There is hardly any part of Enugu that is not passing through some kind of difficulty or the other. Thank God Nsukka is accessible, I know a man who could not bury his father from April till now, they are waiting for the dry season before any vehicles can enter his village. They cannot carry the coffin on their heads pass the deep muddy waters. Sad.

I think they've moved to Asaba. It is cheaper to shoot in Asaba, and Asaba is closer to the film marketers at Onitsha.

The truth is that Enugu State Government has not done much to aggressively promote Enugu. They just take certain things for granted - that everyone will prefer Enugu or that no town can compete against Enugu.

Asaba now has airport (which Enugu has) and is gradually getting built up. If Obiano marks out a planned urban area in Anambra (not just making noise about it) and builds an airport there, a lot less people will come to Enugu.

If i had the resources and connection, i will invest in Enugu as a whole but guess what? i'm not from there!. Enugu is beautiful, i never knew the extent of her beauty till i joined nairaland and followed this thread. There is always an emotional connection every Igbo man has with Enugu. Any one who has ever been to Johannesburg, will understand why Enugu has the qualities of a world class city. In Johannesburg, The city traffic can never hold you for hours because the roads are well planned and mapped out. You can get to one location using the inner streets roads rather than the main roads. Enugu Is well planned already, Her rolling hills makes her unique. her intra-state roads are good, If enugu can continue in this manner, I mean with rigorous tree planting, I promise you, Population demographics will change. I for one, Lagos is no longer attractive to lagosians ( I mean born and bred). As for me, this is a better time for enugu to grab a chunk of migrating lagosians, Even if enugu has no industries, she can support her growing population with S.M.Es , tax breaks and lots of freebies, It is well known that population can grow a state economy...

Exactly, if you have ever traveled out of Nigeria, you will agree that Lagos ends on the island. the rest is bullpoo. The picture below is Johannesburg, Dont be deceived, those buldings are decayed already, it is a crime hot-bed, who doesn't know "town", hillbrow and the surrounding areas, Most whites have moved to sandton, fourways, bryanston and the surrounding areas,very far from that picture you are seeing, although sandton has mordern tall structures but the majority around the new city are modern low riders maybe 3-6 storeys high. Demographics has changed! All im saying is, you don't have to have skyscrapers to be a world class city, it is the infrastructure and planning that makes a city world class. As far as im concerned , enugu has a very bright future!!!

I pray he fares better than chime, Every igbo man looks up to him to develop enugu, i want enugu to develop. i want her to be amongst the best cities in Nigeria, Enugu is sellable. i've not been to enugu but i'm planning to go there to spend some time and see her beauty for my self.

Nsukka my beloved , her semi temperate climate makes me wonder why one refused to build premium homes, i mean a home away from home. a place i can vacate to. This lagos heat makes me feel like the whole of nigeria is hot which is not true.

I am pleading with you to convince those buying land in your estate to commit to having a great neighborhood like in the picture below, apart from having a conducive home of their own. using interlocking stones to pave the streets with gutters on both ends of each street should be part of the estate development plan.

A great environment isn't really about building multi-storey buildings as Hillbrow, South Africa. Willow0802 is actually right. Those skyscrapers make it harder to renew a city once demographics change and income fall.Also remember what happened to Detroit because GM almost got bankrupt. That is part of the genius of Abuja. They banned any building higher than 12 floors.

Having a clean functional and green neighborhood is the genius people like Spyder must teach our people, so that we don't repeat the mistakes of these urban jungles elsewhere. Even if the structures are bungalow, if they are well planned, it helps improve the ambiance of the city and reduces crime. If even bungalows are well designed and effort is made to make the environment modern, they may be even better than multi-storey building. I am not saying duplexes or well designed office buildings isn't great

Very good points, I made sure I included the rules where buyers are not allowed to build anything high in my estate. I ensured there is a division from zones, and the types of houses one is allowed to build there.

I love greens, the main distinguishing feature between my estate and the rest is my plan for greenery. I purposefully named my estate "Royal palms estates" because the planting of royal palms in every possible corner of the estate is my plan, the planting will start as soon as possible, so that it continues to grow and by the time buyers are ready to build, the trees would have become tall enough to envelope the whole estate and create the kind of ambiance unseen in these other estates. I am going to do this in every estate I develop in Enugu, Anambra and Imo states ongoing.

