I have discussed Nigerian doctors at length.

I will not again this time because I don't see "most" of them as doctors. I consider them medical technicians.

One of my greatest phobia is falling sick in Nigeria. The thought of going to hospital will kill me before I even get there.

Most of them are in it for the title.

AbuEzeFemi:
My husband called me at about 6:40 AM, Friday the 21st of November 2014, from work. He asked me to come and pick him up, that he was not feeling too good. I left with the driver to get him. When I got there, he was too uncomfortable, and he asked me to take him home. But on our way home, I noticed that he was in pains, so I asked the driver to reverse the car and head instead to the hospital (St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos).
On reaching there, we met Judith, the receptionist. I asked if there was a Doctor around. This was around 7 PM. She said yes and after some time we were asked to go into Room 2. Right there we met a young Doctor called Dr. Ogidigben Kevwe. He asked a few questions that I answered while my husband was wallowing in pains. He (Kevwe) opened an emergency file because according to him, my husband’s file was locked up in Dr. Bamgboye’s office, and no one has access to that office. I told Dr. Kevwe that my husband had incisional hernia surgery done a few months back at the same hospital, August to be precise and it was performed by one Dr. Mohan an India man, and Dr. Balogun at St. Nicholas Hospital. He started to examine him. He then left us in his office and said he was coming back.

He came back after some minutes and said he was trying to reach Dr. Balogun from the reception, but he is not getting through. So I used my husband’s phone and dialed Balogun and got through. At this point, I gave the phone to Dr. Kevwe, and he started explaining to Dr. Balogun, what he thought was the problem. Balogun on the other end asked if my husband was in pains, and Kevwe said yes. Dr. Kevwe told Dr. Balogun that he was suspecting intestinal obstruction. Dr. Balogun asked if there was any swelling around where the incision was done, but Dr.Kevwe said no. Balogun asked if there was any reddish sign around the same area, and Kevwe said no. So Dr. Kevwe suggested giving him antibiotics, but Balogun said that they have to be careful what they give him, since he is a post kidney transplant patient. Balogun asked them to give him a particular injection twice to ease the pains, and he said that they should observe him till the next morning. So I left to go get him what he had asked for (his tea and his stockings). On my way around Bonny Camp, I got a call from a strange number, when I picked up; it was Dr. Kevwe, on the other end. He asked me to turn back to come pick up my husband, and I asked why?

He (Kevwe) said that my Husband is feeling much better, and wants to go home. I asked the driver to reverse and head back to the hospital. And on getting there, I went in and asked the Dr. again why he wants me to take him home. He repeated once again that he feels much better and I asked Kevwe if he was asking me to take him home because he thinks he feels better or that the hospital doesn’t have a bed for him. I asked this because the nurse had mentioned earlier that she needed to check for bed space. Kevwe at this point told me that my Husband would be fine, he asked me to take my Husband home and bring him the following morning. Meanwhile, before then, Kewe wrote a prescription of drugs for my husband which I took to the pharmacist and when the lady there saw it, she asked which Dr. I saw. I told her that it was Dr. Kewe. She moved over to the other side and called the Dr’s office. They both argued about the drug that he wrote, she then gave me just1 tablet of Exforge. When my husband got up from the hospital bed, he staggered and I held him and asked if he’s fine. The Dr. said that it’s the injection that was given to him that he would be fine. So I took him home.

We got home. And just about 15minutes after, my husband said he felt like throwing up. I brought a bowl to him, and he vomited, and he felt a bit better. He slept for some time and got up in excruciating pain.
Immediately I jumped into my clothes and then called Dr. Balogun, to say that we are on our way back to the hospital. He said no problem that the doctor will be waiting for me. I asked, which doctor? And he said the doctor is their senior surgeon by the name Dr. Fadiran. Balogun said that Dr. Fadiran was the doctor on call. We got to the hospital in less than 20 minutes; my husband came down from the car himself. He walked into the hospital by himself before he was wheeled into the ER. Then came Dr. Kevwe, and I asked him about the senior surgeon, and he told me that he would be coming very soon. I wasn’t too happy with that, as I had mentioned to Dr. Balogun that my husband was in serious pains. I expected to see a consultant like he said. Kevwe started by
trying to put him on a drip that took forever, as he was unable to successfully get his veins while my husband was languishing in pain.

