Awka — The policy of Anambra State Government to supply laptop computers to primary school teachers at exorbitant prices is causing ripples among stakeholders of education in Anambra State.

Already, the primary school teachers are complaining that the state government has concluded plans to force them to buy a laptop computer each at the cost of N90,000.00.

The teachers have no option of buying it elsewhere except from the state government. To make the matter worse, the teachers have also been forced to sign consent forms to have the cost of the laptops deducted from their salary at the rate of N5,000. 00 every month.

Also, the Anambra State government is forcing every primary school to buy a white board to be supplied by the government for each arm of the classes.

Like in the case of laptops, while a white board costs between N7,000 and N8,000 in the market, the state government is forcing schools to buy each white board at N18,000.00.



This is in addition to discriminatory payment of bush allowance to primary school teachers posted to rural areas.

While some teachers from the areas where officials of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) come from have been paid their allowances which was introduced to encourage teachers to take their posting to rural areas, those teachers who have nobody to speak for them were let out.

When they complained to the officials, they were asked to fill forms and face other bureaucracies.

However, traditional rulers, town union Presidents-General, stakeholders in education who attended a the quarterly meeting of Justice, Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC) of Catholic Diocese of Onitsha held in Ogidi yesterday condemned government policies in education and urged Governor Willie Obiano to reverse them as such policies are anti-people and anti-teachers.

In a communique issued after the meeting, the stakeholders observed that laptops are teaching instruments and are supposed to be provided to the teachers or at worse to schools by the government free of charge.

They recalled that in the previous dispensation, computers and generating sets were provided for schools free of charge and computer laboratories were also built for schools while instructors were trained to teach them.

The meeting lamented that even where the teachers have laptops already, they were told that "even if they had two laptops before now, they must buy the one being provided by the government".

Among other things, the forum urged government to have a second look at its policy on computer to teachers and in fact provide them free to teachers. But before providing teachers with the laptops, teachers should be trained first, they said.

ibeto is building cement plant in nkalagu(not Enugu) instead of anambra because there is no limestone deposit in anambra

One hotel was opened in Mkpikpa Obosi some days ago!.News coverage of Onitsha/Anambra State is still very poor, but with time will surely improve!. Very soon, Obiano will turn the state arround!. There are a lot of projects coming up very soon!.You are not saying the whole truth my brother!.
