What is however most disturbing to farmers and land owners is the way they forcefully colonize, kill, maim and allow their cattle to destroy farm crops wherever they set their feet. They have sadly transformed themselves into law.

The stories trailing the rampage of Fulani herdsmen and their cattle in the South-East are therefore as ugly as they are most discomforting.

The activities of these herdsmen in some communities in Abia State, for example, have become a source of great worry to the people. This is because of the huge damage the cattle inflict on crops and farmlands in these rural communities which the breeders illegally and brazenly colonize as grazing grounds. That the herdsmen dare them for a showdown when challenged is most provocative to victims of this menace!

Saturday Vanguard investigations revealed that, besides the damage on crops and other farm produce, the aggressive nature of the Fulani cattle guards is more of concern to any community they invade. They are always armed to the teeth with dangerous weapons, including AK47, charms and deadly sharp daggers and machetes and are often ready to attack the farm owners at the least confrontation.

Tales of woes

There have been reports of clashes between the herdsmen and farmers across the region. For instance, in Abia communities of Uzuakoli in Bende Local Government Area, Ebem and Akanu in Ohafia and Umuchieze in Umunneochi, there have been cases of deadly clashes between rural farmers and these cattle breeders.

In Uzuakoli, a man popularly known in the area as Ajambele sometime in the past received a deadly attack when he met cattle destroying his farm in the Over Rail area of the community and confronted the Fulani cattle herdsmen who had invaded the farmland with the cattle. The herdsmen were said to have used sharp dagger to rip open Ajambele’s stomach, forcing the intestines to gush out. He was said to have been rushed to a hospital and was lucky to have survived.

Cases of invasion of farmlands in Ebem and Akanu communities nearly resulted in bloodbath but the wisdom of the leaders in the community who timely reported to the authorities saved bloody clashes. Some of the cases were so serious that Abia State Government had to intervene, preventing the youths of the communities from retaliating. It set up a peace committee that quelled the then imminent doom.

The story is not different in Enugu State. Saturday Vanguard investigation revealed that attacks unleashed by Fulani herdsmen are a recurring decimal in the state. Of the 482 communities in Enugu State, one cannot boost of one community that has not had its fair share of Fulani herdsmen’s barbaric activities which leave in their wake,perennial tears of sorrow. Indigenes of Ezeagu tell stories of not only destruction of their farms but also rape of their women in their farms.

Over 70 percent of the people in the state who are domiciled in rural areas, engage in subsistent or commercial agricultural activities as their mainstay. But the recent increasing threat posed by Fulani herdsmen is rocking the fabric of their fundamental existence.

President-General, Eke Town Union, Mr. Anthony Enu, told Saturday Vanguard that the community was irked and the youths restive. He said: “Last year, the same Fulani herdsmen killed two of our brothers, Matthew Aniugo and Chiagha Chigbo, in their farms. The town is boiling with anger now. We have reported the matter to the Police. We are calling on all relevant authorities to prevail on these Fulani herdsmen to ensure justice for our people.”

The sleepy town of Nkpologu Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State was, last January, thrown into mourning following news of the death of a young woman on New Year eve, during a Fulani herdsmen’s robbery attack on a commuter bus.

The deceased, Veronica Ezugwu, 20, from Agum Village, Nkpologu Community was pronounced dead at Annunciation Hospital, Emene, Enugu. She had sustained several gunshot injuries during the robbery attack on the commuter bus conveying the victim and three other passengers home for Christmas on December 24, 2014.

The incident occurred at Camp Bus Stop, Nkpologu Community at 12.54pm. According to an eyewitness, three Fulani herdsmen, armed with short pump action double-barrelled guns, sprang from the bush and started shooting at the bus. The bus driver escaped into the bush with gunshot wounds, while the two other passengers sustained minor injuries. According to the eyewitness, “Veronica was hit on the head and eyes and her brain tissues severed.”

Contacted, the cousin to the deceased, Chinedu Ezugwu, said: “She was rushed immediately to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, UNTH, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu. But we could not get medical attention following the industrial action embarked upon by health workers.

“We then took her to Annunciation Hospital on December 25. She was operated on and the bullets removed. Eventually she died on New Year eve. We are yet to come to terms with the sad development. She was coming home for Christmas and had got to the bus stop to her village. I do not think we will ever recover from this”, Mr. Ezugwu lamented.