My husband kept telling them (DR. Kevwe and the nurse) that he wants to throw up or use the restroom, and he would be fine. He kept saying that if he throws up he will be fine. Meanwhile, Dr. Kevwe was taking instructions on the phone from Dr. Fadiran. This was when I asked when the Dr. would come. I kept asking, “when will the doctor come?” And Dr. Kevwe said Dr. Fadiran asked him to get my entire husband’s information. DR. Kevwe told me that they are
waiting for the Radiologist and the Anesthesiologist, and none of these people showed up.

My husband kept on saying that he wants to throw up. But then, Dr. Kevwe asked the nurse to give him an injection, I asked what the injection was for? And he said it will stop him from vomiting. He became so uncomfortable and was losing his breath. They put him on oxygen, but I guess he was already choking.

Meanwhile, Kevwe was still taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone. At this time, he started gasping for air. Meanwhile, before then, another doctor showed up. I don’t know his name, but he’s average in height and dark complexioned. He inserted a suction tube into his mouth, but I guess he was two hours or more late with that. Because if that was done when I brought him to the hospital that morning, he would have been here with me today.

If Dr. Fadiran were at the hospital, even after he was told that it was an emergency; my husband would have been here with me. If the anesthesiologist was at the hospital, he probably would have been here with me. If the radiologist were around on that morning to at least see what was happening inside of him, he probably would have been here with me. If Dr. Kevwe knew exactly what he was doing that morning without taking instructions from Dr. Fadiran on the phone, with an emergency case right in front of him, my husband would have been here. My husband died of total negligence on the part of St. Nicholas Hospital, and I know it. Like I said earlier, the doctor was 2 hours plus late with the suction, because, at this time, the nurse was already calling my husband’s name, shouting “Mr. Charles, Mr. Charles!” He was given four adrenaline injections. The drip wasn’t going at all, all this while lest I forget. I watched my husband struggled to breath. I watched him fight for his life, and I was right there when he died. And even though they were busy with CPR, I knew when he passed on because immediately he stopped struggling, fluid started gushing out of his mouth and nose, I knew that was it. That was the same fluid that was choking him. If there were a senior consultant or surgeon at the hospital as at when I brought him, he probably, would have been helped. In between all this, Dr. Kevwe at a time said to Dr. Fadiran on the phone that he should come now as the patient is in a critical condition. He said to the same Dr. Fadiran that 11 O’clock might be too
late. I brought my husband at about 6 AM to St. Nicholas Hospital and he died at about 9.30AM without receiving prompt and adequate care.

Human life cannot continue to be lost soo cheaply in Nigerian Hospital, people must be made to account for their actions as professionals hence I have contacted my Lawyers to investigate the cause of death as he has died with our dreams, aspirations, and vision and planned future together.

So sad.its really unfortunate.

Expectedly so many would comment from point of view of ignorance, blaming the young chap on call that day.

Rule # 1: do not administer antiemetics for intestinal obstruction, gastric decompression would have saved the day until the attending arrives.

Who takes the blame for the outcome of the ill timed events?

The young doctor, who would be judged harshly, who was taking instructions from his superior?

The consultant general surgeon who probably was not employed full time at d hosp and so did not stay the night, and perhaps was somewhere else in d middle of a procedure?

The anaesthesiologist who probably was also not on full time employment who may not also knw if d surgeon would be taking the patient in, who may also be piloting a procedure somewhere or is it the radiologist.

I believe if d needed hands were on full time employment, perhaps they would been on ground around that time, especially the surgeon and at least a radiographer.

Even at that, there should have been a senior more experienced resident doctor on call to guide and save d day in unexpected cases like this.

I think the hospital should take this as an opportunity to review their processes.

