentingreality.com/forum/f237/boeing-737-helios-crash-scene-greece-96025/ 5 Likes 2 Shares

6. Polish Air Force TU154(2010). In 2010, Polish president Lech Kaczynski, his wife and several other military officials were killed when Polish Air Force plane TU154 crashed in Russia. The crash was a classic case of “get there-itis”, a term often referred to in the aviation community for when pilots risk dangerous landings or flying conditions because they don’t want to upset passengers, airline officials or the system in general. In this case, the pilot ignored automated warnings and attempted an unadvised landing in heavy fog; crashing into a forest and killing all onboard. 4 Likes 2 Shares

If the oxygen masks drops down, you only have about 15 minutes of oxygen from the point of pulling them down. However, that is more than enough time for the pilot to take us to a lower altitude where you can breathe normally. More important at altitude, you have 15-20 seconds before you pass out. Put yours on first, then do your kids. Passing out for a few seconds won’t harm the kids. 37 Likes 1 Share

Do not EVER drink water on an aircraft that did not come from a bottle. The drinking water, that used for making coffee, tea, etc., should NEVER be consumed. The holding tanks in these planes are sometimes 60 year old and are never cleaned. They have accumulated so much greenish grime on the walls that in some places it can be inches thick. 27 Likes 8 Shares

United Airlines flight 173(1978). Suffered fuel exhaustion and crashed short of the runway in a suburban Portland neighborhood in 1978, miraculously only killing 10 of its 189 people on board. After becoming distracted with a faulty landing gear, the pilot decided to abort the plane’s initial landing to assess the problem and prepare passenger’s for an emergency landing. In the process, the flight crew became so absorbed with the issue that everybody failed to realize that the aircraft was about to run out of fuel. Flight 173 became a textbook example in aviation training in an effort to try to teach future flight crews to maintain situational awareness when problems occur in the cockpit. 4 Likes 6 Shares

A plane can still glide 6 nautical miles for every 5000 feet. So at 35,000 feet, a plane can glide about 42 miles without power. Its why most accidents happen landing or taking off. 11 Likes 1 Share

Pilots are served different meals and cannot share, this is done in case of food poisoning. Stealing food, even if they are going to throw it out can get crew fired instantly. You can ask your supervisor, but you cannot take food. 10 Likes 2 Shares

When a plane is landing at night, they dim the interior lights in case you need to evacuate upon landing, your eyes are already adjusted to the darkness so you’ll be able to see better once outside the plane. 36 Likes 2 Shares

KLM 4805/Pan Am1736(1977). (Recreated Images). Commonly referred to as the Tenerife Airport Disaster, flights KLM 4805 and Pan Am 1736 collided on a runway in the Canary Islands in 1977 after pilot miscommunication with radio traffic control. Due to an overcrowding of planes on the runway following a bomb explosion at a nearby airport and heavy fog, air traffic controllers were having a hard time keeping the runway organized, let alone being able to see it. From the tower, nobody was able to see that the Pan AM and KLM flights were sitting on the same runway. The pilot of the KLM flight misinterpreteda radio traffic controller’s muffled “OK” and assumed he was clear for take-off, instead of asking the controller to clarify. The flight then geared for take off, crashing directly into the Pan AM flight sitting on the runway and killing 583 people making it the deadliest crash in aviation history. 8 Likes 7 Shares

In the event of a fire, you have approximately 90 seconds to exit the plane before the whole thing is toast. Also, if you sit more than 5 rows away from an exit, statistically you will more than likely not survive. 13 Likes 2 Shares

The black box can be destroyed. Contrary to popular belief, the small box is destructible if it comes under the heavy wings of the plane or is exposed to the extreme heat of the plane's fuel. 12 Likes 3 Shares

There's more risk of turbulence now than ever before. Thanks to global warming, there's an increase of carbon dioxide in the air. So the next time you keep your ignition burning for too long at the red light, remember you are contributing that much more to global warming. Which in turn is causing turbulence for someone up in the sky. 21 Likes 3 Shares

The planes are not as new as you think. According to 'Airfare Watchdog', an airline expert, the skies are full of old airplanes including the Boeing 717s and the primitive versions of the 757, 767 and 737. Before the production of 757 was brought to a halt, you could have been flying in the same plane that your grandfather flew in 20 years ago. 14 Likes 4 Shares

The pilot is often exhausted. According to a study, more than half of the pilots have fallen asleep in the cockpit. This is due to their extensive working hours and the toll the time zones take on them. I don't even want to know what happens when both the pilot and the co-pilot are fast asleep at the controls. 36 Likes 7 Shares

Mozambique Airlines(2013). Herminio dos Santos Fernandes, the pilot of Mozambique Airlines Flight TM470 bound for Luanda, Angola, intentionally crashed the plane in a national park in Namibia on Nov. 29, 2013, according to investigators. All 33 people on board were killed. When the flight’s co-pilot left to use the lavatory, the captain locked him out of the cockpit and manually steered the plane downward. Listening to recovered flight recordings, investigators wereable to hear alarms and banging on the cockpit door. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2015/03/26/world/history-plane-crashes-pilots.html?_r=0 image source: dailymail. uk 4 Likes 4 Shares
