Nwadike Gloria Kelechi, 23-years-old, is the current Miss Planet Nigeria 2015/2016. A graduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, she studied sociology and anthropology. She is from Ihembosi in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. Gladys Ndukwe had an interaction with her.

Tell us about your background?

I grew up in Lagos State, I am from a family of eight, six girls and two boys. I am the 7th child, my parents are God fearing and disciplinarians. They were very supportive in my modelling career and have been helpful all the way, this really helped in shaping me to become the humble and caring woman that I am today.

What inspired you to contest for Miss Planet Nigeria?

I have always dreamt of becoming a beauty queen because it would be a good platform for me to carry out my pet project which is, helping the children on the street.

What were your challenges while you were in camp?

The challenges were not just during the camping, even during the auditions. It was very competitive, the selling of tickets, doing a lot of rehearsals that you have never done before and also staying with other people you never knew before, you just have to cope with the situation and also be at peace with everyone.



What made you stand out among others at the competition?

My noble sincerity; my intelligence; beauty, charisma and humble state of mind which I used to carry everyone along.

Who is your role model?

My role models: are Mrs Elizabeth Nwadike; Ellen Johnson; Sir Leaf and Yvonne Nelson; and my ideal man is a God-fearing man who will love to pet me because I love to be pampered a lot.

Were you in anyway molested sexually or did you encounter such an experience from the organisers during the contest?

Capital NO, not at all! My CEO is only interested in bringing out the best in us as well as making us independent and ambitious women. There was no such thing. The CEO, John Tagger, is a very nice person. He advised us not to give out our numbers or collect that of any man that just came around us. He also advised us as women that we should be independent and we shouldn't rely on people. There was nothing like that at all.

As a beauty queen, what project do you have for Nigerian youths?

My pet project is human capacity development and I will be focusing on the girl child, teenagers' and the youth. My main objective is to help them discover their unique talents, like fashion designing, bead-making, sports career, dancing, acting and also becoming a makeup artist etc., so that they can develop all these careers and use them to earn a living. It can also keep them busy and make them to become employers of others, thereby reducing the rate of unemployment in our society, negative vices like prostitution, low self-esteem and lack of purpose or focus in life. I would also like to invite some organisations to help in carrying out this project which I have in mind.

How do you feel as a queen?

I feel great; awesome honestly I can't express all that I feel. It's an interesting thing I must say.

When you keep trying hard to achieve a thing and it's not forth coming, once it finally arrives it gives great joy. I have tried severally to become a model for years. The first time, I was the 3rd runner, same goes to the second attempt. I have tried twice, this is my third time of trying.



When you were announced as the winner what happened to you at that moment?

I was like, is this really happening? I was so surprised and very happy, I felt like dancing, singing aloud, but suddenly I saw tears rolling down my eyes when my fellow contestants came in to hug me and acknowledge me as the winner. Those words were touching. It was just a dream come true.

What were your parents' reactions when they heard you had won?

They were happy, especially my mum, she was so excited. There were jubilations among my sisters and brothers, my mum felt like crying because she was aware of my efforts in the beauty pageant and my dad congratulated me as well, and reminded me of his words of encouragement.

What advice do you have for young girls that would want to become beauty queens?

I would advise them to be focussed and not allow anybody to intimidate them on their dreams. They should carry God first in all that they do because without His directions, they will lose focus. If I can make it, I believe they can, the sky is their starting point.

Community provides land for abattoir


An abattoir sitting on eight hectares of land is in the offing in Awka, the Anambra State capital but the government and residents have the Umuike village to thank for donating it. The community is in Awka South Local Government Area of the state.

The abattoir project contractor Mr. Dozie Abajue of Hyperfarms Construction firm said it will be ready next year.

The state governor, Chief Willie Obiano has announced that the abattoir, said to be one of its kind in these parts, will cost the contracting firm and the state government $11.4 million (about N2.576 billion).

The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Afam Mbanefo told The Nation that Hyperfarms will be ably supported by a Dutch company known as MAREL, one of the best in livestock processing and packaging, according to him.

Also, he said that Hyperfarms has the capacity to slaughter and process 400 cattle per day and could easily handle 1000 cattle per day, when fully operational.



The traditional ruler of Awka community, Obi Gibson Nwosu commended Governor Willie Obiano for his efforts in making Anambra look like any other capital city.

The monarch further hailed the people of Umuike village in his kingdom for bringing out the land for the abattoir project, which according to him, would create job opportunities in the community.

Speaking with The Nation in Awka, the chairman of Umuike land management committee, Chief Dilim Okafor, lauded governor Obiano for his initiative of bringing such project to Awka.

Again, he said that the governor followed Anambra State’s land policy by inviting and negotiating with landowners before embarking on the project.

He said the abattoir, when completed would give the community a new face compared to what people operate in the area as slaughter houses.

Okafor, one of the elder statesmen in Umuike village in Awka, commended Obiano’s administration on behalf of the village for some of the projects the government was doing in the area.

Furthermore, he urged the state government to initiate other projects in the community, which according to him had been yearning for developmental projects in the part.

According to the septuagenarian, “this community is equally due to have a five star hotel in it, we also need other projects to be like other capital cities in the world and we believe Obiano has the capacity to do it.”

“Anytime the state government is ready for any of these developmental projects, we are ready to provide enough lands for them because we have enough” Okafor said.

While speaking with The Nation after the foundation laying event, Obiano said the commencement of construction work on the ultra modern abattoir was the most critical step following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in June.

Obiano expressed a strong reservation with the current state of abattoirs in the state.

According to the Governor, “what we have as abattoirs in Anambra State is not a standard we should adopt. The hygiene surrounding the places where animals are slaughtered and processed is still very poor.

“So, we are going to address that with this kind of abattoir. Secondly, we are going to build the same thing for other senatorial zones. We will build one in Oyi Local Government and another one in Orumba.

“These will address the challenge in these critical areas. it is only when we have done this that we can start enforcing the minimum standards of hygiene conditions surrounding meat processing, packaging and sale”

Throwing some light on the equity structure of the investment, Governor Obiano explained that the abattoir is a partnership between Anambra State government and Hyperfarms Limited which owns 90 percent of the equity while the state government owns 10 percent. The host local government retains 2.5 percent.”

The governor also revealed that on completion, Hyperfarms Limited would create 250 direct jobs and 1500 indirect jobs.

He further assured that the abattoir would be ready for commissioning after one year of commencement of construction.

My question for Anambra State government is why should Onitsha such a well planned city and environs be too difficult and hard for you guys to manage?
Traffic hold up is the major reason why Lagos is like nightmare to me but am scared that such is repeating itself here, the xmas season here is in its zenith yet our government only sew beautiful uniforms to youngmen and women to control traffic where there are none but nobody to direct vehicular movement where the traffics are heavy.

Inconclusion, though i know it has never happened before but i must confess that the realities in Anamabra transport and environment sector are devastating, so i suggest Obiano should resign or sack the two docile, clueless, irresponsible, insensitive and visionless officials if his government shouldnt be held responsible if any misfortune befall Ndi Anambra because of their poor perfomances.
H.E. your entire cabinet may not have been failures but these two are and have brought badname to your government, beyond these two bad sector i know how Anambra is faring in other sectors.
