Actually, lack of medical insight and knowing only books and no practical based knowledge was the major reason I changed my mind from studying medicine in Nigeria. I work with some doctors and they are just empty headed and then I imagine what happens to the patients who entrust their lives into their hands. I actually don't believe that everyone goes at their time sh*t cos some doctors actually hasten people's time. The only thing worse than an empty headed doctor is an empty headed doctor with pride and ego. RIP to the dead, I told a doctor to better go and learn trade if he knows he will grumble at every call. It's not by force to be one.
stop hating if you couldn't make...learn to say the truth, you didn't change your mind, waec and jamb and post-ume changed it for you
We have a matter at hand that is different, and you come here talking crap about people struggling to make a difference
Things like this happen worldwide, so if you didn't read medicine as you said, quit commenting just to express your frustrations

I agree 100%. Our doctors still performs excellently well if you ask me....except too many ' exhaustive private practises' overshadows their commitments.

I have my unpalatable personal experience with St. Nicolas Hospital. angry

If I had sued for damages, mismanagement and negligence of duty, I would have gotten millions of Naira compensation from that careless hospital.

Anyway, I have moved-on as a good Christian and leave all matters to the creator.

Mr. Charles, continue to rest in peace, and may God grant your wife and family the fortitude to bear the loss of your untimely death in the hands of some careless medical practitioners in Nigeria. sad sad embarassed cry
You're a bad Christian..... You should have sued and gotten the millions to be donated for any cause you believe in.... At the same time make those dunderheaded doctors at St Nicholas sit up and probably prevent this particular death! Maybe we can say chazb's death is on your head...

Its really sad when a loved one loses his or her life to avoidable circumstances. imagine the doctor on duty taking instructions via phone that clearly shows his inability to handle the situation. What stopped the consultant from carrying himself down to the hospital instead of sitting back wherever he was to give instructions when it was obvious that the doctor on duty couldn't handle the situation on ground.
Human life is valuable and should be treated so. a family has been deprived of their father, breadwinner, husband, son, friend as a result of trial and error, trial and success. I think the widow should sue the hospital this rubbish has to stop...May God console them.

Actually yes you can, as long as there was a witness to every telephonically given directives.

Those steps were NOT in order! Read her post again. The anaesthesiologist was not called at 9pm. She took him back to the hospital in the morning. What medical intervention did they give him? A drip and an injection. Was that the way to treat his case? Don't forget that his wife said he was in pain! You doctors can be terrible! Trying to cover up for one another. angry

I am not trying to cover up.

This guy had a kidney transplant..see these transplant patients are on immunosuppressive drugs for life and their food and even drugs are to be specific.. Even aspirin you can take for pain is not taken by them else it may damage the kidney . I believe that's why kevwe was cautious not to give drugs..
He's just a medical officer
Besides,, most drugs these patients use can have interactions with other drugs causing more harm than good.

Agreed, their medication has to be supervised.....but you are still trying to cover up. The guy needed urgent surgical intervention, to save his life and for 3 hours after admission, the doctor was still fumbling, making calls and dragging his feet. Why was he even sent home the previous day instead of keeping him under medical observation??

ChelseaDr:
May his soul rest in peace. May God give you the fortitude to bear thia irreparable loss. I can imagine the pain of losing such a promising young man.

To the doctors, both young and old, you can be that link between the life and death of that helpless patient before you and your action at that point in time determines to a large extent tge result you get.

How can you think of or make a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction (in this case ib a CKD patient who obviously and not surprising has hypertension) and you are thinking of EXFORGE first, and forgetting the 3 tubes you were taught in the medical school...
1...NG TUBE (which in this case was all that was needed to this patient who choked to death via aspiration...chemical pneumonitis...it is a killer)
2...IV LINE (which the young doctor was having difficulty getting...he may not have passed an NG TUBE before)
3....URETHRAL CATHETER...to monitor his urine output...being a renal transplant patient.

These three could have gone a long way to save this man's life. I dont know the cause of his death but from the narrative above it is obvious.

l will not blame the young doctor because what happened to him (Dr Kiewv) happend to almost everyone at their infancy years in the profession. l put the blame on both Drs Balogun and Fadiran who knew what was at stake but never bordered to tell the young doctor to pass an NG TUBE (except if they did)...and to tell a patient with suspected intestinal obstruction to go home (after giving pain relief) is unheard of.

Doctors always do your best to save that fellow lying helplessly before you.

To Ma'am please take heart!!

Abeg, please share these lessons with your fellow medical doctors. Many of them are clueless and incompetent!

Just a thought though. Does it mean patients do not have their medical history available at the press of a button at a facility like St. Nicholas. Even the facility I use which is by no means the hype of SNH has me and my history at the tap of a button accessible to any doctor's system within the facility. Not hard copy files. Locked up somewhere.

