yemaldo: But should we allow fifth columnists like their ancestor, Afonja, to join the Yoruba commonwealth cos of negligible resources? Their loyalty is with Northerners and Fulani emir. And these folks played a big role in the destruction of Oyo. I also believe there's a reason why Yorubas never bothered to reclaim Ilorin, after defeating the Fulanis at Oshogbo. So it might be safer to let them be. Personally, if I were to choose, I'd pick Itsekiri in lieu of Ilorin. At least Itsekiris have resources and they're more intertwined with riverine Yorubas and Edos (who're like cousins to Yorubas) than Ilorin, to be honest. It's not worth it. If we want Ilorin - we might as well go all the way to Oyo Katanga and claim the place - since Oyo started from there, before moving to Oyo Ile. That's just my opinion. |

mandarin: I do ot even know anything about the Ogori Magogos. Igalas have more link with the Igbos than the yorubas. Olukumis are descendants of Oduduwa. Likewise the ruling houe of Bini. I even read that the official language of the Oba of Benin within the courtyard is Yoruba, I do not know how true that is, but taking the eulogy of Oba of benin -- Iku Akpolokpolo -- it might be true. |

superstar1: Brev, did you see that thread in the culture section where Yorubas were representing their part of Yorubaland - and shockingly the overwhelming majority of folks there were Yorubas from Kogi? That's some funny thread and I like those Yorubas from Kogi - they adore their Yoruba roots despite not being part of the SW. 3 Likes |

IlekeHD: No, she was killed by the Ibadan warriors. She killed a slave girl for getting pregnant. She accused another slave of impregnating her, whereas it was her younger brother that is responsible and the younger brother actually lay claim to the pregnancy. All pleas fell on her deaf ears, She instructed the lady to be beheaded, but the slave by an dthe younger brother connived and made the lady to escape. She killed them all and still executed the lady. The King summoned her to the palace several times, she never showed up The King later gave the final order that she must be brought to the palace whether dead or alive. He dispatched the fiercest warriors to her house. She was eventually overpowered, but se committed suicide before they could effect the arrest. She was very close friend of Madam Tinubu, the iyalode of Egba, |

ProfShymex: Yea they do see themselves as Yorubas. They have full Yoruba names etc and the language is not really similar but i am not sure how i can explain it to you.Yoruba is generally spoken anyways. But if you only speak yoruba you wont understand it language. I am from the South East so that is mostly the part that migrated to the West, founded their own towns and mixed with other Akokos and can trace their ancestry back to old Benin. |

ProfShymex: I hardly visit other sections, apart from Politics. There are too many shallow brains and air-headed fellas in other sections. For ths category of yorubas, that have shown enthusiasm in aligning with their root, it is our duty to protect them. It is let to Ilorin people to do same and the Akoko Edos. The olukumi have always lay claim to their yoruba heritage. Likewise Itshekiris. Though we prefer to recognise the itshekiris as a different ethnicity because of the distance. |

WIZGUY69: Egbon, it should be Osun. We Ijeshas have countless Billionaires(hope I've not just bought a job for myself). And we also admire Ijebus and respect them for their success. Ijebu No 1. RESPECT. Too many Billionaires. Too much MONEY. |

Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by superstar1(m): 8:47pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
Funjosh: Really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am shocked. I thought there is always this story of Nri and Eri and the link with the Igbos. I have always felt they are Igbo's cousin, the same way Itshekiris and Binis are ours. |

superstar1: Bros, na God I take beg you, Igalas do NOT have links with the Igbo. Please do not believe all the stories you read on Nairaland, from those chaps across the Niger. superstar1: Cous-kini?? I beg, I reject that thought on behalf of the Igala, even though they have not sent me on this errand. Please do not believe all the hypothesis on Eri/Nri as the blood tie between Igbo and Igala. Thank you. 2 Likes |

Missy89: Hmmm. That is one thing I noticed whenever I speak general Yoruba, dey understand. But whenever they are communicating withing themselves I don't pick a single word from it. I think same with the Yoruba of Kogi and some Part of Akoko Edo also. |

Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by Nobody: 8:55pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
superstar1: Lmao @ shallow brains. Culture actually used to be the best section when I first joined NL. I think the decline started when they started making everything too Igbocentric...then once they made the Chief Igbo bigot, bigfrancis, a mod on there - everyone just left the section. But back in the day - it used to be live with a lot of knowledgeable folks, and even foreigners. Kogi Yorubas are supremely loyal from what I've seen. I believe the Akoko Edo are the Yoruba ones, while the Akoko in Ondo are the Edo ones, based on the little I know from posts in the culture section - I might be wrong though. Itsekiris are Yorubas. They have maintained their Yoruba clans and all those clans still exist in Ijebu waterside. Ugborodo, Omadino, Ureju, Irigbo, Inorin etc.. |

Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by IlekeHD: 8:56pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
How can we claim that a group is not Yoruba when Ekiti /Ondo is quite different from Oyo? And who made Oyo the language and the rest dialects? I see itsekiri as another Yoruba dialect. |

ProfShymex: I don't know where the Adenles are from. The Fagbenles should be either Ijeshas or Ekitis. I grew up in Ile-Ife, I can't even speak Ijesha very well despite the fact that my both parents are from Ilesha. They went to do Osomalo in Ile-Ife in 1974. We were all born and raised at Ife. I speak Ife dialect more than Ijesha. I hardly visit home. You are doing a good job Bro. Still, I follow. |
Re: Yoruba Commonwealth and Politics by superstar1(m): 9:02pm On Oct 26, 2015 |
IlekeHD: It came to be because Oyo was the administrative HQ for a long time. Ibadan was a military HQ while Ile Ife was the spiritual HQ. Oyo dialect ended up being the lingua franca because of the role Oyo was playig then. It was the FCT of that time. 3 Likes |
