freelife4all:Its good to start with a demonstration plots. Because the size is small, one can easily calculate the inputs and the out puts and so know the ROI. What works in my area may not neccesarily work in your area. Most online figures are not feasible in African countries because of so many things. Climate, Soil type, soil content, pest, disease are not similar. However ROI starts from 0_ whatever percentage you can achieve under good agricultural practises 1 Like |

noblefarm:I am sorry about your plants. Vegetables are delicate crops. They have a lot of diseases and pest that needs to be prevented from onset. There are lot involve in the production. Its not about just sowing. A farmer needs to know all the diseases and pest before planting. Because they have no cure once your plant is infected. Prevention, treating your soil, using the right organic matter at the right time are the only way around it |

OLAMIMO12: My tomato seedlings are four weeks as of today, still in nursery. I got an emergency and travelled. Will be back when they are five weeks old. Will they be too old for transplanting? What are the implications? Kindly advise OLAMIMO12: |

jethro2: I Appreciate Your Great Work On Nairaland. Please When Harvesting The Tomatoes, Will They Be Reddish In Colour? Secondly, What Is The Best Time To Plant Tomato?. Thirdly, If After Planting Operations, There Are 2000 Surviving Plants, What Could Be The Number Of Tomatoes That They (2000 Tomato Plants) Can Produce? |

noblefarm: I am no expert but from a biginner's consideration, your soil looks compacted. It looks from the picture you do not have a clear walk/foot path for the farm so people and/or equipment freely walk on/around the beds and this have been said to cause soil compaction- it makes it diffcult for air/water to get to the root of your plants and, for the plant root to reach deeper for nutrients. Some of the solution i have seen are if you have a broadfork/pitchfork/soil aerator or any prodding metal that can loosen (not pulverise) the soil abit without damaging the roots system it may help with the above. The second thing is mulching. If i were in your shoes i wouldnt expose my soil to direct sun light-i have learnt it increase soil temperature causing heat stress and loss of moisture You may put leaves, grass clippings, wood chips to cover up your bed. These have been said to be better for our climate compared to plastic and fabric mulch Ultimately without an idea of the composition of your soil through a soil test- All i have said and probably what you have been doing would amount to guess work. 1 Like |

ebukasoso:You harvest tomatoes as it begins to ripen. It has several stages of colouring. I am sorry I can't help you with that calculation. Maybe when you start your farm you can take time to calculate what each plant will produce. I also have interest in getting that answer. |

Re: Step By Step Guide For Growing Tomato--pictures by jethro2: 6:16am On Oct 09, 2015 |
Entrepreneur Youth Multipurpose Cooperative How to treat tomato diseases 1. Note symptoms. Diagnose your tomato plant’s problem by comparing its symptoms with descriptions of specific diseases. 2. Treat according to recommendation for the specific disease. Ways to prevent tomato diseases Take steps to keep diseases away or reduce their severity. 1. Rotate crops Many bacteria, fungi, and viruses can survive years in the soil. Reduce incidence when you plant tomatoes no more than once every three years in the same spot. Avoid planting other Solanaceous crops (members of the same family as tomatoes, including potato, pepper, and eggplant) in the same area, too – they are susceptible to many of the same diseases as tomatoes. 2. Improve soil Before planting, add a good amount of compost or organic matter to the home garden to improve the soil. Extra nutrients and aeration grow stronger plants which can resist infection. 3. Plant disease-resistant tomato varieties Many hybrid tomato varieties are bred specifically to resist particular diseases. Plant disease-resistant varieties to have the healthiest crop possible. Tomato disease-resistant codes are listed on seed or seedling packets in capital letters. They include: V = Verticillium Wilt F = Fusarium Wilt N = Nematodes A = Alternaria T = Tobacco Mosaic Virus St = Stemphylium (Gray Leaf Spot) TSWV = Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus 3. Don’t under-water or over-water Keep tomatoes on a regular watering schedule to help them stay healthy and strong. Avoid over-watering which can lead to consistently wet conditions – the perfect environment for many bacteria, fungi, and viruses to multiply. 4. Destroy infected plants If you allow infected plants to over-winter in the garden or if you throw them on the compost pile, there’s a good chance disease will spread to other plants or multiply in the soil. Throw away or burn infected plants. 1 Like 1 Share |
