ABUJA—The National Assembly is set to begin the process of constitution amendment towards ensuring immunity for heads of the three arms of government.

To also benefit from the immunity, when the constitution is amended, are the Deputy Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, his deputy and the Chief Justice of the Federation, CJN.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, was recently docked by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, over the alleged falsification in his asset declaration over 10 years ago.

The trial of the Senate President has attracted criticism, even as some have alleged that his trial was a political witch-hunt, following his alleged stubbornness in contesting for the position of the Senate presidency, contrary to party decision.

Worried by what have been described as constant external influence and manipulations in the choice of presiding officers of the National Assembly, the lawmakers are set to begin the process of amending the 1999 Constitution to include the Senate President and his deputy, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and his deputy as well as the Chief Justice of the Federation in the immunity.

This hint was dropped by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Leo Ogor, who exclusively told Vanguard that if the head of the executive arm, the President, and his vice should enjoy immunity, the heads of the other two arms of government, the legislature and the judiciary, should also benefit from the immunity.

This, Ogor reasoned, would reduce distractions and crisis in the National Assembly as well as put a stop to the frequent change of the presiding officers as a result of external influence.

Please let us for once strive along the course of building our nation rather than building personalities. We are blessed with a selfless leader let the progressives in the legislature and the judiciary take the front stage fearlessly to sanitise our system. We need to live as humans rather than animals serving only the strong. The concept that someone is found to abuse his office and enriched himself with publics funds and that a caveat is been sought for him to jump justice will kill the system. In civilised societies where governance is given the seriousness it deserved the allegations wielded against Saraki by a constitutional institution like the CCT will first have him resigned as the president of the senate. Nigerians must stand in unison behind govt institutions fighting any corrupt person if we want to build an ellegantarian society. We have the opportunity with Buhari.

saraki is a rogue and a thief and he can never succeed on this . I am sure nigerians will rise and put pressure on this rogue called NASS to drop this unreasonable agenda. This is this time we are praying that fraudster and corrupt people in govt should face the law for stealing and some idiot are thinking about how to protect the fraudster.

We are talking of removing immunity from the constitution, they are planning to widened the scope, very soon the traditional rulers will ask for immunity. I think this people have forgotten that they are elected to serve and not to lord.

Immunity from what?!
Are they afraid of voting criminals who need immunity.

They should do so for the Speaker of each state house of Assemblies and Judges too. They should flow it down to the Chairmen too. They should immune INEC chairman and commissioners too and probably the service chiefs.

Kari-ile immunity.

The president will never assent to that bill so they can keep "planning"..

It will give them something to occupy the LITTLE time they actually spend at plenary.

As for saraki, it brings to mind the Yoruba adage "won pe e lole, oun gbe omo eran jo"

Loosely translated, it means "you are alleged to be a thief & you still go dancing with a goat's kid.

No way! Saraki is just acting failed strategy. When we are asking that Immunity from Criminal offenses be removed completely for everyone, the dubious Saraki is trying to buy himself one.

To be vetoed after stipulated time. Flip the other way, why not remove immunity as Buhari campaigned?
