Nigerian traditional king visits Triad

When Bob Brown met Kabiru Shotobi working in a hotel in Lagos State, Nigeria, he knew Shotobi had great potential but could not imagine what he’d eventually become: a king.
Shotobi, an oba or traditional king, of the city of Ikorodu, visited Winston-Salem and the Triad last week to show gratitude to Brown, the CEO and founder of a global business management consulting firm in High Point, for putting him through college at N.C. A&T State University and to drum up support and opportunities for the people in his city and country.
“It was a privilege for me to have that opportunity, and I want to have those opportunities extended to my people in my community,” Shotobi said.
Shotobi said many people in his country lack the opportunity to have basic education and health care.
“I have to believe that America can help my people,” he said.
Although he did not attend any of his alma mater’s homecoming activities over the weekend, he said his time there in the early 1980s was wonderful.
“It was just like family,” he said. “There were so many international students, and the atmosphere was conducive to me.”
Shotobi, who was visiting with his wife, Olori Kudirat, and daughter, Adetayo, met with university and business leaders to build relationships to help his city and country implement solar power and agricultural developments.
“We were able to meet with IBM and tell them our areas of need and how we could use their assistance and technical know-how to get opportunities to my people,” Shotobi said.
Shotobi and his family will also visit Maryland, Chicago, Atlanta and London, England, before they return to Ikurodu.
Nigeria is a federal republic with a president as head of state. Obas are traditional and symbolic rulers of cities and states in Yorubaland, a region of Nigeria. Obas are not born to rule but are selected from one of two ruling houses in Yorubaland.
Keith Grandberry, former president of Winston-Salem’s Urban League, works with Brown and Shotobi to foster relationships between local companies and Lagos.

Nigeria-Based Printivo Wants To Become The Vistaprint Of Africa

Vistaprint has been around for 20 years, so if you live in the U.S. or Europe, ordering printed material online might not seem like a big deal. In Nigeria, however, getting business card and flyers are still a pain that requires multiple visits to a brick-and-mortar shop, says Printivo founder Oluyomi Ojo.

Ojo has family members who work in the printing industry, but he didn’t realize how complicated it is to handle orders until he became a managing director at an ad agency, especially for customers outside of Lagos, one of Nigeria’s printing hubs.

“Small businesses are not really catered to. If you want to print a quantity as low as 100 business cards, you might have to travel two hours to a print shop, sit down and have someone design them, then come back in a week and pick them up,” says Ojo.

“We saw there are a lot of problems for small-scale businesses that want to order print marketing. It’s a huge opportunity for us because there are more than 17 million small businesses in Nigeria alone.”

Zuriel Oduwole expands education MDG, meets Cuba’s Ambassador to Nigeria

THE United Nation’s (UN) Millennium Development Goals set globally in 2000 to accomplish eight specific targets by the year 2015, has almost reached its deadline.

Some of the lofty goals set include ensuring Universal Primary Education, Healthcare, Poverty Reduction, and Gender Equality (including Girls Education) among the core areas.

In her understanding of this mission and as part of her own contribution towards reaching this goal, Zuriel Oduwole held her maiden “First Lady’s Colloquy” in Lagos in April 2014, where she invited First Ladies and Gender Ministers from Africa, to explore the issues of girl-education, from a simpler perspective, through the eyes of a 12- year- old.

A few weeks later in London, she gave her first policy speech on Prime Time TV, where she identified three basic areas, she believed if properly combined, the MDG issue of Universal Primary Education would be much closer to its objective.

They are: the Human Resources willing to teach, the technology we are willing to share, and the relevant software to power all these. Zuriel currently learns with a modification of the above three tools.

For the Human Resources willing to teach, she met in Washington DC with the Director of the United States Peace Corp, Mrs. Carrie Hessler-Radelet, because the Peace Corps since the 1960’s has sent volunteers across the globe to share teaching foundations – an army Zuriel hopes to tap for her education programmes.

Zuriel also met the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria – H.E. Carlos Sosa, because Cuba has, for decades, sent teachers to African countries, to help develop and strengthen the region’s education system.

