Osimhen living up to his promise:

 Nigeria's Victor Osimhen arrived at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015 as a serious candidate for the adidas Golden Boot. Who, after all, could argue with his record of 39 goals in 71 appearances for the national team before the tournament started?

Those figures clearly spoke for themselves, and Osimhen has not disappointed since touching down on South American soil. At the end of the group stage, the 16-year-old forward sat joint top of the scoring table with Germany's Johannes Eggestein, both players having found the net four times. He has scored in all three games he has contested, with his standout performance against the hosts yielding two goals and an assist.

Beyond the figures, and his obvious composure in front of goal, Osimhen has also impressed with his ability to get his team-mates involved in play. "If people are really talking about me, that makes me proud," he told FIFA.com. "I always knew it would be hugely satisfying to get the chance to show what I can do in a tournament like this."

The Golden Eaglets' vice-captain is no stranger to taking the scoring prize in a major finals either. Back in March, he outstripped his rivals at the CAF African U-17 Championship. "That's true, but scoring goals in a World Cup is different," he explained. "Everything I've been through here has been an incredible experience."

Osimhen certainly does not seem to be withering under the weight of expectation, despite much being made of his talents before and since the big kick-off in Chile. "I feel no pressure at all," he said. "We've had the same staff in place for a while now and they've taught me to manage it, and also how to manage the support from the fans and any intimidation from opposition players. I'm ready for all of that."

Many of the finest forwards have been similarly adept at coping with pressure, and Osimhen's own idol comes as little surprise. "Didier Drogba is my role model," he said. "He represents the kind of player and person I'd like to be. I hope to develop the same ability to use the ball and score important goals. He's an icon, a legend. I'd love to be able to play like him – or even better."

Title ambitions
The youngster's confidence is eye-catching, but it also owes much to a broader sense of belief within the Nigeria squad. The 2013 winners travelled to Chile as potential champions once again, and they have lived up to that billing so far. "Our first objective was to play well, and we've done that. Our second is to lift the trophy. As holders, there's no point aiming any lower."

Question marks were nonetheless raised when Nigeria ended their Group A duties with a loss to Croatia, but Osimhen and his team-mates remain as ambitious as ever. "We weren't as focused as we'd been in our first two games and we paid the price," he explained, visibly unshaken by the loss. "We eased up a little because we'd already qualified, but that's no excuse. The team is doing well."

'Team' is a word that Osimhen comes back to time and time again, and he admits it is an important one in his outlook – and that of his colleagues. "Our previous U-17 squads, like the 2013 side, perhaps depended on individuals too much, but that's not the case with us. We don't depend on any one player: we play as a team, we win as a team and we lose as a team."

That team now face Australia in the Round of 16, and Osimhen already has a good idea of what to expect from the tie. "I'm hoping it'll be an open game, with our opponents launching attacks that will leave spaces for us." Either way, there is little doubt that he will be prepared. While most players spend their free time relaxing or enjoying themselves, Osimhen is set to be otherwise occupied in the lead-up to the game. "I stay in my room and think about what we have to do to win." The Joeys might want to consider doing likewise.

NIGERIA VS AUSTRALIA HEAD TO HEAD:

AUSTRALIA 0-1 NIGERIA (Canada 1987)

The first official meeting between Nigeria and Australia took place at the Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard, Montreal on July 19, 1987. The format then saw 16 teams from 6 confederations with the top two teams making it to the quarter final.

Having qualified as runners-up from Group D which had Soviet Union, Bolivia and Mexico, the Golden Eaglets set up a clash with Brian Hughes’ boys who silenced France, Brazil and Saudi Arabia to top Group C.

However, it was substitute Christopher Nwosu whose 59th minute strike sent Sebastian Brodericks’ lads to the last four. Unfortunately, Eaglets failed to defend their trophy as they bowed 4-2 on penalties to the Soviet Union after regulation time ended 1-1 with Phillip Osondu leveling up Yuri Nikiforov’s opener.

NIGERIA 2-0 AUSTRALIA (Japan 1993)

After ripping apart Canada and Argentina 8-0 and 4-0 respectively in their first two games of the fifth edition of the Fifa U17 World Cup at the Mizuho Rugby Stadium, Nagoya. Nigeria took on Australia in their third Group A game at the Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium, Gifu City.

Second half strikes from Kanu Nwankwo and Wilson Oruma handed Fanny Amun’s side a 2-0 victory which gave them a perfect start to the competition while Leslie Paul Scheinflug’s boys settled for the runners up spot.

The Golden Eaglets continued their fine form by breezing past Japan, Poland and Ghana to lift their second title on September 4, 1993 at the Tokyo National Stadium, Tokyo.

NIGERIA 2-0 AUSTRALIA (Ecuador 1995)

1995 saw the two sides meet again, this time in Ecuador, as Nigeria bowed to Oman in the quarter final despite taking the lead through Chiedu Chukwueke.

Led by Sebastian Brodericks again, they silenced Australia in their second group game at the Estadio Olímpico de Riobamba, Riobamba. Edward Anyamkygh gave Nigeria the lead in the 59th minute before James Obiorah’s strike in the closing seconds of the game tamed Leslie Paul Scheinflug’s boys.

AUSTRALIA 1-5 NIGERIA ( T&T 2001)

Nigeria and Australia met in the quarter-finals of the 2001 edition in Trinidad and Tobago, when three goals from Femi Opabunmi gave the Eaglets a 5-1 win with Suleiman Mohammed and Temile Omonigho getting on the scorers’ sheet. While Mathew Engele got the consolatory strike for Ange Postecoglou’s team at Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

The Golden Eaglets saw off Burkina Faso 1-0 in the semi-final before losing their steam against France in the final as they bowed 3-0 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Port of Spain.

NIGERIA 2-1 AUSTRALIA ( Finland 2003)

The last Fifa U17 World clash between the two nations arrived in the group stage of the tournament staged in Finland. After a 1-1 draw against Costa Rica in their opening game, Nigeria beat Australia 2-1 at the Veritas Stadion, Turku.

With the Eaglets dominating possession, John Obi Mikel and Ezekiel Bala’s second half strikes helped Augustine Eguavoen’s boys overcome the stubborn Joeys who had raced into the lead in the second minute courtesy Dez Giraldi. Unfortunately, Nigeria failed to seal a quarter final ticket after losing to Costa Rica via a toss of the coin.

This year will be the sixth game between Nigeria U17 and Australia U17, both will be at full strength and there are still scores to settle. This highly-anticipated clash is expected to be touchy

Seriously, I Don't Know The Problem Of These so-called NL MODS.
English Capital One Match Features Have Been Moved To Front Page,And They Are Yet To Move Our Own Important Match To Front Page.

The Last Time We Played,It Wasn't Moved Also, Not Until Members Started Calling And Shouting On Them.I Think They Are Trying To Repeat That Today Too,They Made Hundreds To Miss That Match.

I Solely Admonish You To Move This Thread To Front Page,People Still Need To Be Sensitized To Avoid Missing Tonight's Game Too.

GOD BLESS NL.
GOD BLESS NIGERIA..
GOD BLESS THE EAGLETS...
