@ dkby, and musco4me, easier said than done.
I can relate with musco4me, because when you change hands frequently, get ready to pay the attendant shortages on the machines.
Caveat emptor.
A word is enough for the wise.

@Smasher1 this is very much practice especially for branch staff (Operations), change of hands comes with thorough hand over ofcourse and the machines MOST balance before taking/handing over in the case of Atm custodians. This is also applicable to other units such as Funds transfer, Customer Service and the rest, you will need to balance the GLs

My brother, when I was Atm custodian, no be small fight with my A.M especially when Channel monitoring send that yeye report, so I ensured job rotation by constantly reminding the officer responsible to do the rotation or else I escalate. The truth is, I had my exit plan right from the day I joined the bank. E go better

This isn't manufacturing. Ure in for a different experience. Muscoe gave u an hint don't take it as a syllabus. My 2 cents

Everyone always says the fire is hotter on his side. My point is this: at some point in the day or night the bank completely shuts down (aside from e-channels). In manufacturing, a shutdown is a No-No. All over Oluyole, plants are in full operation 24/7 (even Christmas and New year days still have semi full operations). At the end of the day a bank is a corporate environment working at speed and under intense pressure. The aim is to have minimal downtime. Manufacturing is the same. And the ATM custodian role I mentioned is not to different from what I currently do unless I haven't gotten the job description well

Bro! Take it easy. From your ill-thought suggestion to present bank workers to secure larger quantity of loan from their banks to give them cover from being retrenched easily (a professional banker present/ex ought to know better that no bank will genuinely give you loan above your severance package without supporting collateral) to your lame claim of owning a plot of land you bought for 500k that now has worth estimate of 25m (I don't care when you buy the imaginary land since you said worked in the bank btw late 90's to earlier 2000), I am in doubt if truly you have experienced bank work.

Whether l buy or l nor buy, how does that affect your own poverty level? ..or did l write my post so you can believe me, when you dont even know me in real life?

I never said the loan will prevent them from being retrenched but l said the bank will "think twice" or have you not heard of people who got retrenched and the bank has to forgo what was owed after deducting all they could from their severance pay?
In some cases, severance is not planned for by the bank and when events like "restructuring" makes it impossible, they just have to close their eyes and live with it.

infact, why am l even explaining to an imp like you?

Am a banker but i hate banking work so much. U cant even have time for urself and ur family. I never wanted to be a banker but unemployment pushed me to banking because i needed to survive. Am still thinking of other biz i will engage myself in and also lookn for a non banking job. Within the 2 and half years in bankn, i hv worked as funds transfer officer, customer service officer, headteller/Atm custodian. Keeping watch over the atm is the most stressful thing u can do if ur bank is a leading bank in nigeria and if ur branch has 3 to 6 atms that need serious attention due to so much traffics on them. I leave my house b4 6.30am so that i attend to atms and put them in order b4 8am wen monitoring starts. I still go home late cos u still have to wait till 6pm wen monitoring ends. Banking is not a job ooooooo. No weekend for u, no public holidays, u just work! Work! Work! I hate bankn and planning to quit very soon.

Nice one.
I resign november last year from Guaranty trust bank when I got a federal govt job.
My little advice to bankers in the house is that try not to limit yourself in banking job. You will be apraise when you are performing but when you make a single mistake, one might be sack. I have 6 years experience in banking industry. The connected ones will be getting promoted while the hardworking ones will be working for them.
Let me rest my case here so that I won't expose many banking secret.

We are miles apart in real life but its not necessary l go into this competition with you, I nor get your time Bro.

Why would you tackle someone "online" about who he or she is, when you dont even have the privilege to "confirm" whether what they say is true or not? Is that not a futile and foolish exercise ........... or is it the part that l bought land in 1997 for less than 500K and its worth over 25M today, in Lekki area.... that is your headache? How that affects you is what still puzzles me grin grin

Look. dont get dampened by what you have read here.