Does she have a case? Difficult to say, sometimes you need to hear d other party and professionally review the case and what was done to establish negligence.

He probably died from aspiration; Mendelson syndrome, due to obstruction, maybe from a previous surgery, maybe from renal complication.

Precious to d Lord is d death of a saint. Chaz B imparted lives, he loved d Lord, he lived well, he led a purposeful life.

sad that after surviving a kidney transplant, he died due to negligence....
i weep for my country. a state of emergency needs to be declared in the health sector ASAP
as Piers Morgan once said "with this deaths we lose a vital part of our common existence, a part of our collective soul has just been lost"
cry cry cry cry cry cry

as a medic..could easily have been acute abdomen...he could have benefited easily from admission, an Nasogastric tube, a urinary catheter and close monitoring of his vitals through the night, while awaiting blood work and radiology (which should be available 24/7 in emergency centres)
lack of emergency protocols is killing my people! the doctor relies on book knowledge and intuition when medicine is both science and an art. recognise the symptoms and then treat or refer if beyond the scope of your practice. SHIKENA!
My dear, I love the point you just made. People fail to realise that it both a science and art. When you graduate, you start d art. You don't turn good over night. Medicine is a like a mechanic work. Even after gradation, you have to be trained like a mechanic, receiving instructions from your superiors for EVERY case. It is high time people realised that. I don't blame the doctor on call, however, like you said, something similar to Oschner-Sherren's regimen should have been instituted and suspected IO should not be managed as a home case.

May God continually grant us good health and deliver us from health emergencies.

Last Friday to 11pm and I met accident victims and crowd shortly before Onipanu Busstop. I offered to help take 3 of the 5 most injured to LUTH.

There was only one doctor at the hospital's emergency wing. She was obviously overwhelmed by the various crowds seeking her attention. I had to literally drag her out to my car as one of them was running in and out of comma, with blood gushing from his nose, ears and mouth.

She started questioning me, ' who are they to me?' 'who will bear the bills?' who referred them here?...' She went inside and came back to say there were no beds and we should hold on.

Forty minutes and we were still waiting (how did I know the time? - I called my wife on entering LUTH gate and when she called back to ask 'How far?' was exactly 35 minutes). Then one of the victims said they were all LUTH medical students. Armed with this noveau info I ran inside again to shout it over and over again to anyone who cared to listen went inand just then one student doctor - I safely assume - came out to see them.

We were then referred to an 'Annex' where it took another 'eternity' to have them wheeled to bed.

The LORD help us in this land.

Why must nincopomps like you always see this kind of rare occurences in the health sector as an opportunity to abuse all hard working Nigerian trained doctors? Events like this happen in every country. Stop being a big f.o.o.l!

May his soul rest in peace. May God give you the fortitude to bear thia irreparable loss. I can imagine the pain of losing such a promising young man.

To the doctors, both young and old, you can be that link between the life and death of that helpless patient before you and your action at that point in time determines to a large extent tge result you get.

How can you think of or make a diagnosis of intestinal obstruction (in this case ib a CKD patient who obviously and not surprising has hypertension) and you are thinking of EXFORGE first, and forgetting the 3 tubes you were taught in the medical school...
1...NG TUBE (which in this case was all that was needed to this patient who choked to death via aspiration...chemical pneumonitis...it is a killer)
2...IV LINE (which the young doctor was having difficulty getting...he may not have passed an NG TUBE before)
3....URETHRAL CATHETER...to monitor his urine output...being a renal transplant patient.

These three could have gone a long way to save this man's life. I dont know the cause of his death but from the narrative above it is obvious.

l will not blame the young doctor because what happened to him (Dr Kiewv) happend to almost everyone at their infancy years in the profession. l put the blame on both Drs Balogun and Fadiran who knew what was at stake but never bordered to tell the young doctor to pass an NG TUBE (except if they did)...and to tell a patient with suspected intestinal obstruction to go home (after giving pain relief) is unheard of.

Doctors always do your best to save that fellow lying helplessly before you.

To Ma'am please take heart!!

