Na dis kind thing I no dey like! angry Why on earth are you calling him a liar??! Do you think all your medical colleagues are saints?? shocked I used to have asthma growing up and I have made it a point of duty to learn about the kind of stuff that I am allergic to, so that I can avoid them like a plague.

I was once prescribed Septrin many years back by a doctor, and when I complained to him that I was allergic to Septrin, guess what he said? I "should manage it," as they don't have any other drug in stock, that would cure the ailment I had at that time. I threw the drugs away, sharp-sharp. And promptly went to another hospital for treatment.

I have had relatives and friends whose condition took a turn for the worse, due to the negligence of doctors.

A few years back, an elderly relative was rushed to a private hospital near his house in Lagos, with a high fever at 8p.m at night. He was admitted and given some drugs by the doctor on duty, before he left that evening. sad

The following morning, the next doctor on duty did not attend to this patient until 11a.m when the patient's sister-in-law came in with his food. She then started running around calling the doctor. The doctor checked him up, did some bloodwork and stated that the patient needed a blood transfusion. undecided

Money was coughed out promptly or released on the spot to the hospital, (almost 60k for two pints of blood) at 11.30 am. Until 4p.m when that patient eventually died, no doctor attended to him again despite the sister-in-law's complaints, and the blood transfusion was NOT even done, as there was no blood delivered to the hospital to be given to the patient. 'We are still trying to get the blood,' was all they said. It was extremely painful. His family was thrown into grief. How would you classify this case? shocked

You failed to provide answers to the modest questions my lil tensed up friend!Anyway you are just one of the funny mob. How can any rational & complete being begin to judge a case by hearing just one side? Its wrong. The single story is never the whole story. Sorry i picked your post...it was just a random choice; you are the representative of the majority of the irrational posts blaming nigerian doctors for all the deaths that ever occured among their friends & families.

Hmmmmm ok... but what other story do the hospital administrators want to say......?

Hi, trust me these hospitals were not run by quacks, neither did they engage unqualified personnel. shocked The first one I went to was a federal medical centre, in the community where I served as a youth corper. I am not sure that the management would hire a quack doctor to attend to their patients. undecided Pls note that I was not attended to by a pharmacist or a nurse, o! In fact, when I complained to the pharmacist on duty who issued the drugs that I was allergic to Septrin, he was shocked that the doctor prescribed it to me. He was the one who insisted that I take the drugs and go back to the doctor to lodge a complaint, so that he can write another prescription for a different set of drugs for me. sad

The second one where my relative died, was a private hospital run by a well-known organisation in Lagos, right next door to a catholic church and is used by more than half of the residents in that area. Courses that form part of the continuing medical education for medical doctors, are run in that hospital. The medical director is a well-known consultant with several years of experience, and was a visiting lecturer to a medical school within a top university, in the past. Would he knowingly hire a non-medical person to treat patients?? shocked shocked

Please take the blinkers off,and stop defending your medical colleagues blindly. Quite a number of them are incompetent. The fact that you have an MBBS does not mean you are infallible. I know the difference between a nurse and a doctor, o!

Chaz B was a post renal transplant patient, he has had two major medical issues after the transplant which necessitated a laparotomy . Before we kill the hospital and the doctors, few people need to understand prognosis of renal transplant.

In America where best medical care is obtainable, 5 year survival chance is about 80% if post transplant treatment is carried out in the same center. He had his transplant in India, he had to fly back for another surgery few weeks after the transplant in India. Post renal Care in Nigeria was not too good, i am sure he did not get the necessary post renal support he needed.

one thing a renal transplant patient needs to be wary of are symptoms and signs of rejection. Chaz B's body had rejected the kidney and he had signs that were clear. so what was his post transplant treatment and follow up like? Nephrologists, General surgeon , cardiologists , Dietitian ( very important ) , Internal physician asides immunosuppressants.

He probably had uremia as a result of poor kidney function, Intestinal obstruction as a result of Lymphocele , complications of the renal transplant itself and laparotomy he had few weeks after his transplant.

FLUID THERAPY - in a patient with evidence of renal shut down not the best option.
ANALGESICS - no way

NG TUBE INSERTION ? - maybe to empty the content of the stomach , but the reason for the abdominal distention was most like fluid retention as a result of chronic renal failure.