In Ebonyi State, people are usually uncomfortable with the activities of Fulani herdsmen simply because of their tendency to become violent at the slightest provocation. And due to their level of education, exposure and background, many people in the state tend to avoid them but only react to their misdemeanors whenever situations get out of control.

However, the complaints of those in Ebonyi border mainly on the ease with which the cattle rearers go into both private and public farms without permission to allow their cattle to graze in the area.

Farmers and villagers in Imo State also have gory tales to tell. Emotions ran high and tension was electric recently as scores of angry youths of Irete Community in the state, blocked the ever busy Owerri-Onitsha dual carriageway to protest the damnable activities of Fulani herdsmen in their community.

Obviously, the Hausa-Fulani herdsmen were at it again in the community, harassing the people who tried to resist efforts to turn their cassava, yam and vegetables farms into grazing fields for cattle. Some affected villagers told Saturday Vanguard that they now feel helpless and defenceless in their own communities, especially as the Federal and State Governments appear not ready to come to their assistance.

Presently, most farmers are now scared to go to their farms, while it is also true that they are afraid to move about in the night!

Many South-East socio-political leaders perceive the menace of these Fulani herdsmen as a threat to every Nigerian as their activities are nationwide. Following the recent abduction of Chief Olu Falae, a group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Stakeholders called on President Muhammadu Buhari to “cage the Fulani herdsmen now.”

The group, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr. Chukwudi Ibegbo said: “The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Stakeholders’ Forum was alarmed by the recent abduction of a Nigerian statesman and Yoruba leader, Chief Olu Falae, by Fulani herdsmen. This abduction, one too many, could have led to a national chaos if he was not released later by the marauders.

“Nigeria and her government should no longer keep quiet in the face of this Fulani terror in the Middle Belt and South of the country. The open grazing acts of Fulani herdsmen are now outdated and should be phased out in Nigeria. We warn of future consequences of unchecked Fulani herdsmen attacks on innocent Nigerians.”

Perturbed by the herdsmen’s activities, the immediate past Enugu State House of Assembly led by Eugene Odoh, began public hearing on a bill to make provisions for the control of nomadic cattle rearing in the state, and which passed second reading.

Represented by the Leader of the House, Mr. Udo-Okoye of Awgu-North Constituency, the Speaker said: “Yes, it’s true that our women, both young and old, have been raped, maimed in their farmlands by cattle rearers in the state. These cattle rearers send their cows into the farmlands of our people where they destroy all their farm produce. They block the highways with their cattle, rob and kidnap our people.

They abduct them and keep them captives in the bush and demand for ransom. That is why as a House elected to serve, represent and make laws for the good governance of our people, we can no longer fold our arms and watch our people being killed and maimed.”

The bill provides for the establishment of grazing areas in each of the three senatorial zones of Enugu State and the nomadic cattle rearers shall ensure that the cattle are confined within the grazing areas as provided.” It further stipulated: “Any person who permits cattle to graze in an area not designated as grazing area in the state, shall be guilty of an offence and shall on conviction be liable to a six-month imprisonment or a fine of N100,000 or both.

“Cattle found grazing in an area not designated a grazing area in the state shall be impounded by the pound master or any other person duly authorized by the commissioner. Any cattle impounded under this law, which is not claimed within one week of the impounding shall be sold in accordance with auction law; the proceeds of the sale shall be deposited in the government revenue.”

And in Ebonyi State, reacting to the menace of the Fulani herdsmen, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Barr. Uchenna Orji condemned the illegal activities of cattle rearers in the state and called on them to be law abiding and avoid all forms of vices while carrying out their activities.

They should stop destroying peoples source of livelihood like farm land and attack on natives farmers/villages and rape. Respect for others should be encouraged. They should be checked and seek other modern ways to feed their cows. Wearing animal Skin cloth is an aged longed tradition.......but these days people now wear modern clothes...........they should not remain nomadic because its an aged old tradition.....is like telling a farmer never to engage in mechanised farming because using hoes and cutlass is an old tradition and should be maintained.....we cannot move forward as a nation with such backward mentality.

Whether such intervention would permanently address the issue surely is a different matter. But the issue of Biafra has been a recurring decimal for a long time. The igbos are technically gifted. Why don't they use that and reinvest in themselves. Become the nation's great, rather than dividing the nation which might lead to the lost of lives. The past still haunts, what will the future then hold.