Abeg, na shoprite we go chop? The only places I usually enjoy in enugu is Toscana, 8 hours, afro lounge and a few others. apart from these, that place is boring, especially during december.

Poultry farmers smile as Gov. Ugwuanyi commissions hatchery

For poultry farmers in Enugu State and the South-East region – their major headache – travelling far distances to get day-old chicks has been completely cured.
Before now, the farmers had relied on hatcheries in the South-West and other regions of the country for their farms.
But last week, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and other relevant stakeholders officially commissioned the ultra-modern Animal Health Farms and Hatcheries, a privately-owned hatchery built in partnership with the state government through the Commercial Agricultural Development Project (CADP) and the World Bank.
The commissioning of the hatchery has seen poultry farmers in the region now heaving a sigh of relief.
This is as the hatchery, which is capable of producing 30,000 eggs in a week, would reduce the hardship experienced by poultry farmers in the state and the South-East geo-political zone in travelling far distances to buy day-old chicks from other regions.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony and first roll out of Day-Old Chicks (DOCs) of the hatchery, Ugwuanyi commended the establishment, describing it as a laudable gesture which would greatly enhance poultry farming in the state.
The governor, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Water Resources, Mike Eneh, noted that aside relieving poultry farmers in the state of the stress of going to the South-West to procure DOCs, the hatchery would also help in providing jobs for the teeming youths of the state.
His words: “This is the second hatchery in the South-East and also in South-South and from what we have seen so far, I think people from Kaduna and Kano also take their own chicks from this direction. Apart from reducing the stress witnessed while going to buy DOCs from outside the state and the risk of transporting them, another thing it did was that it reduced the cost of day-old chicks from 250 to about 180. So, we are quite delighted. We thank the World Bank and commercial agriculture project for their support in this too.
“Initially, poultry was nothing in Enugu. But thank God that today, it has grown in leaps and bounds, being the fourth in the country and second in the South-East and South-South. Last year, I recall that the net addition of the poultry industry, outside hatchery, to the economy of Enugu State is about 1.48 billion. The reason is simple; Enugu has one of the best weather conditions for poultry industry in Nigeria. So, we hope to invest more in poultry production in the near future.”
The governor also disclosed the state government’s plan to initiate policies aimed at the overall development of other areas of farming such as cashew production.
According to him, “Enugu State has one of the best cashews in the world in terms of quality. There are two important things we need to do. One is the aggregation center which we proposed to build in Obollo Afor and the second thing concerns geo-products.”
He said that he would “support any community that is willing to give us land, so that we can train these farmers, give them seedlings so that they can plough them in five hectares as an enterprise and also create jobs”.
Also speaking, the National Coordinator of CADP, Dr Babandi Amin, praised the management of the company for deeming it fit to establish the hatchery, pointing out that it would go a long way in boosting poultry farming not only in the state but also in the entire country.
Dr Amin harped on the need to sustain the venture, saying that the issue was not really on establishment but in making efforts to sustain what was already on ground.
“We should also be looking at the results we are getting. Are the results commensurate with the inputs we are making or are they below the expectations? We should also look at the demand of poultry in the state and be able to determine whether what we have on ground already is meeting these demands or not. It is when these things are considered that we will be able to say we are reaching our goals of making these poultry products available to our people accordingly,” he said.
Also speaking, the Manager, Animal Health Farms and Hatcheries, Dr Benjamin Oguejiofor, explained that part of why the hatchery was established was to compensate for the treatment meted to day-old chicks distributors, especially those from the South Eastern part of the country by already existing hatcheries that are mostly located in the South-West.
He noted that due to the fact that over 80 per cent of the hatcheries in the country are located in the South-West, people from the state while going to purchase DOCs, usually involve in great risks which he listed as threat to lives occasioned by night travels, exposure to armed robbery, road accidents, chick mortalities, among others.
According to him, the vision of setting up the hatchery was actualized with the emergence of the state Commercial Agriculture Development Project (CADP), which he said has played a great role to seeing that the hatchery was established.
“The success story of CADP intervention is why we are here today, to celebrate dream come true”, he said.
While pointing out that the hatchery has a total egg capacity for 95,040 with a multi-stage setter capable of handling 30,000 eggs every week, Dr Oguejiofor expressed hope that the hatchery would not only provide poultry farmers in the state with quality and viable day-old chicks, but would also provide over 100 jobs mostly to natives of Enugu State and others by extension.
He, therefore, called on the state government and other relevant stakeholders in the state to key into the idea of improved poultry production in the state, adding that “if we are able to improve on the little we already have now, Enugu State will soon emerge as one of the best states in terms of poultry production”.
Also commenting, the state Coordinator of CADP, Mr Robinson Nduaguba, expressed optimism that the hatchery was a sign of more good things for farmers in the state, adding that “this is a form of provocation to the youths in Enugu State to go into a project that will keep them very busy and make the state to be a food security zone.
“I know that Enugu State is already creating an enabling environment for private sector investors and the example shown by this establishment is quite challenging. We will do everything possible to make sure that this establishment doesn’t relax. Instead, it will continue to improve and by so doing meet the expectations of our people.”

