If I had sued for damages, mismanagement and negligence of duty, I would have gotten millions of Naira compensation from that careless hospital.

Anyway, I have moved-on as a good Christian and leave all matters to the creator.

Actually, lack of medical insight and knowing only books and no practical based knowledge was the major reason I changed my mind from studying medicine in Nigeria. I work with some doctors and they are just empty headed and then I imagine what happens to the patients who entrust their lives into their hands. I actually don't believe that everyone goes at their time sh*t cos some doctors actually hasten people's time. The only thing worse than an empty headed doctor is an empty headed doctor with pride and ego. RIP to the dead, I told a doctor to better go and learn trade if he knows he will grumble at every call. It's not by force to be one.

Only Almighty God JEHOVAH wiil save us in Nigeria. I keep on telling people that corruption is not what is destroying Nigeria, but incompetence and ignorance. Many doctors parading themselves in hospitals in Nigeria are not certified medical doctors and the Nigerian Medical Council has failed to investigate the medical staff working at many clinics and hospitals to verify their professional qualifications. Dr. Chris Ngige should be the new Minister of Health and he will overhaul the health care and medicare system in Nigeria. We need Cuban medical doctors in Nigeria.

@bolded,

how i wish this is what will happen, but you and me know that it will be delayed in court and eventually turn out negative(probably). because the nature of our country. Look at the intonation of that letter, you should know that this poor woman can get depressed easily and that is not good for her health having gone through all that. She needs encouragement now. she needs to be strong unless she will injure her self.
omooba969:

I don't think you had a proper thought process before you put that up there...what do you mean by that?

The problem with Nigeria is that most people don't value human life & it shows in how we handle it. In a sane society those doctors would definitely find themselves in a very hot soup, not to talk of raging lawsuit that will finish them off while they face substantial damages.

The way forward is too have strong institutions e.g regulatory bodies that would keep an eye on these ediots called doctors, only then shall we begin to see improvements. cool

May his soul rest in peace. May God give you the fortitude to bear thia irreparable loss. I can imagine the pain of losing such a promising young man.

To the doctors, both young and old, you can be that link between the life and death of that helpless patient before you and your action at that point in time determines to a large extent tge result you get.

How can you think of or make a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction (in this case ib a CKD patient who obviously and not surprising has hypertension) and you are thinking of EXFORGE first, and forgetting the 3 tubes you were taught in the medical school...
1...NG TUBE (which in this case was all that was needed to this patient who choked to death via aspiration...chemical pneumonitis...it is a killer)
2...IV LINE (which the young doctor was having difficulty getting...he may not have passed an NG TUBE before)
3....URETHRAL CATHETER...to monitor his urine output...being a renal transplant patient.

These three could have gone a long way to save this man's life. I dont know the cause of his death but from the narrative above it is obvious.

l will not blame the young doctor because what happened to him (Dr Kiewv) happend to almost everyone at their infancy years in the profession. l put the blame on both Drs Balogun and Fadiran who knew what was at stake but never bordered to tell the young doctor to pass an NG TUBE (except if they did)...and to tell a patient with suspected intestinal obstruction to go home (after giving pain relief) is unheard of.

Doctors always do your best to save that fellow lying helplessly before you.

To Ma'am please take heart!!

My submission....

1) I am a medical doctor, so I have every right to comment here

2) Dr kevwe (or whatever his name was) was very likely a house officer, the most junior doctor in the cadre. I'm sure he was a freebie, fresh out of .medical school. But sad to say, he is a very stupid person and his license needs re-evaluation. Because when someone is vomiting and complaining of pains, didn't he know that the next thing is to resuscitate and give fluids, then call the surgeon on call for a quick ex-lap to relieve the obstruction??

3) the next senior doctor on call (likely Dr balogun) is very lazy, and can never make it if he continues this way. Your junior doctor called you for an emergency, and you were there giving silly instructions "call this, call that" even with the Lagos traffic, one hour would still save a life....

4) the anaesthetist did his job, he was just informed late, by the two stupid docs balogun and kevwe....

5) that hospital needs a overhaul, a panel must be set-up to investigate the matter, and prices have to be paid, at least to set an example to other lazy and negligent docs....

In conclusion, being a doctor is no child's play, the health sector in Nigeria is in shambles, but Mrs chazB has to move on, her husband is gone, nothing can bring him back....

Thank you

So that was how we lost Uncle ChazB. I no longer look forward to #Sharing life Issue with ChazB#,it's no longer the same. It's all good,he is in a better place now.God bless all the good doctors who put in all their effort to save lives. However those who neglect others people lives, may karma visit them. I support Nigerians suing negligent doctors because without people getting punished for wrongs, impunity thrives.

Just a thought though. Does it mean patients do not have their medical history available at the press of a button at a facility like St. Nicholas. Even the facility I use which is by no means the hype of SNH has me and my history at the tap of a button accessible to any doctor's system within the facility. Not hard copy files. Locked up somewhere.

NO ONE PRAY FOR LOVED ONE TO DIE PREMATURELY DUE TO CARELESSNESS AND NEGLECT BUT ALSO KNOW THAT IN NIGERIA, SHE MIGHT NOT GET ANY SINGLE THING FROM THE HOSPITAL DUE TO THE NATURE OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM. THAT'S WHY I SAID SHE SHOULD MOVE ON UNLESS SHE CAN INJURE HER SELF.

You have no right to tell her to move on.