For you to get a little job satisfaction, you have to be in the right frame of mind.

Yes it is stressful but let your attitude be that of someone determined to scale a Mountain - A CHALLENGE!
I will be lying if l say l did not enjoy the challenge when l was there.... and the money was good too.
Each time l solved a knotty issue, l was praised and was the envy of colleagues and that is more than all the money in the world.

Start the job with the determination to "make an impact", even if its just within your Dept/branch such that if you were to be on annual leave, let someone says "Aaah, how l wish he was around".

Quite a number of times,l have been recalled from leave (ofcourse, they have to buy the leave back! grin ) because they need my attention.
When l go on leave they insist l leave a forwarding address on phone number (GSM never dey rampant that time!) or make sure l attend to my Email just in-case.

So Bro, I want you to be excited at starting that job..... there are many who will jump at the opportunity.
Just use the inflow properly.

I tell you the way you have described this atm custodian so I'm now tempted to apply for the opening at the south African bank operating in Nigeria.

I used to work in Supply chain for a firm that provided IT services to a big manufacturing multinational. Banks own still good at least operations completely ceases for a few hours na. Manufacturing is 24hours non stop operations. I've been called at 2am to resolve a problem having left the office at 11pm when my official closing time was 5pm. I've been in a different state and had a 2hour phone call to resolve a bottle neck with emails flying from US to Switzerland with my name as the reason for delays in d supply chain. It got to a point I no dey fear feedback (really brutal tongue lashing) from my immediate manager and his immediate manager. Grew a thick skin so if na just jam or cash out that one na play. I enjoyed the pressure and the pace. Thrived on it sef.

Funny thing is when interviewing for the job we all swiftly answer Yes! when asked "Can you work under pressure?" even claiming to be pressure cooker sef
looool @pressure cook.

Hmmm..nice thread.

Well, I was a banker and I worked at UBA house marina, Risk management, compliance group/Unit. Well I left there few months back and got another job that I think suits me and lesser stress..

Buh I goTta say it wasn't easy...imagine moving from Ogba to the island on a daily basis, getting stucked on 3rd mainland almost everynight, Though I earn little but tried to dress nice....but I really did enjoy my time there as I met with alotta of people considering d fact that its a global organization. I am happy where I am nw and working in a bank was worth the experience..

This is an interesting thread. I worked for Intercontinental bank for 4 years before the merger(which was really an acquisition). Things fell apart and I knew I had to leave. I had been a marketer with short stints in customer service. Never promoted, not knowing enough people, I felt something was missing in my life.
When I resigned I thought I will die. I found out the bank is like a seminary where you are shielded from the real life. You discover all the people you call friends are liars basking in the life you had as a banker. I was disillusioned.
Now I started some businesses which didnt pay me. I was on a downward spiral.
Then i took a bold step, I started studying Chinese language. It was unconventional, at a point I thought I was mad.
Three years on I have God to thank, from free lance interpretation I have travelled outside the shores of Nigerian broadening my knowledge ang perfecting my craft. At various points I have tripled my monthly earning in the bank.

What am saying in essence is simple. Not all will learn Chinese(I pray all wont, I don't want the industry crowded so my value will keep skyrocketting) I just want bankers to know that they are in the most insecure profession in Nigeria. You dont need to commit an offence to lose ur job. You simply come to work and you can't log on. So don't relax always be on the lookout for greener pastures. Many of my dedicated colleagues were sacked without notice. Also once u take that step be determined, you wont die.
To aspiring bankers just know you will not develop in a bank, theres no time for personal development, they will take your youth from u, before u know it you are old. Also if its Access bank be prepared to take a loan u don't want to buy a car you don't need to live a life that's not yours in exchange for your youth that you cant recover.

My greatest gain in leaving bank job is that I have a skill. I can never be sacked my only worry is to keep my brain healthy and never lose my voice.
