ABUJA — Senators belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and their All Progressives Congress, APC, were, yesterday, preparing for a showdown over different positions on the confirmation of two of 16 remaining ministerial nominees.

It was, however, learnt that Senate President Bukola Saraki was determined to weigh in on behalf of the former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi and the ministerial nominee from Cross River State, Usani Uguru. The duo had been caught up in a grudge war mounted by PDP senators.Amaechi-saraki

Amaechi is held in contempt by the PDP Senate caucus for his role in the defeat of the former ruling party in the last round of elections. Uguru brought himself into the bad book of the PDP Senate caucus when, during his screening, he said “God forbid” to a question as to his membership of the PDP.

Following the end of the screening of the nominees yesterday, the PDP Senate caucus held a meeting where they reportedly took a position against the confirmation of Amaechi. The senators were said to have resolved not to consider Amaechi’s nomination unless the report of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges on the petitions filed against the former Rivers State governor was brought forward for consideration first.

Last five nominees screened

Five nominees were screened, yesterday, bringing to an end, the exercise that commenced about three weeks ago.

The five nominees screened were former Vice-Chancellor of Imo State University, Professor Anthony Anwuka (Imo); financial expert and medical doctor, Okechukwu Enelamah (Abia); newspaper columnist, Adamu Adamu (Bauchi); former Executive Secretary of National Hajj Commission, Mohammed Musa Bello (Adamawa), and Aisha Abubakar (Sokoto).

However, the confirmation exercise which was expected to commence

The PDP caucus are just set of confused lawmakers who lack leadership role to operate in the house as an opposition. Aren't they ashamed of themselves.......... Mind you not hear to support Amaechi but the fact remains that the PDP senators need to re-strategies themselves and play their as opposition.

whatever you do in life, reach out for good name cos it's better than gold and make sure your hands are clean; always come to equity with clean hands. By so doing, you'd be able to hold your head high.
Saraki is now torn between respecting the pdp he used against his own party and impressing his party with majority, not to 'exacerbate his travail at the tribunal.
Saraki bobo is discobombulated right now.
Be loyal!

Seriously I don't see them playing the role of opposition in the red chamber, all they keep doing is follow-up and misguide attitude. SMH 4 PDP

This is not empty threat. They can stage a showdown in the Senate if they are not properly and carefully lobbied.

We have heard enough of this vain grandstanding and futile legislative histrionics from the opposition PDP senators, i think it is high time to draw the line & place them where they belong as the minority in the chamber.

Saraki sold out his soul to them upon his ascension to the seat of Senate Presidency, but nonetheless, Ameachi's confirmation is beyond their vain hope on Saraki.
The sure bet is to call for division and voice votes or otherwise will be ascertain, then the minority will know their statue.
From the proceedings so far, the APC senators bloc support are with Ameachi so Ameachi's confirmation is a 'BANKER'.

Very very shameful the corruption mantra from Buhari was just propaganda and APC loyalist are useless people. A Governor that stole billions through white elephant projects is being hailed as a lion. FYI male lions eat their young and practice homosexual behavior so am not surprised.
PDP is full of cow dung too, so Aisha was just waved through without a question?

Hmmmm.

Contrary to ApC's claim, they are the ones to be told, 'it has ceased to be business as usual'!

PDP senators as ably led by Senator Godswill Akpabio are the ones that make the 8th Senate lively and interesting.
PDP senators are focused and no-nonsense senators.
They are ready and able at all times to teach APC the ropes of leaadership.
Amaechi and Usani Uguru are in soup. It is not too late, they better swing into action and start lobbying the opposition through their caucus.
Even in the western world Legislature, lobbying is done.
This is the beauty of democracy, especially a multi/two party democracy. Not (God forbid) this one party zoo APC is trying to turn Nigeria into. I wonder whose dictatorial and totalitarian ambition the single party agenda means to further.

"Whether i shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show" - Charles Dicken

Whether Ameachi shall turn out to be the hero of the day, or there shall be thearitics from the opposition PDP senators, all i know is that at the end of the day the pages must show that Rt Hon Rotimi Chubuike Ameachi was confirmed as a minister-designate of the federal Republic of Nigeria.

It is the not only an empty threat, it is one that has made them a laughing stock cheesy.

It's obvious they are still smarting from the fact that Amaechi's involvement put a major dent in the fortunes of PDP, so no one taked them serious, THEY ARE CLOWNS...

The only showdown they can is to leave Saraki to bear his cross alone, they do not need to be lobbied, they are in the MINORITY, they are only entitled to their SAY, the MAJORITY has the right of WAY..

The deal is between Saraki & PDP, they will sort themselves out, they are one & same.

It is high time the likes of Akpabio begin to realise that being in the opposition is not about making Nigerians to laugh. It is time they test whether Saraki will give them back, the support they have been lavishing on him. If not, they should get rid of him, withdraw Ekweremadu as DSP and start the onerous role/task of opposition of party. Ekweremadu's stay as DSP, to me, is the height of lust for power and desperation on the part of the PDP.

Their greed for power and complacency in the face of it, had been their undoing.

APC did not get into government by clowning.

Three things I see here:

1. A bunch of people that never learn: Amaechi is like a submarine at high speed- his course cannot be altered by a pack of angry sharks, neither can it be stopped by a blue whale. Amaechi's destiny as a Minister of the Republic is already signed, sealed and delivered.

2. A bunch of petty losers: It is obvious PDP has but one objective in mind (even though they claim otherwise), feathering their own Nest of Killers and pursuit of interests that are at variance with that of Nigerians.

To them it doesn't matter whatsoever the competence of a man, as far as such a man's actions contributed to their loss in the presidential election, such a man cannot be given the task to rebuild this wreckage they handed to Baba. Their misplaced "vindictiveness" astonishing to say the least.

3. Bunch of confused men: If they really wanted to have Amaechi stopped what better time to start doing so than when he appeared on the floor for screening?? Rather, they kept mum like a bunch of deaf and dumb meekly puppies saying it was a "tactical move". I've never seen where "not stopping a man from achieving something STOPPED him from achieving same!" grin. And now, they are running all over the place like lost children looking to board a ship that has already sailed.

Funny people.

The power lies with the Senators actually. If the senate president hits the gravel, any senator can raise a point of order and call for a vote count. This will see the senators vote and the side with the highest votes win

Why embarking on a futile face saving gimmick that is well too little too late, Amaechi is a minister desginate and nothing can stop him from being a minister of the Federal Republic now, they only time he was stoppable was before appearing before the Senate. so threatening Saraki now to me is an empty threat.

The gavel is a "stamp", nothing happens after it's struck until the next legislative day. During the time of Tambuwal as Speaker, it's the House had adjourned and the the gavel used that he announced his defection to APC. At that moment, PDP members would've called for his resignation but wouldn't because the gavel had been struck and the House adjourned to the next two months or so.