Intestinal obstruction is not out of place in this case. (Post surgery case). Electrolyte imbalance esp hypo K+ can cause obstruction.
I only blame the young Dr Kewve for reassuring the patient to go home, that no cause for alram.
If I were to be on call, I would have admitted for observation while taking samples for Chemistry having gotten the history of renal transplant. If my senior fells to show up at stipulated time, I will refer them immediately to avoid stain to my hard earn MBBS.
I know Dr Kevwe very well while we were in UPTH.
But you know how some Private hospital go about their patients.... Esp St Nicholas, they hardly refer cases.

After reading all the posts i would like to share a recent experience i had... My son was recently discharged from Lagoon hospital, when i got a call while at home from a doctor to please bring back the medications that they had prescribed for my son (a toddler) because he had reacted severely to one of the drugs in the past.... First thank God for the out of patient medical review system at Lagoon and also that the Network was available and working and i was able to receive the call... Just imagine what could have happened if we had innocently administer the drugs to my son only for serious issues to start during the night, where do you begin, where do you rush him to..
The drug was replaced with another containing a different formulation.... but there are things i would love to praise Lagoon hospital for...
1. They have invested heavily in the use of information technology to improve their care of patients
2. The era of physically (manual) opening of files for a patient in different branches is no more... all patient have electronic medical records where any doctors in any of their branch can log on to and make a medical assessment.
3. It is easier to sort through lots of patients file history electronically, than the methods of piling heaps of files that probably would have faded away, illegible doctors scribble, missing sheets or papers eating away by cockroaches.
2, When you go to the hospital you get an sms alert indicating the date and time you came to the clinic. ( an area of improvement is for the alert to include the Dr. Name and phone number and area of specialization.
3. Another suggested area of improvement is that when you are given your drugs, the name of the drugs administered should be sent in form of an sms to your phone and via email. Believe me in case of emergency ie. on the road etc., a doctor that goes through your phone sms and see the list of drugs that you had been administered over a period of time,,,, will find such an information invaluable in making certain judgment call.

Some may ask why was the drug that my son had reacted to in the past prescribed again?,,,, obviously in every system there are still loopholes.. (but having a system of checks and balance would reveal such mistakes) but i believe the Management of Lagoon would have looked into this issue and put in place proactive means to ensure that a recurrence of such mistake those not happen again.... that is what is only logically expected.

The ministry of health should make it compulsory:
1. for all hospitals to have a electronic medical record filing system
2. There should be system for sharing such medical records amongst various medical practitioners in case of emergency or need for alternative opinion.
3. Government funding of such a scheme should be carried out and a long term repayment plan worked out for clinics who do not have the financial means to set up such an electronic database.
4. Information technology should be employed in line with international best practice.
5. Hospitals should have incidence reporting and how taking necessary steps avoided the incidence leading to a fatal event.
6. Consultants should have permit to have special siren fitted in their cars for purpose of emergencies.

I am in total support of Chazb's wife action... too many innocent and voiceless people have left this world before their time due to negligence and decay in the health care system. The action she has taken can only lead to system improvement and make our doctors more vigilant, caring and responsive in the discharge of their duties.

thats how one young doctor nearly killed my mother last year until a consultant walked in at the nick of time, the consultant was so scared he flung his brand new Toyota car keys away through the window and which took more than 5 people to find. we were later told by a nurse that if that consultant had come even 10 minutes later there would have been nothing anyone could have done

Sooo sad!!! Dr Kevwe that I know in st. Nicholas is actually a paediatrician! fought with him a lot when my he was always pricking my new born baby in a bid to get her blood sample (she was very tiny with multiple needle marks on her fragile hands and legs). Poor guy was sitting in and taking the heat the so called consultants should take. why should a case file be locked in an office? and how can a paediatric handle such a matter? St. Nicholas has the habit of sending their trainee doctors to handle cases they shouldn't. I use them, so I know. I also complain a lot but, how better are the other hospitals?