I think this is more of an institutional failure.

Doctors should be careful, patients are begining to know their right. If you treasure your licence then do the right thing all the time no matter whose ox is gored.

I don't know who to blame for negligence. Dr Kewe who lack the experience to handle this situation or Dr Balogun who failed to show up having operated on the patient earlier on or should i just apportion the whole blame to Dr Fadiran the senior surgeon for total negligence of his life saving duty and his inability to report to duty when needed despite the fact there's a critical case at hand that demanded an urgent attention. What about the Radiologist who was nowhere to be found so as to ascertain what's going inside the patient.
Although sanctioning the hospital or revoking her licence to operate for the total negligence of her duty cannot bring the deceased back to life, let it serve as a deterant to other erring hospital personnel who place no value on patient's life.

Doc,
I believe there are so many. You need to see how well our people perform outside our shores. The major issue here is " commitment". .Factor in the rate at which we Naijas pursues money even at the detriment of our own health.

Not trying to hold brief for the senior surgeon but probable he was at a previous engagement somewhere and too exhausted.

The entire health sector, from medical school to laboratory technology colleges needs total overhauling.Let the big hammer descend from the very top Ministers, Commissioners,State directors and Coordinators of health, etc, all of us will toe the line accordingly in compliance.

Really? everyone has been moving on thats why we keep having these tragedies. if those who hav the responsibility to save life but take their job with levity and negligence then it high time we started exposing and lead them to jail. we must stand up for accountability especially with life. how many had gone and many will still go just because someone knows that no one will press charges against their deliberate failure and a COSTLY ONE for that matter.

Doctors cure illnesses. Death is not curable.
Even those rich ones the seek 'cure of death' overseas, do most of them not come back as cargo?
Please free the doctors. If that can happen at St. Nicholas Hospital of all places, you can imagine the unquantifiable loss of life going on every minute in the most rural primary health centres. Death of a young man like Charlie is painful and a loss to all of us but we must put limits to our reactions. The senior doctor who failed to come also have been battling his own health challenges.
As for their shirts standing like plywood, try seeing shabbily dressed non professional.

Well if what the lady narrated is true, then it's negligence and that is bad. That being said, I have learnt never to judge a one sided story. We have not heard from the other party involved. It may or may not be exactly how it was narrated. I have also read a lot of comments here and I must say it is sickening how people condemn Nigerian doctors. We may not be at our best considering the prevailing conditions of our hospitals. No one has ever come out to commend doctors. Does it mean that no one has ever benefited health wise from the medical services of a doctor? Hell no. But you will never hear commendation. It's only condemnation. I pray God gives Mrs. Chazb the fortitude to bear the loss.

Such sad stories abound in Nigerian hospitals. They will always say "we are sorry for ur loss". The next thing the family will start blaming evil forces for their misfortunes while the Dr goes free from his incompetence.

Doctors make mistakes and patients become victims. They are left to bear the pains alone. Years ago, a doctor gave me an overdose of aldomet which led to shock while in labour. He later discharged me with 6g haemoglobin (18 %) blood and God saved my life.

Just last year another Dr. delayed in carrying out CS for my son when I fell into preterm labour. The child went into crisis later on and we lost him even aft taking him to NICU & spending much. The pains were much but we've since moved on.

The truth is that Drs make profits while patients count losses. Some of them are agents of .....

People need to calm down. This Dr. Kevwe is a young doctor and we know the medical profession, like most professions out there require years of experience (not just book knowledge) to deal with cases and build confidence.
You can't blame the young man for this death, if there's anyone to blame it's the senior doctors for being unavailable during an emergency. There's little Dr. K could have done on his own.

I'm sorry she lost her husband.

Guy, this is NOT a rare occurrence, o! In Nigeria, many lives are lost daily due to incompetence and negligence on the part of the medical doctors. I have witnessed a few cases. Even abroad, patients do die but the only difference is that everything possible is often done to save their lives before they pass on. In some cases, it is the relatives of the patients that even give up on their sick folks, before the doctors do.

If that footballer Fabrice Muamba who suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field of play in London in 2012, had been playing the same football match in Nigeria, he would have lost his life right there on the pitch. In March 2012, Muamba suffered a cardiac arrest during a televised FA Cup match between Bolton and Tottenham Hotspur, from which he recovered despite his heart having stopped for 78 minutes.

A few things worked in his favour:

1). A medical doctor who knew exactly what to do was available. He was a consultant cardiologist who was one of the spectators;
2). A fully equipped medical ambulance was made available in minutes;
3). Defibrillators were also available and used correctly;
4). The hospital he was rushed to, performed emergency surgical intervention without wasting time.

Until medical care get to this stage in Nigeria, more lives will continue being lost.