Ugwuanyi bridges Enugu infrastructural deficit with N14.2bn credit facility

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is taking the Federal Government N14.2 billion loan facility through the Central Bank of Nigeria,CBN,to spur infrastructural development of Enugu State.

Ugwuanyi approached the state House of Assembly, last week, for approval to procure two separate loans from the CBN.

The details show that N10 bn is for infrastructural projects and N4.207bn for the payment of the arrears of pensions and salaries owed public servants.

The loans are part of the arrangement of the Federal Government to assist state governments out of their financial challenges arising from the global glut in the oil market.

The decision to give loans up to N10bn to state governments interested was reached at the June 2015 meeting of the National Economic Council,NEC. Following that decision, the CBN, on September 1, wrote to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum,NGF, requesting the governors interested in the loan to file applications.

STEPS TO PROCURE LOAN

The Enugu government began the process to procure the loans through two separate Executive Council,EXCO, memos from the state Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, Mrs. Eucharia Offor, deliberated upon during the council meeting of September 21 .

Same day, the state House of Assembly sat and, among other issues, deliberated on a motion on notice presented by the Leader of the House, Ikechukwu Ezugwu, seeking the approval of the loans.

The House, through a Motion on Notice,HM/03/2015, passed a resolution authorising the state government to obtain the N14.2billion loans.

The loan carries single interest rate of nine percent and 20 years repayment period.



CRITICAL AREAS OF INFRASTRUCTRAL NEED

Penocks-NOWAS-Timber Shed-T-Junction-Ugwuogo-Nike and Abakpa Junction-Liberty-T-Junction roads, earmarked by the governor for rehabilitation and dualization, are a sore point in Enugu metropolis.

Ugwuanyi had, in his maiden tour immediately after assumption of office, announced the intention of his administration to end motorists’ pain occasioned by traffic gridlock on both roads.

Major artery to the Enugu-North senatorial zone following the construction of the Ugwogo-Nike-Opi Junction-Nsukka road, the roads, if rehabilitated and dualized,will reduce manhours wasted in transit, cut the cost of farm produce and increase the cost of landed properties along that flank and open the area as an investment destination when compared to the saturated metropolis and trigger economic activities along that corridor.

Sunday Vanguard checks revealed that a journey of 10 minutes from T-junction to any part of the metropolis takes an energy,economic and time-sapping hours.

A cross section of Enugu residents interviewed expressed support for the governor’s resolve to rehabilitate and dualize the roads. Whereas Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority,ECTDA, has posted notices on walls of owners, asking them to remove property that may obstruct the project,residents are itchy to see earth moving machines mobilized to site.

Meanwhile, Sunday Vanguard learnt that Enugu Transport Company,ENTRACO; Institute of Management and Technology,IMT; Water Corporation; Daily Star,among others, will benefit from the bail-out funds.

Funds from the bailout will also be used to complete the Enugu International Conference Centre,ICC.

Having reached 80 per cent completion,the ICC commissioning promises to boost tourism,hospitality and culture in Enugu.
