kendrick9: I agree 100% with the voodoo part. Its almost as if the writers are from a different Yoruba society from the one I come from in Nigeria, because the average Yoruba man is not as fetish as they always portray in Yoruba films (e.g, have a problem and immediately start seeking a fetish solution to it). As a matter of fact, the real life Yoruba society is no different from any other part of the country when it comes to being fetish. I however disagree with the substance part. If you understand or speak Yoruba well, you will quite agree with me there are a lot of Yoruba movies with very good story-lines(the execution may be poor but the plots are usually deep), of course there are also a lot of trashy ones that don't just make any sense. The language barrier aside, Yoruba movies are easily the most watched indigenous language movies in Nigeria and account for a substantial part of the whole Nollywood thingy, unstructured as that is. If you are to, however, do a research to find out the better movies between the regular Nollywood movies (the old Nollywood ones not the new ones made for the cinema) and Yoruba movies, you may be shocked to find out the Yoruba movies are actually better in terms of production and what not. 11 Likes 1 Share |

frakdon: My point is, igbo producers made them popular when they we're featuring them in nollywood films. These guys became popular and rich then started yorubawood championed by jide kosoko due to the tussle in leadership of actors guild. This is known fact 4 Likes |

funkiebully: Just a little clarification. Pete Edoche acted for television (NTA) and not for the cinema. There's a huge difference. What Pete Edoche did in Things Fall Apart is akin to an actor in any of the seasonal/series movies that abound nowadays. The cinema in Nigeria truly predates home videos/Nollywood. However, Pete Edoche's performance in Things Fall Apart is beyond extraordinary. That easily cements his place in the upper echelons of 'greats' in the acting industry as a whole. It was and is still a classic performance. 6 Likes 1 Share |

funkiebully:you are the trying to rewrite history. The firm industry has been in existence before you born. I finished primary school in 1980 and my brothers do take me to national theater and watch Olu Jacob and his wife acting stage film . Also Ogunde , Baba sala and Ade love (kunle Afolayan's father) did many of their movies before nollywood came in. our Televisions were showing movies by many yoruba film groups like Ojo Ladipo (Aluwe, ogs bello, iya awero, jide kosoko etc) baba sala (it was one of his movies that featured clara chukwura and sinna Peters when they gave birth to a son. There so many so film groups before nollywood was cpined by your igbo brothers. I want to believe you wrote as your age can take. Nollywood never brought any of thos actor to limelight. 8 Likes 1 Share |

There is no discussion about the originators of movies in Nigeria. History makes it LOUD and CLEAR - its the YORUBAS. Any attempt to muddle the issue is dumb and a waste of time. So please give it to the amala-eaters when they deserve it. I have no dogs in this fights. And they akpu-eaters should stop making noise here. 8 Likes |

DikeOha882: Allow them to confuse themselves. One was even talking of going to national theatre to watch stage play. We know when VHS came out, and who started mass producing films. There were ichoku, new madquerade, things fall apart, willy willy etc shown on NTA then. 5 Likes |