It's not a must to live together. Nigeria can survive without Igbos/yoruba/hausa, and Igbos/yoruba/hausa can survive without Nigeria. We have been trying to make Nigeria work for over 55 years, and it's simply not working.

We simply have to try something new rather than hoping the same approach will someday work. I envision a near future where those, having similar ideologies and having agreed to live together, do so in their own nation without let or hindrance.

The sooner we start facing this reality the better for all of us. Else one day, pent up anger and frustration will come to the fore like a volcanic eruption, and it might be too late to salvage anything of note.

Don't kid yourself you can salvage this country built on such faulty foundation. The moment the oil runs out, there wont be any need for any of the oil producing parts of the country. The Ijaws will simply be reminded that they contribute nothing more, and Igbo will be told how their land is erosion ravaged among others. Yorubas will remind everyone who cares to listen that they are no longer ready to accommodate non-indigenes in Lagos, the commercial nerve of the country, and will move to reassert control. The Hausa/Fulani will simply use their 'numbers' to get whatever they believe they need, and also resort to mining other minerals. Those who didn't get much from their oil will rue their shortsightedness. Everyone will be in mad rush to re-adjust, and consequently the country will disintegrate.

The best time to re-negotiate the country is NOW. The structure will need to be change such that everyone will know why they are part of Nigeria and whether they want to continue being part, and at what cost. Anyone who want to make something meaningful of Nigeria base on the current structure is not a good student of history. Nigeria, based on the current structure, is doomed to fail. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. We are not ideologically compatible; we are destined to be several great nations, rather than a bumbling, retardedd giant!

It best now to initiate a controlled dismantling exercise, as the alternative is a chaotic implosion with possible attendant catastrophic human and material cost of the next generation or beyond!

Having lost out in the scheme of things in Nigeria, IGBOS could go to any length to see that Yorubas and Northerners are at each other throats by orchestrating Falae' kidnap so as to set Yorubas against Hausas/Fulanis.

Yoruba May Pull Out Of Nigerian Union, Gen Adebayo,others Speak At Ibadan Summit

Some leaders today in Ibadan warned that the Yoruba will reconsider her membership of the Nigerian federation if the cultural and political marginalization continues unabated. The summit is not impressed by the slogan of renaissance renting the air, saying that the country has merely slid into the firm grip of another self-serving ethnic cabal intent on pinning the country down in her historic state of control my vested interests.
Presided over by former Governor of the Western Region, General Adeyinka Adebayo the summit warn that the Yoruba will no longer tolerate the sustenance of the country’s garrison structure which they claim undermine self actualization of the people of the South West.
Irohinodua correspondent reports that the summit said failure to restructure Nigeria using the 2014 confab report might force the Yoruba people to review her place in a political arrangement that cannot guarantee the protection of her citizens. Factional leaders of the Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Dr Fredrick Faseun and Otunba Gani Adams were unanimous in saying that the time to “leave Nigeria” and assert the sovereignty of the Yoruba people is now.
The summit strongly condemned what it described as the “invasion and killing of people in Yoruba territories” by the Fulani herdsmen. The summit held in the House of Chiefs Section of the Parliament Building of the Oyo State Secretariat with the theme “National Insecurity and the Menace of Fulani Herdsmen in Yorubaland.” The participants also decried the continued oppression of the Yoruba in their homeland by armed Fulani herdsmen.
The summit cite incessant cases of rape, destruction of economic plants that form the bedrock of the livelihood of locals, the armed violence unleashed by the nomads coupled with the consequent cultural disequilibrium the displacement of people from crisis-ridden Northern Nigeria have brought to communities in Yorubaland adding that subsequent governments in Nigeria have come into power waving slogans that end up leaving the country worse than they met it.
They demanded an immediate end to lawless nomadic activities in the South West warning that any community who cannot establish ranches for their flock should retreat from Yoruba territories. “The Yoruba people are no longer ready to tolerate mindless encroachment on their means of livelihood by any ungrateful tenants”, the gathering stated as part of its resolutions. The summit appear to be a mixture of Yoruba nationalists who have remained steadfast for ages and a sizeable flavour of people who worked for the ousted former President Goodluck Jonathan, leaving the possible impression that the summit has an iota of the usual sharp ideological and sometimes raucous divisions that have characterized Yoruba internal politics since independence.
Some observers think the Yoruba supporters of the ousted President Jonathan are anxious to seek relevance in a new environment that appears to have pushed them into the back bench of anomie. But the Afenifere spokesperson, Mr Yinka Odumakin said his group will always defend the objective interests of the Yoruba people. An official of the Oodua Liberation Movement, (OLM) Mr Popoola Ajayi said though the supporters of the ousted President Jonathan were prominent at the summit, the “reality is that many Yoruba people are disillusioned about the state of affairs in Nigeria and patience is running out.” He said after working for the emergence of President Mohammadu Buhari, the Yoruba people are “desperate to know if the alignment with the Fulani would lead to the restructuring of Nigeria and create political and economic freedom for the Yoruba” adding that the recent appointments by the President undermines the regime’s integrity.
He said “we the Yoruba people want to control our economy, security and natural resources including the sea ports.”
At the event were prominent Yoruba sons and daughters from the academia, politics and the Diaspora. The sponsors of the summit were Yoruba Council of Elders, (YCE), Oodua Foundation, Afenifere and the Yoruba Unity Forum, (YUF). Some of the participants included the Oyo State Deputy Governor, Otunba Moses Alake Adeyemo, who represented the State Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; Sola Ebiseni, who represented the Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, Pa Olanihun Ajayi, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Pa Supo Sonibare, Prof Banji Akintoye, Prof Toun Ogunseye, the first woman Professor in Nigeria. Others were Dr Fredrick Faseun, Otunba Gani Adams, Dr Kunle Olajide, Chief Shuaib Oyedokun and the former Military governor of Lagos State, Brig-Gen Raji Rasaki among many others. The Afenifere Renewal Group, (ARG) and many other Pan-Yoruba groups were however absent at the summit.

