I got to germany on Tuesday morning and It has been an awesome experience in this small, quiet and beautiful city of koblenz. Got to the airport like 4hrs before my flight departure and our Nigeria immigration ppl went thru my baggages and stylishly ask for something as always but I stood my ground dat I have no Kolanut to give dem, in fact I politely told him I'm a student and he should even be the one giving me something... Well, they didn't ask for any unusual documents eventhough I've everything packaged in an envelope and I was very confident. I went thru Lufthansa nd for those still scared of flying Lufthansa, mehn Ure missing big.First, I got a return ticket on Lufthansa for less dan 180k which is a nice bargain. I got an info from my indian buddy yesterday dat lufthansa even have special prices for students, I'll brief the house as soon as I get more info. I had my laptop bag ,a carry-on bag, and two boxes... So aside ur laptop bag, u can still carry 23*2 nd 8kg carry-on all equals 54kg excluding ur laptop bag. Ur laptop bag is seen as personal item but not weighed. Lufthansa are very strict with their rules so don't exceed the specified weights. It was a very smooth ride with Lufthansa nd dey're always ahead of time, we arrived at frankfurt almost an hour b4 schedule, interesting... I was able to call my ppl @home immediately I disembark from d plane, dis is made possible by the wakanow travel SIM preloaded with $20 all @ just 4500 from d wakanow website... Not an advert o but I've been calling non stop since I arrive with d UK/US line while I awaits my lyca SIM delivery. My Indian study buddy was waiting at the train station to pick me up and immediately took me to McDonald for a hot lunch and I can tell u It's very nice nd interesting wen Uve someone taking u around here,my advice, always contact ur international office ahead of ur trip, mine was arranged more dan a month b4 my trip, it was even more consoling dat she's more dan a year ahead of me in my masters program and already putting me thru some of d courses even b4 lectures starts fully. Thanks to obiwannn, I came to germany armed with my internet cable and have been blazing since den non-stop. For those coming soon, Pls get a small router for Wi-Fi connection for ur fones and other gadgets, I had to grin wen I was asked to pay 35 euros for a router dat I'm sure will go for less dan 3k in naija. And also don't forget Ur two-round mouth travel adapter and also an extension box. And for all those still scared of coming to koblenz,I've good news for U, d semester ticket dat only covers koblenz before now has been reviewed and now covers not just koblenz but Cologne and mainz... I'm looking forward to welcoming more nigerians here soon, in the meantime I seem to be the only african in dis Uni nd wish to change dat soon... I'll always be here to give help to those dat need help... Hmmmm, what did I forget to add... I'll post more as I remember... Signs out for now... Tschuss 25 Likes 1 Share |

Guitarlife:Ph.D course is not easy to get like that, if you want to do Ph.D in Germany you have to devote time for it and search for a supervisor and also funding, it not easy like masters application |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Nobody: 11:41pm On Oct 08, 2015 |
Rayhut:Thanks for ur time. Why is getting accepted for Ph.D difficult ? There are advertised Ph.D positions in some schools and I believe these slots are yet to be filled up . Whats the procedure for applying for them and will I still need to hunt for project supervisors for advertised Ph.D positions ? |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by Nobody: 12:44am On Oct 09, 2015 |
Guitarlife: Because of funding, Ph.D students are referred as researchers or junior scientists in Germany, studying Ph.D in Germany is regarded as job, so you need to be paid why studying, in most cases self funding is not acceptable, you have to source for organization that will fund you or the school will provide one for you. Getting a supervisor is another difficult part of it. Off course they need the slots to be filled up that is why they advertise. Yes, you need to hunt for supervisor first and get one in most cases before they will accept your application if it is individual Ph.d, if the Ph.d is structured one, that is the one students are divided into groups and assigned a supervisor, you don't need to hunt for a supervisor, but this type of PhD is not common in Germany, this type is common in UK, in Germany most PhD is individual mode of study hence the need for a hunt for a senior supervisor. Procedure for application is found on their website |