UREMIA - only urgent dialysis could have saved him , but was he stable enough for the procedure? UREA shuts down the heart and brain in minutes.

Respiratory distress - Pulmonary edema, aspiration. This sums up a bad case, which St. Nicholas wasn't prepared for. Are the consultants full time employees of St Nicholas or part time. What is the working hours stated in the employment offer. Most doctors work 3 jobs to keep body and soul together, so dishing out instructions via the phone is part of the modus operandi.

only few hospitals can afford to keep 4 consultants on physical call every night, i doubt if there is anyone in Lagos. The healthcare system is messed up, poor training , poor remuneration , poor financing , poor and obsolete equipment. Government will not finance training , banks will not finance equipment purchase. Banks will rather finance oil and gas, shopping malls and telecoms projects.

Is Dr. Kevwe at fault? No. He transferred the case to his superiors who were supposed to take over.

we are quick to descend on doctors every time without critical analysis. so many Nigerian doctors have been 'bashed' away to other countries. Australia is recruiting them daily paying them up to 4600 dollars weekly, UK wants them , US and UAE. You down here call them block head.

Chaz B's case was bad, what he needed was a multi disciplinary team in a word class facility to save him. This is at today is not available in Nigeria.

I lost my beloved siste in the hands of one of these quacks. She went to a hospital somewhere around agege to complain of a case of fistula.
before she could say Jack rob, one so called rheumatologist in the hospital was on her case. The consultant gave my sister one of the strongest type of immunosuppressant.
Some days later when a pharmacist friend of my mum came visiting, she screamed when she saw the pack of the drug on our dinning table and asked who the drug was for, she then immediately ask my sister to stop taking the drug but it was too late cause her kidney packed up which i got to know about the next day at the hospital. Now this is the interesting part. When we went back to the hospital to complain, the first thing that the doctor did was to do a test just to confirm renal failure and before we could even blink he had already referred us to one DIALYSER CLINIC near oshodi bus stop and insisted on us taking her there, it was just obvious the hospital at agege had an understanding with the DIALYSER CLINIC to pack up as many kidneys as they can and reffer same to them.
All this happened around 2008 and at the dialysis clinic she had to do close to 5 or 6 sessions of dialysis in a week and each session cost 25000. I lost my sister about 3months after.

After I lost my sister I was in the process of arranging the extermination of the consultant but along the line was advised to leave vengeance to God

I THINK THE GUY WAS BATTLING WITH KIDNEY FAILURE BEFORE. SHE SHOULD JUST FORGET AND MOVE ON INSTEAD OF ATTACHING EMOTIONAL TRAUMA FOR SOMETHING THAT YOU CANT CONTROL.
PEOPLE MISQUOTING MY STAND SHOULD UNDERSTAND ME BETTER
IT HAS HAPPENED, SO VERY PAINFUL. I REALLY MISSED THE GUY, BUT SHE MUST MOVE ON. SHE MUST NOT ALLOW SUCH THINGS TO WEIGH HER DOWN BEING A WOMAN. SHE MIGHT INJURE HER SELF EMOTIONALLY AND NOT REALLY GOOD FOR HER HEALTH ALSO.IF SHE KEPT NURSING THE PAIN LIKE THIS. IT IS PAINFUL FROM HER TONE BUT SHE MUST BE STRONG FOR NOW, UNLESS DEPRESSION WILL SET IN , AND YOU KNOW WHAT THIS CAN LEAD TO.
SOMEONE SAID BECAUSE I DIDNT LOSE CLOSE ONE, THAT IS WHY I TYPED LIKE THAT. I HAVE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCE LOOSING BOTH PARENTS AND A BROTHER WITHIN FEW MONTHS INTERVAL. MY MUM CASE WAS EVEN WORSE, IN THE HOSPITALS WE WENT THROUGH. I KNEW WHAT I WENT THROUGH. I WAS SUICIDAL AND NEARLY DIE OF HBP BEING A TEENAGER THEN, SERIOUSLY DEPRESSED AND NEARLY RAN MAD. THEN I GAINED ADMISSION THEN TO UNIVERSITY AND GOD TOOK CONTROL.
CAN I CHANGE THE PAST....NO
CAN I MOVE ON..... YES
.....GET MY POINT.

If we keep on accepting ill manners to be thwarted ,would it stop or better still decrease the menace from not happening, Chaz B would have been saved if the Doctor knew what to do at the right time.
A lot of people have been murdered through these acts of negligence from our Medical doctors.