This is one of the trickiest part of medicine that I found out that book smart hardly teaches any doctor.
Having an elder brother, who is a medic, he usually tells the stories of how they have this struggles in the hospital, where for some patients with no visible veins, it's always a huge battle trying to insert needles into the vein.
Whether it is by intuition or special gift, the other doctors will always seek for his help whenever they have a tough case because he will usually get it right, almost at first try.
It can be a harrowing experience for the patient who gets several needle stabs with the attendant pains added to his ailment.

So sad though...Most nigerian doctors especially the young ones are not really competent. I always get nervous and overly curious, asking questions upon questions why a prescription should be taken if one atends to any of my dear ones...Many of them have killed innocent lives out of this...These are cases NMA should look into and not asking for salary increment when no VALUE is being delivered...

why only you madam ? it was obvious your low pcv caused the hypotension not the aldomet. No doctor will rush you to the theatre with a preterm contraction unless you have repeated history of preterm birth. You didnt tell us the gestational age when you fell into labour. Dont be quick to judge in this case. For all you know, it may be the woman that requested to go home cos she didnt trust the doctor on duty. i am not defending anybody but you dont judge a case from the cover.

My pcv was ok. The Dr. gave me 500mg instead of the 250mg I was on. The low p cv you mentioned resulted from serious bleeding after birth from the cervix. I was given pitocin and prostaglandin to induce labour. Was I not supposed to be transfixed with blood?
As for the gestational age, the baby was 8 months and 5 days in d womb. No history of preterm labour anyway.
Am not looking for someone to blame but merely pointing out some of those things our Drs do wrongly

I THINK THE GUY WAS BATTLING WITH KIDNEY FAILURE BEFORE. SHE SHOULD JUST FORGET AND MOVE ON INSTEAD OF ATTACHING EMOTIONAL TRAUMA FOR SOMETHING THAT YOU CANT CONTROL.
PEOPLE MISQUOTING MY STAND SHOULD UNDERSTAND ME BETTER
IT HAS HAPPENED, SO VERY PAINFUL. I REALLY MISSED THE GUY, BUT SHE MUST MOVE ON. SHE MUST NOT ALLOW SUCH THINGS TO WEIGH HER DOWN BEING A WOMAN. SHE MIGHT INJURE HER SELF EMOTIONALLY AND NOT REALLY GOOD FOR HER HEALTH ALSO.IF SHE KEPT NURSING THE PAIN LIKE THIS. IT IS PAINFUL FROM HER TONE BUT SHE MUST BE STRONG FOR NOW, UNLESS DEPRESSION WILL SET IN , AND YOU KNOW WHAT THIS CAN LEAD TO.
SOMEONE SAID BECAUSE I DIDNT LOSE CLOSE ONE, THAT IS WHY I TYPED LIKE THAT. I HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCE LOOSING BOTH PARENTS AND A BROTHER WITHIN FEW MONTHS INTERVAL. MY MUM CASE WAS EVEN WORSE, IN THE HOSPITALS WE WENT THROUGH. I KNEW WHAT I WENT THROUGH. I WAS SUICIDAL AND NEARLY DIE OF HBP BEING A TEENAGER THEN, SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED AND NEARLY RAN MAD. THEN I GAINED ADMISSION THEN TO UNIVERSITY AND GOD TOOK CONTROL.
CAN I CHANGE THE PAST....NO
CAN I MOVE ON..... YES
.....GET MY POINT.

U might be correct, I don't blame her, LET HER CREATE the awareness so that relevant authorities will take note and perhaps caution and stop the doctors from their non-challant behaviors, it might save another ones life. It might save someone from being killed like this.

Na dis kind thing I no dey like! angry Why on earth are you calling him a liar??! Do you think all your medical colleagues are saints?? shocked I used to have asthma growing up and I have made it a point of duty to learn about the kind of stuff that I am allergic to, so that I can avoid them like a plague.

I was once prescribed Septrin many years back by a doctor, and when I complained to him that I was allergic to Septrin, guess what he said? I "should manage it," as they don't have any other drug in stock, that would cure the ailment I had at that time. I threw the drugs away, sharp-sharp. And promptly went to another hospital for treatment.

