As usual, FAAC publishes monthly allocations made to all tiers of government on the dailies of some national newspapers. I was going through the list of the disbursements made to local government and I was quite confused. I couldn’t understand why the model or formula used in allocating funds to local governments was still based on population figures collated 10 years ago.

For example, Alimosho received the highest allocation from the federal government (452 m). Why would Alimosho receive almost five hundred million naira, which is over a hundred percent higher than the standard or mean amounts received by other local governments? Also, why should Alimosho receive a higher allocation than Ikeja? Why should Ikorodu receive over a hundred percent of what a bigger local government like Obio/Akpor receives?

The model currently being used to allocate funds to local governments is totally anachronistic and redundant. The populations of these local governments have changed rapidly over the last 10 years. Maidugri collected 170 million from the government, while Obio/Akpor received 150 million. The population of maidugri is no longer the same as it was 10 years ago due to terrorism and insurgency. Even in Rivers State, PHALGA collected 20 million naira more than Obio/Akpor although Obio/Akpor is currently more populated than PHALGA.

The current revenue allocation method breeds corruption, redundancy and inefficiency. It is totally unacceptable and need to be changed.


On another note, how are these guys supposed to develop their respective areas with such meagre amounts of money?

Whoa! That's quite an exorbitant amount. However even if the FG gives LGAs sufficient allocation for development, it will still be embezzled. I wish all tiers of government were as effective as they ought to be, our problems would have reduced drastically.

First things first. KILL CORRUPTION and CHECKMATE ALL LOOPHOLES then everything other thing will fall into place.

Local governments in Lagos state deserve more than that, even I think we should support the deduction from what is due to some local government of some state that have larger number of her citizen residing in Lagos.
Lagos needs special status plus special treatment to be able to solve the problems of overpopulation created by the outsiders

Lagos state needs what kind of special status .,what exactly are we talking about and with whose money cos obviously if an extra naira is added to Lagos, some other state will have theirs reduced.

State governments are the ONLY accountable tier of government in Nigeria.
This is because they are easily recognized by the people in the state that demand action.

The Federal government is too removed from the people and too powerful to be held accountable for anything.
The local government are too obscure for any one to even know the name of the LGA chairman. So they just squander whatever they are given.

if you observe carefully, 90% of the developments in nigeria over the last 10 years has really come from the state governments. From Jigawa to Kano to Lagos to Akwa Ibom to Enugu, it is all a state governments affair. yet, they recieve only 25% of the national federation allocation leaving the FG and the LGAs with a whopping 75%.
Suffice to say 75% of our federation account allocation is simply wasted or squandered.

Moreover, if you retake a census of the two LGAs today, you will find out that Alimosho is not more populated than Obio/Akpor.

Yeah I knew one of you would soon come here talking about Tinubu. It's like you see the man in your dreams Tinubu is not the reason you are frustrated ,how about you spend the time you spend discussing Tinubu daily on talking about your own leaders and the problems in your region instead of hyperventilating over Tinubu
