I believe that such backward thinking, rather than creating strong stable marriages only leads to a weak form of it. For a marriage should be between two individuals who know themselves and are complementing each other on their personal growth and development and NOT where one person seeks value and worth in another person or institution If this is not the dumbest thing I've read then it must surely be the second dumbest! I keep telling feminist that no one is against women being successful but don't drag your man down! Look at the so called advanced countries, what is the divorce rate? What about the rate of single mothers? It is the so called backward thinking that still gives African countries a lower rate of divorce than some of the disillusioned advanced countries. Even the almighty gives a man certain dominance over his woman as long as he treats her fairly, so what's the stress? African women are conditioned to focus on marriage because as Africans we are all about family, all about multiplying and expanding our empire, we realize that while it is the man that usually builds the house, it is eventually the woman that makes it a home. So you might call it backward but what does all the personal accomplishments profit a woman if at the end of the day she can't keep her home? What shall it profit her if she has all the qualities of a boss but none of a good wife and/or mother? 11 Likes 3 Shares |

MizMyColi: Not generalizing but even people like Angelina Jolie after all the fame & fortunes still recognized the need to be married & live under a man. |

I've been trying to educate girls everywhere I go. Thank you for this. It's a shame girls over here don't even have any aim in life, just marriage. They judge their worth by a ring and that's all they live for, how can the country grow? I have a cousin who became rude and insulting just because a guy proposed to her she demanded to be called 'Aunty' by everyone. Please Ladies you have a brain, you have a purpose in life. You were not born solely for marriage. Even the marriage, you can't have a lasting happy one if you don't have a purpose in life. Hence the high rate of divorce today. Why were you born? You have a purpose here. Discover it, Discover God too. Then you will have it all. 10 Likes 1 Share |

nnamdibig: And is this thread in anyway advocating that ladies shouldn't get married? Did Angelina pursue her drems or not? Did she live life on her own terms or not? Did you read this part of the topic or not? I believe that such backward thinking, rather than creating strong stable marriages only leads to a weak form of it.
Helep me tell them make them hear!!! |

MizMyColi: Know this, my dear ladies, it is written, "thy desire shall be unto thy husband"...please CONTEMPLATE this. Your true pride as a woman is in you remaining a woman, not trying to be a man or fighting men for supposed rights. You are different to a man! The earlier you realize this and stop fighting a laid down principle the better for you and society. 1 Like |

mordtonia: This is the summary of the OP. But I see some folks getting all jittery with the thought that we are dismissing marriage. The funny thing is that some of us, Ladies will still read it and call it thrash. As far as they are concerned, that ring and title is everything. *sighs* smh 3 Likes |

If Genevieve wanted to marry she would have done so a long time. Where do you people get this idea that women are looking for "husband"? Do you know how much messages/dates that the average nairaland female user gets weekly?. Even walking down the street gaan sef. It's even easier at parties /clubs/weddings to find a man. Nigeria is heavily populated ! Most women who are not married usually have a very good reason in Nigeria usually have a solid reason. 1 Like |

peppyluv02: I just look through the thread and i see people like safarigirl, mizmycoli and the rest of the crew are all having a feminist "free the women" 0rgy. Once they are off this thread, they live opposite lives, exactly as described here. I know many women championing this cause. My ex is one and it's funny she is still over me. So much for being a feminist These women live sad lives, i don't mean the young ones on this thread who are still too young to comprehend what it means to be successful but lonely. I mean the real women who have an emotional void that only men can fill but they act all independent and i don't care about men and in their much reasonable states begin to feel sad about their boring lives. I only feel sorry for those reading this and looking for an affirmation to keep living the feminist fantasy idea of independence and giving no shit about a man. Those are the ones that will later hear few years down the line that these same women who were acting like F$%k marriage are all married. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Admit it or not this is the plight of the average Nigerian woman. They have been brought up to think that without a man in their lives they're worthless. The society mounts incessant pressure on the Nigerian woman to get married if she must be accorded respect. Until a woman understands that she can be complete, happy and fulfilled without a man and a legal enslavement called marriage they would never make significant progress in their lives. And likewise for men in some cases. The gender prejudice that exist in our society is too enormous to be ignored. 8 Likes |

lilmax: Now that's a statement...yap, yap yap everyday 'bout the same old ish without determined steps taken to address the situation. Walk the talk man! (I mean Woman!) P.S. I also believe a large proportion of what the average woman suffers today is largely her fault. How/why?....a thesis for another day but suffice it to say that you don't fight fire with fire or water with water, two wrongs can NEVER make a right never minding the philosophizing and instances given to the contrary, it's just a matter of time, the truth of the saying still bears out. |

Probably the most stupidd article I've read in a while..... Exactly, Even as boys growing up we had our own training as well. Mom would always say " Don't cry, be a man that you are" or Why would you allow your sister carry that can? don't you know as a man you should do the heavy job? So @Op your post should rather be in the direction of educating and even reminding the ladies of today on the morals/virtues they all should imbide to bring out the best in them. 3 Likes |