Barely two weeks after some fulani herdsmen attacked and kidnapped the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Chief Olu Falae, some herdsmen have again destroyed the same farmland.

The farm Manager Bruno ‎Akhigbodemen conducted newsmen round the farm located at Ilado in Akure North Council area of Ondo State

Over one kilometer plantation of maize was destroyed during the invasion at about 2am on Monday.

‎Akhigbodemen said that the herdsmen arrived the farm with their cows and wrecked the havoc despite the horrible experience the workers and their boss had in the last two week sequel to their menace‎.

He pointed out that ‎effort by the guards to prevent the destruction of the farmland were rebuffed as they were threatened by the herdsmen until their cows grazed to their satisfaction.

The farm Manager said that the former Finance minister has reported the latest destruction to the state Police Command for necessary action.

Vanguard learnt that following the complaint by Chief Falae, some detectives from the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) ‎were immediately deployed to the farm on Monday.

They reportedly combed the neighboring villages for the suspects but they were unable to make any arrest.

Report had it that the search still continues as some detectives still keep vigil in the village.

It was gathered that the police authority has invited leaders of the herdsmen in the state who stood surety for those that were arrested and released during the last invasion when over N500, 000 worth of farm products were destroyed.

‎Akhigbodemen described the destruction of the farm last week sunday as devastating.

He appealed to the government and the security operatives to act decisively on the menace of the herdsmen.

Chief Falae could not be reached for comment on the destruction of his farmland which is coming after his kidnapped and payment of N5m ransom to free him from his abductors.

It would be recalled that the former Minister for Finance has been having issues with the fulani herdsmen ‎whose cows have on several occasions destroyed his farmland.

He is billed to travel abroad this weekend for medical treatment after his horrifying experience which he described as ” hell”.

The latest destruction according to findings is the fifth within two months.

Before his kidnap barely two weeks ago, two fulani herdsmen were arrested and detained for destroying over N500,000 worth of farm products on the farm.

They were released after some of their leaders wrote an undertaker that they would pay compensation and would not encroach on the farm again.

Barely three weeks after the episode, Chief Falae was abducted by some gun wielding Fulani herdsmen on the same farmland and was released after 72 hours.

No fewer than three policemen have been deployed to his Oba Ile residence since his kidnap last month.

Contacted on the Sunday invasion and destruction of the farm by the Fulani herdsmen, the Police Image Maker Femi Joseph said that he is not aware of the incident.

Joseph was recently posted to the state and made the Command spokesman last week.