fynsake:You should be looking to your school for extension now. Also, someone appealed in German and got an instant reply to come for a rescheduled interview, I don't know if this was a coincidence or just as a result of the language the person used in the appeal. |
Re: General German Visa Enquiries Part 2 by obioraval(m): 6:40am On Oct 09, 2015 |
Guitarlife: Ok. You need to profile schools and start contacting faculty. Try TU Dresden, TU Ilmenau and OVGU magdeburg. They have got a good faculty in EE. Seeking Phd opportunities in Europe isn't easy. Also u could try out Uni of Pavia in Italy. I know 2 phd candidates there from Nigeria. Hope you have GRE and some published works. The Lord is our strength.... Germany also offers Structured Phd programs now. Follow Research in germany on facebook and visit their site. Congrats to Eke40seven on his Visa. His story should be inspirational to future visa hopefuls. 1 Like |

Guitarlife: In addition to what @Rayhut and @obioraval has said..... I will drop some websites for you to check phd positions because most times its advertised as a job. I think gettin a slot in engineering wont be difficult because most engineering grads go straight to industry after their MSc, to encoorage them to stay, its common to see reseach group paying 100% tv-l 13 for phd positions in engineering unlike natural science where we get 50% check these websites myscience.de indeed.de zeit.de http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/jobs?job_type=PhD+Studentship also use google search and check for research groups. I will suggest you use the key words electrotechnik reserach groups...then look for supervisors doing something related to power option and check for if they ve open positions..you caan also contact the reseearch group leader. sometimes an unsolicited application is also advised. you can use the format below for the unsolicited application or check if any is specified in any of the group you are applying to One pdf file containing CV german style..with passport, highlight your awards(its common in Germany for pple to do that) copies of the certificates and Master thesis, (Bachelor n masters cert with transcript) contact information of two referees ( you can replace it with letter of recommendation addressed to whom it may concern and also leave the contact of the referees..functional email and phone number.) statement of research interests.(letter of motivation..highlight your past research activities and link them to your passion and the intended position) List of publication if any ( peer review journals, conference talk nt attendance and poster symposiums fall under this category) All the best Man. N.B I will advise you download the indeed app and configure the app so every morning you can refresh it pr register or email alert 4 Likes 1 Share |

Halleluyah. i finally got my Visa yesterday! I really really appreciate the front runners in this forum for everything. I didn't know a thing about Germany's education system until i mistakenly clicked on the travel section last year. I was gonna click on 'politics' oo. I still thank God for that slip of hand or should i say 'slip of mouse' . I make bold to say I learnt everything that guided the process from securing admission to finally getting the visa from NAIRALAND. Big Shoutout to Every Active Contributor on the thread from part1 till date and the Biggest Shoutout to God Almighty for the success of it all. For those still expecting the a.m email..yours will come soon. I can only advice that you send a reminder at offpeak embassy periods between 1.30 - 2.30 pm. I had earlier sent my db confirmation and didn't get an invite until i resent on monday to get the a.m email 20 minutes later. Note that I composed a new email with 'BLOCKED ACCOUNT CONFIRMATION' as subject. Email went like... Dear Sir, For visa application................(quote visa application reference)................., Attached to this email is a copy of the blocked account confirmation as sent by db...... This is for those that only replied to the earlier email from embassy but haven't gotten the A.M email to pick up their visas. I hope this helps and pray that u get called up soon. * Even without the invite, Please send an enrollment extension notice if you have one to the embassy. That way, they are assured that your admission is still valid** 7 Likes 1 Share |

Disregard if it's been discussed before. Be aware that sharing (downloading or uploading) copyrighted files through peer-to-peer applications (like torrents), etc. in Germany is punishable by the payment of a sizeable amount of fine. You'll receive a warning letter asking you to pay the fine, and if you ignore it, you'll be required to appear in court. If you have a way of hiding your IP address, you may not get caught, but... So torrents especially, careful. 1 Like |

number13:I think there's a workaround. Like me for example, the only reason why I would want to torrent would be to download softwares for school. Every other thing can be streamed. The only exceexception being pc games. Well if I really need to torrent that badly, I'd just get guys in 9ja who have unlimited Internet, have them torrent download the file I need and upload same to a cloud service from where I can safely download. Isn't efficient but should work. 2 Likes 1 Share |