Her next focus is technology companies, to explore partnerships with her DUSUSU (Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up) project as she moves that closer to developing her practical and simple educational model.

Ileke,
Thank you for expanding on this. When I saw Cocoa House I immediately thought of Western House on Broad street and Lapal House on Igbosere Road, both in Lagos and owned, in addition to many other properties in Lagos Central Business District, Apapa, Ikoyi, VI, Lekki, by WEMABOD, a subsidiary of OIC.

To those who may not know, WEMABOD and Lapal were the two wedges Awolowo used, successfully, to accelerate foreign investment, development and the subsidies to farmers and social programmes like health services, free education and so on. LAPAL stood for Lagos-Paris-And-London. Awo went around the Lagos Exchange and Azikiwe/Balewa Govt to source funding direct, he saw himself as the Prime Minister , not Premier, of Western Nigeria, The region commanded a far more diplomatic respect and was ranked higher than Nigeria in social and economic indices. Awolowo was running a parallel government. This was part reason the charge of treason was brought against him. He was locked up and then Zik began to dismantle the region in piecemeal. Western Cocoa Marketing Board, which became Western Marketing Board, now known as WEMABOD, suffered from a big policy change devised to remove subsidies and other farmer friendly policies installed by Awo. This confrontation between the politicians at the center and the Yoruba farmers erupted into what became "Operation Weti e" , and from which Agbekoya was formed. Agbekoya had only one intent...confront and fight Nigeria until Western Nigeria is given Sovereingty....however long it took. Part of theirstrategy is use Cocoa as a weapon and upset world market prices through supply chain, which was already in their grip in the marketing board.

Agbekoya were not dissuaded by both coups of 66, Western Nigeria remained a hot bed until it was suggested to Gowon that the only person with power to manage the dispute was Awolowo. He freed Awo to help calm West. WEMABOD was then tucked in under Oodua Investment Corp and they have never looked back since.

West ran a parallel government also during Jonathan's government and the policies at the center had no effect one way or the other in the Yoruba States. DAWN was launched to serve the cause that WEMABOD and OIC did when they were faced with similar challenge of dealing with an hostile center.

OIC must survive, and DAWN must survive, the Agbekoya goal must never be forgotten in our consciousness.

Oodua a Gbe wa O, Ase!

Fayose just de weak me everyday.
the state that fayemi was trying to turn into a developed & civilized state, more like Fayose is " pressing control z" on the legacies of fayemi. everyday is eating amala & climbing trees/trailers. mcheew.
the most annoying one is Osun state.
I still don't know what's holding that state down. (portraying itself like an average northern state).
Osun got what it takes to compete with the top 8 states. mineral resources, human and the environment is there.
the only drugs/ antidote for ekiti & osun state is to woo investors. they need industries/companies to curb unemployment and boost igr.
and they need to start exploring the resources in those states to boost there GDP. not waiting on FG allocation.
as for Oyo state, I don't know what's still obstructing the state not to generate at least 80-100b as revenue.

Ogun too can do better.[/quoteO
am from osun state and I must confess, osun is the biggest flop in south west. when I heard they are owing workers I couldn't just believe it. I see that most of our governors in S/w are just educated illirrates. I went to osun one day and I noticed the agricultural activity going on there. every road I passed had people selling oil or plantain. so I tot to myself, why can't the government make use of this.? osun is a large and fertile state. one of the best places u can get to grow probably one of the most important cash crop and industrial product which is oil palm.
why can't they just invest in that and use it to develop the state. is it DT the governors do not they can or dey just don't want to bother themselves....

2. How can we enforce the implementations of realistic ideas?

3. Goes back to #1, how can Nigerians in Nigeria use NL as a liaison between diasporas and Nigerians? If we know our voices are being heard, we're more likely to contribute.
don't you think we can form a strong political alliance from here to implement our ideas in the future. if we decide to wait for the bones in government now, the dreams and idea's might eventually die out. just saying

Sanmi,
Ileke's thought is a solid one. Your response is valid as well. Every so often we face challenges that awaken us to the limitations impeding our progress and then we share and contribute ideas...and the conclusion is always the same, let's form a movement to counter the opposing challenge.