Its really sad when a loved one loses his or her life to avoidable circumstances. imagine the doctor on duty taking instructions via phone that clearly shows his inability to handle the situation. What stopped the consultant from carrying himself down to the hospital instead of sitting back wherever he was to give instructions when it was obvious that the doctor on duty couldn't handle the situation on ground.
Human life is valuable and should be treated so. a family has been deprived of their father, breadwinner, husband, son, friend as a result of trial and error, trial and success. I think the widow should sue the hospital this rubbish has to stop...May God console them.

Part of Nigeria's problem is the dearth of qualified consultants. You may be shocked that as the time that call was being made, the consultant is not in Lagos and there was no way he could have been there on time to save the man. Many of them run many practices together across the country.

That is why she said the husband's kidney transplant was done. Since they performed the surgery, they are the only people fit to follow up on the case. One of the problem in this case was that the doctor on duty did not even has access to the man's file which has been locked up in another doctor's office. Many things sadly went wrong for the man. It is an institutional problem, the hospital needs procedural overhaul if they are to perform their duty well. How do you lock up a case file in a doctor's office? I think that has to have been transferred back to record section of the hospital.
Exactly

I really don't see Dr Ikwe(?) Being negligent here. Save me the the slack. And tarnishing his image up and down the media is very stupid thing to do.

She shld sue the hospital and stop the libel. 1.5% of people living with ESRD dies even in the USA. The best cure is prevention

Dr Kevwe shouldn't have discharged him the night before.

Please, all in all, try to live a healthy life, even if you have to deprive yourself.

Nigerian Hospitals, even with state-of-the-art facilities cannot handle emergencies of this type, because we have few good hands.

angry For crying out loud the deceased should have been admitted to ICU following his previous diagnosis and condition before his unfortunate demise.

When a patient is nauseous or vomiting, let him or her till it subsides or stops. The last doc who came to administer NG tube came a little too late.

Well trained ICU nurses would have stabilized the patient pending the arrival of the doctors.

No doubt this was a medico legal hazard.

Truth is that we have not acquired the capacity to handle a lot of things we confront. MedicNigeria is one theatre. The patient was simply beyond them and until we raise our game by option or coercion many more lives will be needlessly lost.

Olori,

Thank you for your comment.

St. Nicolas Hospital Management need to be more proactive.

How do you explain having an inpatient who you know the medical history without you having all necessary medical facility in case of emergency or complication.

Transferring the patient to another facility with the 'supposed' equipment which is neither available or is currently being use and St. Nicolas did not professionally inquired from their 3rd party partner before making the deadly transfer.

Honestly, we leave some certain matters to God due to certain cordial relationship with some individuals, I think we Nigerians need to CHANGE our approach to professional negligence.

No I disagree.
None of the steps taken were in medical order.
You don't discharge a patient in that particular state home. The best they should have done is keep him in the hospital or send him to another hospital if they had no bed space.
No diagnosis was made on him. So what were they hoping to treat.
No lab test was done. Considering that he is post kidney transplant, the first thing should have been a blood chemistry test at least. An abdominal USG if available.

A junior doctor should have a senior doctor hanging around, just incase things get hairy. That case was beyond that guy.
Shït!!! They did nothing. They killed the man.
Okay ma'am...
They stabilized?yes.
History was taken?yes?
Of course, examination yes.

Who said an e/u or blood chemistry wasn't done and urea level was okay and the kidney was fine?

Treatment?obviously the dude was being cautious about Charles being a transplant patient.I believe he told him to come back after stabilization the next day or so.. We haven't heard the doctors part of the story..
Transplant patients are usually on immune supressors for life hence theirs immunity usually is impaired and care has to be taken even as to what they eat.

The doctor can not have told the man to go and not comeback if anything else is noticed..

I'm really sad too.

so the medic that saw the previous evening did not recognise uremic symptoms and discharged home...haba i beg to differ.
uraemia can manifest in any system... I wonder if they thought about that... It can come as abdominal pain, vomiting, loss of consciousness, etc till the heart shuts down from uraemia and other imbalances
and a transplanted kidney is insensate, it can get damaged without the carrier knowing
and any doctor can be mislead by it
Hope they documented well

Firstly..RIP to the dead.

Secondly .the man was a high risk patient hence the doctors were right to be cautious about medications.

Thirdly.. All the steps taken were medically in order

..even if he anesthesiologist wasnt needed till the man was critical. the radiologist wasn't needed until the necessary resuscitation was being done .

It's a very unfortunate situation.. But its giving the dog a bad name to hang it.. Nigeria is bad for all of us..imagine calling the anesthesiologist by 9pm and he leaves home immediately but because of traffic he arrives late then you blame him 'chai doctors don suffer sha..
I swear Nigerians are damn ungrateful ..Doctors are the very few coping with the poor system.

Well it's because she's well to do

Those steps were NOT in order! Read her post again. The anaesthesiologist was not called at 9pm. She took him back to the hospital in the morning. What medical intervention did they give him? A drip and an injection. Was that the way to treat his case? Don't forget that his wife said he was in pain! You doctors can be terrible! Trying to cover up for one another. angry

my take on this one is as follows:
Nigeria is just a country in disarray and only God knows when we will
start behaving like humans because its obvious we don't value human life!
most death that occurs in Nigeria are mostly avoidable death that are caused
by negligence on the part of our health practitioners as am typing now we can count
how many person are dying at d moment at both public and private health institution
all over the country right now due to negligence and we are always quick to leave
everything to the our creator and move on......so so sad!!!
to be frank how many nurse or doctor have ever been arrested or prosecuted
for negligence and their certificate revoked not to practice medicine till date in
Nigeria? do we have laws that checks the medical practices and its wrongdoing?
its until we have answers to these and other questions am sorry situation like chaz B's will
continue and we wont be able to help it!
