On paper our moderators say that plagiarism is not allowed. But I keep seeing posts of plagiarized materials making FP- an act that says Nairaland Admin is in support despite the disclaimers.

According to the Moderator in Literature section, posting another person's write up (paraphrased. The Mod even said something like "closely related thoughts"wink without permission is plagiarism. Even if the source is recognized it is still plagiarism. Just like stealing and eating someone's food and then telling everyone that joins in eating that you didn't cook it. Does that make up for not allowing the owner to decide whether or not to give you the food?

I agree. Why? Imagine you started an online news magazine and did serious ground work to uncover important but secret events in Nigeria hoping that your stress will pay in the end because you are providing something not easily available. You were hoping to make money from adverts on the website by pooling viewers.

However, your first viewers are Nairaland's FP deprived people (very many) who have been converted to "Ago make front page by all means". You know what happens next. They will quote your work verbatim on Nairaland, put the source and maybe just 2% of those who see the source will bother to check it. Your hope of making money by investing in originality can be dashed.

Except we have secured an agreement with the source or it is the same source, Mods should please protect Nairaland lest someone gets frustrated and fight back.

The advent of social media had either added to or subtracted from the meaning of plagiarism.

Some of these laws need to be repealed to reflect contemporary developments in the society.

Well, whatever change comes must protect the purpose of people who do the real work.

However, I agree with you that we need laws to reflect the advent and influence of social media.
