I think the dark spaces are probably deserts and Savannah because Africa is the largest continent. Lower west Africa and central Africa have the largest population concentration

It depends of what countries you put in your central Africa ..but I think central is the most underpopulated or sparsely populated region on our continent .
The zone with the largest population are East Africa then west Africa

You are boring. Who brings intellgient conversation to a nairaland thread on space? Go away, evil scientist.. angry

wink

I know that is a complement (i hope) but the message it carries about the mental development (or the drive for it) of most nairalanders vis-a-vis, the topics and discussions that interest them is sad.

This guy below captures it in a post on a different thread .

PS: The site you suggested that the Ezeagu add did not load .I wanted to see the basis for your claim that Nigeria was doing worse comparatively than the picture suggested.

.......... it amazes me how contents like this gets little FP attention and members barely even read it. But I know if it was Tonto frying Tomatoes, people will be falling over each other to come and read it. It is very sad.

Fake pix. How were they able to get the map of Africa correctly at night? Besides depiction of electricity at South Africa is far below what's obtainable there. Only Gauteng area and capetown and tiny dots by the coast. Its totally untrue. Again I say; fake pix.

Do you know what a satellite is?

Those pictures are enhanced(to a minor extent) images obtained from spectral emissions infrared and others of mostly lighting systems .
If you stand far behind or at some adjacent angle to someone pointing a unidirectional light source(torchlight) , you would see the illumination produce by that source even if it was directed well away from you.
Lets not talk about unguided light sources( fires, open streetlights etc).
If your punny eyes can do that how much do you think engineered optical systems designed to read the characters on a black board (facing up in the open) can do?
Agreed. But do those boundary lines exist in reality

A major reason for the disparity with Europe is that the top half of Africa comprises almost entirely the SAHARA DESERT which, in case you dunderheads don't realise, is LARGELY UNINHABITED, while the lower central mass of the continent comprises the largely uninhabited, impenetrable central African forests of the CONGO regions and co.

GO LEARN SOME GEOGRAPHY, DOLTS!!

There are a billion + people in Africa and over 100 million in Nigeria, how many are there in Europe?

I know of course. Why such a question? I'm very good in geography and I'm science inclined. Do you care to educate me on how the satellite was able to get a clear cut map of Africa in pitch darkness? If it was infrared I will know.

"This new global view and animation of Earth's city lights is a composite assembled from data acquired by the Suomi NPP satellite. The data was acquired over nine days in April 2012 and 13 days in October 2012. It took 312 orbits to get a clear shot of every parcel of Earth's land surface and islands. This new data was then mapped over existing Blue Marble imagery of Earth to provide a realistic view of the planet."

Southern and Eastern Africa are the least populated with lots of beautiful nature. For example,Namibia and Botswana are each the same size as Nigeria, but their population are 2 million and 1.7 million , South Africa's is about 45 million due to mass immigration .
For those who like cloudless blue skies and less humid atmosphere, Southern Africa ,eastern Africa and Northern Africa have the most appealing climate (Subtropical or Mediterranean) in Africa. West and Central African climate are humid rain forest tropical.

Ok thanks for your effort at educating me on this. When someone wants to convince you its either he tells you the truth or he uses a lot of jargons and out of the normal vocabulary to confuse you. Is it not the same Nasa who provided the pix of a flowing flag on the moon as a sign of how they're the first to get there? A controversial pix till today? Let me just keep quiet for silence sake. If it was in the day time then I agree but night time

Anyone whose been on a plane between Europe and Africa or even Nigeria and South Africa can confirm this picture. It's not really a secret that most of Africa is constantly in darkness. Plus what gain is it for NASA to make Africa 'darker' than it really is?

I do not doubt that Africa would be darker than other continents as in reality she lacks infrastructures in majority of her constituents but the degree of darkness is overemphasized. Take a closer look at south Africa and you will understand what I'm saying. How comes its only the Gauteng and capetown areas that is bright? Don't you see that its not a correct reflection of what is on ground? That has been my bone of contention. Yes Africa was suppose to be darker comparatively but that pix doesn't tell the exact story. It was fixed for a purpose.

That's where the population of South Africa is concentrate, the density map shows that. There are only 55 million people in South Africa and 12 million people live in Gauteng.

You try i ,sometimes like this occasion, lose patience when i have to explain /convince someone about facts that are well obvious and indisputable.
Its more galling when those facts are disputed on the basis of nothing more than (i don know empty pride? and) hot air.

Nwanne SA is well electrified. With 9provinces and each having at least a big city the lights should be dotted and distributed all over. Have you heard of bloemfontein in the free states just between Gauteng and KZN? What about the North western cities and the northern cape cities? The brightness there by durban is only the ethekwini areas. What about the other cities. Let's see Kenya. Total pitch darkness. Angola? I still stand by my doubts. Once again thanks for your time. One big dislike for you. I've learnt to criticize most of what is being said about Africa by the caucasians. Majority of what they say and show about us are false even if tiny fragments might be true. Don't always be in a haste to lose your temper, you might as well lose your respect.

This is the density map of SA. Those lights follow the most populated areas.