If we didn't have this internet and forum how would we meet to deliberate on our issues? There are grassroot organizations that advance the cause already. They are looking for members and inputs and implementers. We should not waste time, effort and idea creating new organizatuons. The more organizatiins we create themore disorganized is our cause and focus. We need less and people need to join so our voice can congregate to one purpose for the single commonwealth.

If you have a list of such organisation, kindly make it available.

It is high time we start driving our leaders to achieve more than these mundane things we are celebrating.

Had Awolowo operated at this level, sincerely we will not be too far away with other regions. Hour was visionary, a good planner and perfect executioner.

Where are our mega agricultural settlements on a Local Government basis?

What stops DAWN or Odua Group from building just 1 world class hospital in a serene environment, kitted to the teeth with the latest technology, for us to drive medical tourism for the region?

What stops us from drawing an entrepreneurial/vocational skill scheme for our graduating and potentially jobless youths?

What stops the region from constructing a supersonic highway that will connect the 6states capital?

Why can't we designate the airport in Ibadan or any of the other proposed airports to be a maintenance airports for airlines in sub-saharan africa?

Why can't our government drive a massive, well planned city re-building process with housing projects that are affordable?

Why can't we have a state, most especially Osun, have a major tourist attraction to complement the Osun Festival, by having a world class amusement park, mall, zoo and water park -- all in one? What stops us from making the blacks in South America and even America to see our place as their own Jerusalem or Mecca or Medina they will always have to visit in their lifetime, for them to connect with their roots and have peace with their ancestors and all other nonsense that could be said to drive tourist traffic to us?

We need to ban okada in all our states. It is making youths to be lazy mentally. It gives daily income without acquiring any major skills, which is not the philosophy our forefathers handed down to us.

Let me stop here sha.

I forgot to add that!
Osun is suppose to be a wealthy state, but ironically.
that state is too blessed & green to it to be hungry.
even in aspect of tourism, the state isn't exploring that aspect.
imagine a state with gold as & other resources, still waiting on FG to spoonfeed them.
All the SW governors should start thinking outside the box, the culture of waiting for FG every 30 days is irritating.

But I don't see that ending soon, without regional autonomy

We are not moving forward, let's be blunt with ourselves, we are just stagnant (if not backward).

Thats not okay for them to do, but doesnt mean we blacklist them either. Jonathan government was a gold mine, the free flow of money killed conscience and character but we become great by presenting opportunity for cleansing.

Four years ago Ondo was the only Yoruba State that rejected ACN. We did not ostracize our brothers and sisters in Ondo because they stood away from rest.

OPC was slave to money and gave backing to Ibo....so now that the money source has dried, we need them to slave for patriotism and move Yoruba forward.

Highly impressive!

Yoruba leaders during the first republic were way ahead of their time. I think the primary reason why they excelled is cos they were proud of their Yoruba identity. I also believe cos most of them were educated in he west, during an era when racism was out of this world and black-pride/Afrocentricism was at its peak, with black folks everywhere wanting to show the world that the black man is just as intelligent as other races of people - they were able to come as a collective to build something great.

Furthermore, we all hear about Awolowo but I know he wouldn't have been able to achieve much without a solid team around him. I think older folks need to educate us about all the other folks who were part of that great team that built a renaissance in black Africa that would've turned the region into a first world country - if things had happened differently. These are our heroes and we all need to know about them. They gave a generation of Yorubas hope.

Also, a lot of Yoruba folks don't talk about the 19th and early 20th century Yorubas who created some sort of Yoruba renaissance in Lagos. Ladipo Solanke, Herbert Bankole-Bright, Julius Ojo-Cole, H. O. Davies, Oni Akerele, Adetokunbo Ademola, Kofo Abayomi, James Churchill Vaughan, Oguntola Sapara, Samuel Akinsanya, Kitoye Ajasa, Isaac Oluwole, Herbert Macaulay, John Otunba Payne et al. Not forgetting the Saros and Amaros.

Two layers of great Yoruba minds right there for you, Sir.