Is this how we will be doing.

Are we the first to accept these christian doctrines gan sef.if anything happen like that, that's when you will see some mofos admonishing the family of the deceased to accept it like that, accept what.

There's no need for the unwarranted insult, if one feels a Chemist is better at a job dan a Medic, the logical thing to do is to simply go see d Chemist which is what I simply requested you guys to do...it simply makes no sense rushing to a hospital when you know you'll still insult the doctor and say a Chemist is better dan him....it's better you go where you have faith in.

There's simply no reason for you to visit a hospital except something is wrong with you upstairs. We in d general hospital will say a big thank you for that as it will be a good riddance!

Another issue in Nigeria is the persistent nature of being overwhelmed. Few professionals exist and fewer are dedicated. There has to be a change mentality and our politicians need to be tasked with expanding medical facilities. The medical staff need to be rededicated.

There's nothing like nonchalance.....it is instead hypocrisy on your own part to denigrate a Doctor to a point of a quack chemist and even confirm him as being inferior to the chemist and even patronizing the Chemist only to bring your health battered condition to the same Doctor you ridiculed and den when he tries his best and fails, you continue to bash him and yet continue to patronize him.

hello ray,
sad you chose to insult yourself rather. as one doctor to another please mind your language and show respect.
if you clearly read my points, i simply offered my opinion and did not label or cuss anyone.
please if that's all you have to say then don't quote me. our opinions may differ that's why we have clinical conferences but never be rude.
the ABC's of emergency management still apply....
A-Airway: did our colleague ensure that Mr Charles maintained a patent airway?
B-Breathing: did he ensure that his breathing was efficient? was there need for oxygen even via nasal prongs
C-Circulation: did his vitals necessitate augmentation with IV fluids? if not...there was no need battling to set up an IV line just then, except if he wanted to take a sample for blood chemistry.
For your information i'm an emergency medicine specialist.

I can relate to the bolded condition as i had this recently (post pregnancy complication). what saved me was a ''multi disciplinary team in a world class facility'' and most importantly God.

I had senior consultants - gynaecologists, cardiologists and even other professionals i had never heard of all around me in minutes. In less than 12 hours, I had done all manners of tests including a CT scan and Echocardiogram not forgetting the various blood tests that were conducted.

I do moan about the 'crazy' taxes i pay here but for once, I was thankful as I saw my taxes in ''action'' as taxes are used by the government to fund healthcare.

Nigeria has a long way to do regarding healthcare. If something can be done to end corruption, then taxes will be used more judiciously especially in the healthcare sector.

i agree with some points of yours! but also uraemia doesn't present suddenly...and to remember our colleague saw the previous night. except he missed the signs. what of uraemic encephalopathy: Chaz b was still coherent till demise.
like you said, the doctor shouldn't be bothered with giving fluids-but for me with taking a sample later.
a multidisciplinary team is a far shot in this country so..i would have loved the doc to do the basics...and referral on phone to a doctor that was not present is no referral, they could have moved him to a facility where the specialists were on ground, that is after doing all to stabilize him.
sending him home that night was also wrong IMO

The doctor never for once recommend using a splint to properly it up until I angrily asked why and it was done.

Cut Story Short, I ended up treating myself by buying a specialized splint on Amazon less than $10 as the hospital or Igbobi the consultant called couldn't do any better.

Sad but I most times feel safe in my own hands than the hospitals. Even for governor Akpabio despite building the biggest hospital in Africa still dodged to UK after his James Bond driving accident grin RIP ChazB.
aren't u a doctor no more?

It is high time that all these private hospitals are looked into & taught a lesson. They charge so much & yet they employ doctors that don't know anything. Imagine u going to a doctor for treatment & he'll be looking the case up in his book. I've been a victim in their hands, first it was my mum @ lasuth, they gave her overdose without checking her body weight, it reacted adversely and she died from d complication. Secondly, it was when I was pregnant, dey said i had blood infection& was given a drug. I took it in d morning bt threw it up d way it was @ night. I went back & insisted on seeing d consultant who said i shld discontinue drug cos it Wld affect my pregnancy. Also said there was no infection I've made up my mind that b4 I take any drugs prescribed by a doctor, he must explain its usefulness to me.