I have had relatives and friends whose condition took a turn for the worse, due to the negligence of doctors.

A few years back, an elderly relative was rushed to a private hospital near his house in Lagos, with a high fever at 8p.m at night. He was admitted and given some drugs by the doctor on duty, before he left that evening. sad

The following morning, the next doctor on duty did not attend to this patient until 11a.m when the patient's sister-in-law came in with his food. She then started running around calling the doctor. The doctor checked him up, did some bloodwork and stated that the patient needed a blood transfusion. undecided

Money was coughed out promptly or released on the spot to the hospital, (almost 60k for two pints of blood) at 11.30 am. Until 4p.m when that patient eventually died, no doctor attended to him again despite the sister-in-law's complaints, and the blood transfusion was NOT even done, as there was no blood delivered to the hospital to be given to the patient. 'We are still trying to get the blood,' was all they said. It was extremely painful. His family was thrown into grief. How would you classify this case? shocked

dollypartron, i wish you would make use of your own brain

did i exonerate the doctors from my post? No
i only claimed that doctors even with all their knowledge are overwelmed by workings of a higer power most times......

The thing is this, everything cannot and should not be spiritualised. I do not doubt the power of prayer or faith. I have been and I am still experiencing the power of prayers. Sometimes we have to step back and analyze the situation. In this case the doctors failed woefully by the look of the things read in the original post.
A doctor can be overwhelmed and it is very normal. The issue is, did they do all their possible best? No. If they did all they could, and the patient later died, then we can hook it on God.

cant u make an intelligent argument and not resort to abusive words? have you heard of the greatest neurosurgon in the world? let me give you the benefit of the doubt and say you have, now neurosugery is the hardest form of surgery, why? because your dealing with 80% water(in the brain), now this man has various times said he has received guidance in the most hopless of these operations which he knew he could do nothing about....and didnt mince words but has clearly stated that in those situations its God that has guided him....
funny part is prior to some of these operations,he would refuse operating because he would refer to such cases as hopless, but the relatives of such victims will insist that God has told them to come to him that he will do a succesful ops through this surgeon. (at this jucture if u can use your brain ull see that its FAITH at work)
I am not insulting you. Just stating as it is. But I can see you have reciprocated the supposed insult.

I know so well about Ben Carson. I follow his story and activities religiously.
The difference between Ben Carson and the doctors of St. Nicholas Hospital is that Ben Carson will leave no stone unturned while dealing with a difficult case. He would do all the best he can while relying on God to do the rest.
At this junction if you still have your brain intact, you should remember a bible passage that says "Faith without work, is dead". It's just like a student who after receiving a prophesy that he would graduate with a first class, decided not to study or work hard in school. Such student cannot get a first class, with faith or no faith. Cos God does not condone laziness or slacking. The doctors of St. Nicholas Hospital slacked in this case.

i wont really blame you especially if you cliam to be a christan, you must be a baby christian, change your church too....the church i attend dead people are prayed for not by the pastor but by the congration and the dead are brought back to life.(one major rule of life is simply faith on the word of God, finish)

what more an ailment?

I am a Christian and by all standards I am not a baby Christian. I am a Christian who knows every issues should not be spiritualised. In this particular case, you have failed to analyse the suitation properly.
Jesus raised the dead. Yea. And he has promised us Christians that we will do greater works than he did. Yea.
But you should realize that these couple were not looking for miracles. They had faith in the Hospital and the hospital failed them. It is a different case if they took him to the Church for prayers.

using your brain very well youll see that even aethists like richard branson(virgin) can attest to the power of faith, and the list is endless

Don't get it twisted, when an atheist is talking about faith, he is in no way referring to God. An Atheist believes in science.

Dollypatron

Firstly, ur a baby christian, because God didn't say believe of have faith in God for you to get answrrs to prayers...he said believe and believe WHAT? That you have your petion...hence the statement, "let it be unto you as thou has believe" that was to the blind beggars..where ever in the bible did you see or hear jesus say according to MY faith or the disciples faith be it unto u...hoep u catch my drift? So u see u that's is a christian that owns faith don't use or understand it, but an atheist like branson, we tell about his success based on his believeing(unciouss practice of faith)...but u don't gerrit.

