Senators Bring In New Twist To Stall Ministerial Screening by todyms: 7:49pm On Oct 05, 2015 |
By Henry Umoru & Joseph Erunke ABUJA — STRONG indications have emerged that tomorrow’s plenary session, where the Senate would unveil the ministerial list sent by President Muhammadu Buhari, may be stormy as senators are saying the President must, in line with the constitution, submit himself before the Upper Chamber for screening if he appointed himself Minister of Petroleum. They are also set to reject an incomplete list, saying the constitution provides for a nominee from each state of the federation and that any list that did not cover the 36 states would suffer serious opposition on the floor of the Senate. The senators have also vowed that they would not be cowed by the trial of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, just as they promised to adopt stringent measures in line with the provisions of the Constitution during the screening of ministerial nominees. They added that the tradition of take-a-bow for senators coming for screening as ministers would be jettisoned, adding that they were prepared to send names of nominees to the sender of such a list. Senate President, Dr. Saraki, is currently facing trial at CCT, following a 13-count charge levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, bordering on alleged corruption and false declaration of assets in 2003 and summoned him to appear before it, which he did. If this is true, then the senators are really out to frustrate our democracy and national development. Well, let them start first, then we will know what to answer them. 2 Likes |

I support this... Good one by our Senators. Why send in 21 names when our constitution requires names from all states - that's 36, plus the FCT making it 37. Anything short of that, the fools in apc are just joking as usual 5 Likes |

These people are lucky Baba is now a born-again democrat. These are people that command no respect anywhere, even in their wards, without brandishing Buharism. All this is happening because Baba played it cool with the Senate President election. But seriously how can APC get back their mandate from this stench-infested house. Imagine, we labored to have a new government for change only for PDP destructive machinery to hijack a piece of our mandate. While people die everyday all the Senators want to do is create further distraction for the government. Ministers will work with the President not in the Senate - so what is so spectacular in screening people who have already been vetted by relevant security agents. I hope APC leaders are now aware of the grave danger in giving their flag to all manner of characters. 1 Like |

Buhari will be very happy if the Senate does not screen the ministerial list because he never wanted ministers in the first instance. It is the constitution that is forcing him to appoint ministers. However, if he decides to swear in ministers without Senate screening as he has done for some appointments, what would the chest-beaters do? |

If the law says the list should contain names of 36 ministers from 36 states why present an half list, they should send d list back. He should be made to submit the list himself. Why didn't he choose to head EFCC so he can effectively fight corruption, or rather minister of power so he can effectively fix the problem of power, No but he wants to become minister for petroleum. He should be screened also, because Obasanjo did it, is not a yardstick for buhari to do it, wat is d position on the law on this. That's the question |

Re: Senators Bring In New Twist To Stall Ministerial Screening by wirinet(m): 8:35am On Oct 06, 2015 |
Grundig: The senators are just being immature in their tit for tat quarrel with the president. All executive powers reside in the president, it is only when he wants to appoint aids also called ministers (which Buhari prefers to call noise makers), that he needs senate approvals. So whether the senators approve the budget or not, the ministries would run. |