Pls its not at this junction pls find the correct word and pls do have yourself a good day, wheather I have a brain or not you decide

I lost one of my dear parent to medical negligence and almost lost my surviving parent to another young doctor. Corruption and bad leadership is the root cause of most of these avoidable deaths in our hospitals. i marvel when i see ambulances in war thorn areas in the middle-east with basic emergency and life saving equipments on TV, especially oxygen. our hospitals lack basic modern equipments, our ambulances (few) are simply hearse. The nonchalance and merciless behavior and attitude of medical personnel in this country is horrible.
I feel so disappointed undecided undecided undecidedwhen some people advise we leave this madness to God, whereas poor people continue to die or left deformed for live, over simple medical issues in our morgues oops... hospitals. Our lawyers really need to exploit medical negligence as a lucrative area of practice. In the western nations the fear of litigation, losing one's medical license and incarceration, keeps the medical personnel on their toes at all times. I pray those of you who are quick to dump our man made challenges to God loss loved ones in this terrible conditions in our glorified hospitals and experience the pain involved.
some of the problems bedeviling our medical sector from my experience at the hospitals both private and public includes but not limited to the following are:

Institutional and endemic Corruption pervading every facets of Nigeria.
Poor training and attitude of our doctors and medical personnel.
Poor/ Non existent regulations, supervisions, Monitoring of Government and private hospitals and facilities by Nigerian Medical and Dental Council and other regulatory agencies.
Poor and obsolete Equipment.
Poor Remuneration (compared to other professionals and jobs in Nigeria, I think they are better paid).

No sane country flies its elite and citizens oversees for medical attention and treatment. if our hospitals were right late former Governor Alamesighgha will be alive to face corruption charges, late President Yardua would still be alive today and perhaps on his second term in office to mention but a few. meanwhile RIP Chaz B. May the Lord give your widow and loved ones the fortitude to bear this painful loss to many and the will and resources to ensure that this nonsense never repeat itself at st. Nicholas Hospital Amen.

WHEN YOU PUT TOO MUCH HOPE ON MERE MORTALS.NO PLACE WHERE SHE MENTIONED AND I SAY A WORD OF PRAYER. HMMMMN PRAYER STILL WORKS

In such situation, its very difficult to pray. Even when you try, it's done in fear and doubt.

And sometimes, after much prayer or no prayer, the will of God will still be done.

I came across this story and thought I should share it:

Africa’s Trauma Epidemic | By OLA OREKUNRIN OCT. 17, 2013

LAGOS — It was dusk and I was on my way home from Abeokuta, a vibrant city in southwest Nigeria. My driver had switched off the car’s air-conditioning so I could open the windows and feel the breeze. He was weaving between potholes in the road when suddenly, the scene ahead changed.

A large truck had pulled out carelessly onto the road, knocking a car straight into the median.

That stretch of road is notoriously dangerous, not just because of traffic accidents but also because of armed robbers. It’s for that reason that I suppressed my natural instinct to stop and help.

I was filled with guilt as we passed the wrecked car, because I knew that if the young man at the wheel had been badly injured, there was only a small chance that he would get the emergency treatment he needed.

I knew this because I am a trauma doctor and the founder of West Africa’s first indigenous air ambulance service. Nigeria, a country of more than 170 million people, has no organized trauma response system and no formal training for paramedics. Injured people are often taken to the hospital in a car or minibus or draped across the motorcycle of a good Samaritan, sometimes several hours after the accident has occurred.

Even if the patient does reach a local hospital, it may not have the skilled staff or equipment needed. (There are only a few that do, and there are huge distances between them.) Most of those who are seriously injured probably bleed to death.

So I couldn’t help it when, a few moments later, I said “Stop the car, please.”

I grabbed one of our emergency response bags from my trunk and walked back. I tried to concentrate on the types of injuries the driver might have rather than how unsafe it was walking on that stretch of road, particularly in the evening. Was he bleeding? Was he conscious?

The crash scene had quickly attracted some of the people who typically gather around accidents in Nigeria. Bystanders were pulling the driver out of the car. Before long they were joined by a barefoot “prophet” in a white robe. No Nigerian accident scene is complete without a prophet who commands everyone to stand by while he loudly predicts that the patient will stop bleeding. The patient is often drained of blood by the time the prophecy is complete....

The World Bank predicts that in the next two years, road accidents could be the biggest killer of African children between 5 and 15. By 2030, according to the Global Burden of Disease study, road accidents will be the fifth leading cause of death in the developing world, ahead of malaria, tuberculosis and H.I.V.

If you add to these numbers the injuries caused by violent crime and communal conflict, then you have all the ingredients for a public health emergency.

And yet, trauma receives only a tiny fraction of the attention and money given to these three infectious diseases. Every health care conference I attend focuses on vaccines, treatment and training to combat the infamous “triple epidemic.”

Over the last decade, billions of dollars have poured into Africa with the laudable aim of defeating these killer diseases. But that most basic killer, injury, remains neglected...

A pill would do very little for someone on a rural road in Nigeria with a head injury and a collapsed lung.

We need to put in place systems to provide lifesaving care for accident victims. They need to be moved to a fully equipped hospital — one with X-ray machines, CT scanners, a burn unit — within the space of 45 minutes. We need at least 10 of these proper hospitals. We need to improve our roads, and we need a high-quality ambulance system to drive on them. And we need paramedic schools — like the one my company is helping to open, the first of its kind in Nigeria.

Some countries in other parts of the world have come up with proactive solutions. In Israel, a group called United Hatzalah helps volunteer emergency workers get quickly to accident sites, by “ambucycle” or on foot, if necessary. But Africa’s challenge will require an African response — and international support.

On the road that night, I quickly assessed that the young man needed urgent medical attention. I gave him oxygen and inserted a makeshift airway. I noted that he probably had internal bleeding and did my best to stem whatever external bleeding I could detect.

A passing taxi then transported him to the nearest hospital. He had a fighting chance. But too many injured Nigerians, forgotten on the side of the road, do not. It’s time the global public-health community paid attention to Africa’s urgent need for emergency medical care.

Ola Orekunrin is a trauma doctor and the managing director of Flying Doctors Nigeria, an air ambulance service. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/18/opinion/africas-trauma-epidemic.html?_r=0

More attention needs to be placed on emergency care. Sadly, there are too few doctors who realise that every second counts when an emergency situation, presents itself. St. Nicholas probably had the equipment but lacked the right skilled personnel with appropriate knowledge on site, on the day ChazB walked into their hospital. undecided

Its just unfortunate. It is the same thing across the country. Not even to keep track record of a patient is a problem. An old chemist is better than new doctors

Madam...., we @.........(Nig) Enterprises are so sorry about the lost of your husband. The Lord will heal your wounds, and console the rest of your family. Pray that your husband will forever rest in the bosom of the Lord. To be honest, I will not blame Dr. Kwewe, he did tried his best as a Dr. Remember, all Doctors just try their best, but God heal or save. We should all remember that there's an appointment time for everyone to exit this world, and that is why it's been proclaimed all the four corners of the world that we should be prepared, because no one knows when he or she will have the last breath. Men should learn to live everyday as our last day on earth, because nobody knows what could happen the next 5 to 10 mins. We should prepare our ways always in case death come calling. Death is the only sure thing to happen to us individually. When, how, where and what time it will happen is what was hidden from us all. It is well.

You failed to provide answers to the modest questions my lil tensed up friend!Anyway you are just one of the funny mob. How can any rational & complete being begin to judge a case by hearing just one side? Its wrong. The single story is never the whole story. Sorry i picked your post...it was just a random choice; you are the representative of the majority of the irrational posts blaming nigerian doctors for all the deaths that ever occured among their friends & families.
